Having an oil industry makes you a target of United States imperialism.

Ditching fossil fuels is a national security and sovereignty imperative.

sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing Sailing question: On a Catalina 27, if you had a choice between a loose-footed main and a boltrope main (where it is attached for the full length of the boom), which would you prefer?

And how much work would it be to convert a boltrope boom to a loose-footed boom? (my assumption is virtually no work required, but I could be wrong)

@linuxguy My co-op bought an "identical" boat to the one we previously had, so we have parts for both types. The new boat has boltrope sails, but the old boat was loose-footed & the old boat's sails are slightly better condition. Trying to decide which set to sell vs which to keep.

linuxguy ,

Lol, not a bad position to be in. Maybe go with the better sails, everything else equal... Good luck!

What would it actually look like to live in a world where working for income was decoupled from surviving/thriving?

Hey boaters of mastodon/fediverse: What do you recommend as a removable mounting solution for a large raymarine navionics screen?

Previously we've been using a terrible, no-good, endlessly frustrating mounting ball "solution". But we have an opportunity to find something better.

Don’t know if they have exactly what you’re looking for but we picked up a Scanstrut system to hold our iPad and their stuff is pretty solidly built.

Spending my evening trying to identify a seemingly obscure piece of boom shackle tackle.

Or, more specifically, a boom vang that seems to have a harness that goes around the boom, instead of a bracket that attaches to the boom.

Can't seem to find the right words to describe it ... but the existing one is fraying & could fail.

@cbleslie sailing@lemmy.world icon Sailing I hope someone is able to tell me some keywords I can search for to find out what this setup is even called. Search results so far are coming up empty.

If you're sailing in fog and want other ships to be able to steer clear of you, what would be the best song to blast at full volume?

What would be the OS though?

@mattyroses well, to be clear, I made this post before the Dhh stuff. But it would likely have been FreeBSD or Ubuntu.

(As in, I would have installed my own OS)

I'm just so exhausted with everything getting worse all the time. (Companies sabotaging their own products, mainly, because they serve the investors & not the users.)

Tell me about some stuff that is improving in a way that actually helps people.

@kboyd Even in tech, between Plasma, Gamescope, Wayland and Wine advancements, things are looking super cool for gaming and media on Linux. Basically the last "missing feature" on the Linux side is HDR support and that's actually happening (for real this time, I promise, lol)

Even less reasons to look back at the decision to completely ditch proprietary OSes, the count is firmly in the negative now
