Hello fediverse!

I'm feeling a bit guilty for not posting more recently. It's because I've been insanely heads down on product work.

It's thoroughly humbling how the last 5% of a product consumes 95% of the development time. So many edge cases to accommodate. So many performance improvements to make. So many devices and screen sizes to optimize for. Across web browsers, operating systems, email clients, protocols, phones, tablets, laptops, desktops. Plus GDPR and CCPA. OMG.

Mad respect for any software developer who is able to ship anything worthwhile these days.

@sterlingsmith I have had the M10-D for years and absolutely love it. I think it makes me a better photographer every time I use it precisely because there is no EV. So no, I wouldn't swap my M10-D for the EV-1.

@HRGL89 Back when I was in high school I wrote a game called Night Mission which was published by Millers Graphics along with a book written by Craig Miller about how to write video games.

I was inspired by many of the games you've featured here. It was a magical time.

@Eliot_L @firesidefedi Good question! I think redesigns keep happening for at least a few reasons:

  1. It's hard to get a design that people love the first (or second or third time) so redesigns are often justified by poor user metrics in the name of growth.

  2. Product and design teams come and go through the life of a product and everyone wants to naturally put their mark on a product, even if it's doing well. This is the worst reason for a redesign.

  3. Even when it's clear a product really does need to dramatically evolve after many years, the option of building an entirely new app that sits alongside the current one is a huge decision with many tradeoffs including managing multiple code bases, confusing the user base, brand, and marketing message, etc. As a result many teams opt to change the current product instead. Of course this winds up having it's own set of issues like having to provide backward compatibility which massively slows down eng and design, introducing complexity into an otherwise well honed experience, etc.

The net of it is that there are no easy options for evolving tech products over many years. But if you're lucky enough to have built something that people love, I believe the very worst option is to pull the rug out from under those people. Far better to bite off building a new product in parallel IMO.

I've seen One Battle After Another twice now, and I can't remember the last time a film reinvigorated my love of the movies so intensely. I can't get to the theater as easily as before, as I have numerous small children, and that's eroded my cinematic meditations. I'm rekindled by PT Anderson!

They were filming a movie today in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California! Or it could be a car commercial? I wonder how many movies have been filmed out there? Probably 500-600, I'd bet.

Our last sunrise in Tasmania was something special. At first, the sky was cloudless, but just as I began to growl, a dark cloud cover quickly rolled in. It started to rain, but a small part of the sky remained clear where the sun was rising.

I have been reading about.flipboard.com and I don't understand what is actually supposed to be.

They don't seem to actually onboard new publishers? RSS feeds only work in mobile and not on their website? I swear magazines used to have an RSS option in settings that now is nowhere to be seen?

I just found out they have a new web browser, except maybe it's an app and not a browser at all?

@jonah We've stopped accepting new publishers through our website because we were starting to see a ton of link bait sites applying. We now do this manually for sites that we can see are really good. Are you trying to get into the program?

@sturmsucht I really appreciate hearing your perspective as well as from others on this thread. This is a great example of how social media can be useful. Sometimes things can seem so simple when in fact they're not. I think people are making a good point in this thread that the people of Hungary could be on the threshold of voting in a new leader and expulsion from the EU could harm that.
