@futurebird I've been meaning to ask (and this is a sincere question) what is your stance on anteaters?

From now on, anytime someone asks me why I put so much time and effort into this arguably dumb account, I will simply tell them that I do it for Tim.

Trying to build Chrome for Android might be one of the most hateful software engineering experiences of my life. And I used to build GAUSSIAN03 from source.

@tojiro @directhex dare I ask the both of you, what about Cobalt? I have never EVER been able to build Cobalt.

Any USB-C / Smart Charger / PD experts out there?

Trying to find out how much more $$ it would have cost Staresso to put a smart PD style charger receiver inside their new Discovery II USB-C charging cordless coffee grinder. It appears to have a pretty basic 5V /1A charger, and it does not work with a 35W USB-C charging brick I have, but does work with a Qualcomm Q 18W charger I have.

Does it need a smarter battery too to make rapid charging / PD chargers work?

@coffeegeek Sorry, your USB C coffee grinder doesn't work when plugged into a USB PD power brick?

@coffeegeek Yeah, QC is a completely different specification that communicates in a totally different way. However even if you plug a non QC item into a QC port you still get 5v at multiple amps with no negotiation. As for as for USB PD however if you screw up your USB C implementation sufficiently (like literally putting resistors in the wrong spot) sufficiently smart chargers and cables will think your device is a passive audio adapter and give it no power. See: https://www.scorpia.co.uk/2019/06/28/pi4-not-working-with-some-chargers-or-why-you-need-two-cc-resistors/

dear lazy web: I am looking to buy a laptop. I'd like something smol, sturdy, decent keyboard, doesn't look like an apple product, has a strong CPU, a bunch of ram (ideally replaceable), and an ok GPU (Intel is fine). I'd like to be able to run Linux on it. Some nice-to-haves are a touch screen, the ability to fold the screen around and use it like a tablet, and being relatively easy to repair.

What's good these days?

EDIT: I just put in an order for a Framework 13

@aeva My inital knee jerk response/serious answer (If you wanna buy new) is probably some kind of System 76 box. The frameworks seem nice but I'm kinda leery of them due to their reluctance to release schematics. My non-serious answer would be the MNT Reform, which is a completely open source laptop that relies on some sort of ARM based SOM for it's CPU. It's quite expensive for the performance you get, but theoretically workable as an ssh box and of course the pinnacle of reparability.

@aeva
The build quality stuff is discouraging to hear. ☹️ If I was to buy a new laptop my hope was always to get a system 76, largely to support their cause/software development. At the moment I daily drive a used thinkpad (shocking, I know.) I actually put a new battery in it a couple months ago. I really want to like framework, but their video series about the dev of their sd card module that seemed to completely ignore/downplay the OSHW community put a pretty bad taste in my mouth.
