@futurebird I've been meaning to ask (and this is a sincere question) what is your stance on anteaters?

@futurebird I would not want a copy of that print, but I would be happy to learn of its eventual existence.

I have a cousin who might be interested. Her art style is a bit out there.

Writing a program to teach programming is NOTHING like writing a program. Here is a binary conversion program 5th graders can understand. First I tell them we are making a program that will check the ages of people in a family. You must be over 10 to ride the roller coaster.

ages = [45, 50, 4, 13, 62, 21, 7]

for a in ages:
if a>=10:
print(a, "is old enough!")
else:
print(a, "is", 10-a, "years too young to ride!")

Clunky right? Well here comes the binary:

1/2

kboyd ,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@futurebird runs it in my head oh hey that's nice and simple. Conceptually similar to the approach I use for displaying "friendly" byte sizes.

kboyd ,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@futurebird @detritus @ramsey Yeah, really. In my experience the best teachers I've had have all had a knack for framing the subject in either a humorous or engrossingly interesting way.

Anyone using / for photo management? Like Adobe Lightroom, minus the editing features?

I like the idea of managing my RAW photos as normal files, and presumably building an Obsidian plugin to handle RAW preview and the (intentionally very limited) kinds of edits I'd want. But not obvious to me whether Obsidian is a reasonable foundation for that purpose.

kboyd ,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@donmccurdy The thought hadn't even crossed my mind.

And now that it has, I can't help but grimace at the idea of processing raw files in JS inside an electron app.

Perhaps this is because my primary Obsidian use case is synchronizing notes between my laptop and iphone, and that wouldn't work very well with my 2TB+ of RAWs.

sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing Sailing question: On a Catalina 27, if you had a choice between a loose-footed main and a boltrope main (where it is attached for the full length of the boom), which would you prefer?

And how much work would it be to convert a boltrope boom to a loose-footed boom? (my assumption is virtually no work required, but I could be wrong)

kboyd OP ,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@linuxguy My co-op bought an "identical" boat to the one we previously had, so we have parts for both types. The new boat has boltrope sails, but the old boat was loose-footed & the old boat's sails are slightly better condition. Trying to decide which set to sell vs which to keep.

Why does "Simon" have so many YouTube channels

@mcc Assuming I'm thinking of the same Simon, and I am, it's because he's been an AI text to speech virtual personality this whole time.

    @JessTheUnstill It sounds like this conflates self-hosting with home-hosting, unless I'm misreading it. So, from my view, you can self-host in a data centre (either via colocation or VPSes).

    Everything else is spot-on, though. Normal people shouldn't have to self-host. But, also in my view, normal users should always have the option to self-host/home-host. Anything less is a recipe for capitalist abuse and lock-in.

    Spending my evening trying to identify a seemingly obscure piece of boom shackle tackle.

    Or, more specifically, a boom vang that seems to have a harness that goes around the boom, instead of a bracket that attaches to the boom.

    Can't seem to find the right words to describe it ... but the existing one is fraying & could fail.

    sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing

    ALT
    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar

    @ghost_towels Thanks, good tip. I've got a sailmaker contact that can probably help.

    Any idea what I can call it? My searches haven't turned up anything ready-made online. The webbing/straps go up to a metal plate (bridle? saddle? shoe? cuff?) on the top side of the boom, through strap slots, in order to apply evenly-distributed downward force. It looks like it should be some kind of kit, but no dice with DuckDuckGo and google.

    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar

    Okay, I've got some more photos of the boom vang attachment. Looks like the foot of the sail is fitted into a track on the boom, and the vang strap goes through special slotted clips on each side of the sail track in order to connect. Weird! What is this setup called? Can someone in safely replace the strap for me until we can attach a proper vang mount point? sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing

    The same style of clip on the opposite side of the boom.
    A view from below, looking up, showing how the blue strap feeds underneath the boom between the two clips.
    A second view of the "healthy" side, showing that this is the only side sufficiently attached to the vang. Not safe; other side should also be attached.

    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar

    @Amgine sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing the thing is, I think the strap is supposed to be a contained loop. I don't think there's supposed to be a dangling piece; as far as I can tell from looking at it, it was sewn into place in the current form, and then the strap snapped off at a later point in time. Maybe I'm wrong? But the dangling bit doesn't feel right.

    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar

    @Amgine sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing It seems they do, yes. In hindsight I should have tried to see if they were easy to unclip. (That would be my expectation, and would simplify repairs if so.)

    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar

    @Amgine sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing uh oh. That would be "cut the strap and screw a proper bail or weld an attachment point in its place" territory, IMHO.

    kboyd OP ,
    @kboyd@phpc.social avatar
