From fakebook.

The greatest guitar riff of the decade didn’t begin on a stage. It began in a half empty pub no one remembers.

It was a rainy night in 1977 when Mark Knopfler wandered into a nearly deserted bar in Deptford. He was broke. He was tired. He only wanted a drink to warm the evening.

In the corner, a small Dixieland jazz band played to almost no one. Older men. Older instruments. Jackets worn thin. The kind of performance you give when the world has forgotten you but your love for music refuses to quit.

Three or four people stood around. A couple of boys hit pool balls in the back. No clapping. No audience. No spotlight.

But Knopfler listened.

He called out songs. Creole Love Call. Muskrat Ramble. The band stared at him in disbelief. Someone in the room actually knew the music they carried like memory.

For two hours they played like the pub was packed. All soul. No applause.

And at the end, the bandleader stepped to the mic and said the line that would rewrite rock history.

Goodnight and thank you.
We are the Sultans of Swing.

Knopfler almost laughed. Nothing about that bar or that moment felt like royalty. That is why the name hit him like lightning.

He returned to the cold council flat he shared with his brother David and bassist John Illsley. The gas meter kept running out. The band’s name Dire Straits was not a metaphor. It was their life.

Knopfler picked up his National Steel guitar and began shaping a story. Harry with his day job. Guitar George who knew all the chords. Men playing not for fame but for the love of sound itself.

The song was good. But it didn’t breathe yet.

Then came the turning point. He scraped together enough money to buy a used 1961 Fender Stratocaster. The first moment he plugged it in the entire song unlocked. The groove. The precision. The riff that would carry them out of obscurity.

They recorded a demo. BBC Radio rejected it as too long and too wordy.

But a Dutch DJ played it. Then a German station. Then American radio set it on fire.

Sultans of Swing climbed to number four in the United States. And the BBC that first dismissed it finally played the track only because America had already crowned it a hit. A perfect poetic reversal.

Dire Straits went on to sell more than one hundred twenty million records and reshape the sound of modern guitar music.

When Knopfler auctioned off his guitar collection in 2024 many instruments sold for millions. But one stayed with him.

The 1961 Stratocaster that gave Sultans of Swing its voice.

It is family he said. You do not let that go.

As for the real Sultans of Swing the band in the lonely corner of that forgotten pub no one ever found them. They never knew their fading night of music became a spark that lit a legend.

But maybe that is the point. Greatness often begins where no one is looking.

Fun Fact: The entire solo for Sultans of Swing was improvised in the studio and remains one of the most studied guitar passages in modern music history.

But I've already ordered sixteen beers each from Slow Lane Brewing and Reckless Brewing.

I've decided to buy my craft beer directly rather than going to Dan Murphy's, in order to support different and regional brewers.

And let's face it '4 Pines' isn't a small craft brewery, it's just Asahi and CUB. I like Capital and Bent Spoke but I can buy them locally.

I'd love to support local brewing, smaller craft brewing, and in particular women brewers. But Two Birds Brewing has closed...

    Borrowed from fakebook.

My daughter came home from school and said,
“Mom, you’re not going to believe what happened in history class today.”

Her teacher told the class they were going to play a game.
He walked around the room and whispered to each kid whether they were a witch or just a regular person. Then he gave the instructions:

“Form the biggest group you can without a witch. If your group has even one, you all fail.”

She said the whole room instantly lit up with suspicion.
Everyone started interrogating each other. Are you a witch? How do we know you’re not lying?
Some kids clung to one big group, but most broke off into smaller, exclusive cliques. They turned away anyone who seemed uncertain, nervous, or gave off even the slightest hint of being guilty.

The energy shifted fast. Suddenly everyone was suspicious of everyone.
Whispers. Finger-pointing. Side-eyes. Trust dissolved in minutes.

Finally, when all the groups were formed, the teacher said,
“Alright, time to find out who fails. Witches, raise your hands.”

And not one hand went up.

The whole class exploded. “Wait! You messed up the game!”

And then the teacher dropped the bomb:
“Did I? Were there any actual witches in Salem, or did everyone just believe what they were told?”

My daughter said the room went dead silent.

That’s when it hit them. No witch was ever needed for the damage to happen. Fear had already done its work. Suspicion alone divided the entire class, turning community into chaos.

And isn’t that exactly what we’re seeing today?
    Different words, same playbook.
Instead of “witch,” it’s liberal, conservative, vaxxed, unvaxxed, pro-this, anti-that.
The labels shift, but the tactic is the same.

Get people scared. Get them suspicious. Get them divided.
Then sit back while trust crumbles.

The danger was never the witch.
The danger is the rumor. The suspicion. The fear. The planted lies.

Refuse the whisper. Don’t play the game. Because the second we start hunting “witches,” we’ve already lost.

One thing that I keep thinking about - to maintain hope - is the cyclical nature of history.

The past decade have felt like a modern version of the Middle Ages (or Dark Ages).

But what followed that? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The Age of Reason.

    Good morning. 🏖️🩴🌊

    8 September 2025

    Checks and Balances

Have you noticed that writing checks isn’t as popular as it once was? It’s very much a 20th-century thing. I still keep a checkbook and write the occasional check—usually to pay a bill that can’t be handled online, or for a larger purchase that my credit card might not accommodate. The checkbook isn’t forgotten; I still keep the ledger up to date.

I use a debit card now and then, though I prefer a credit card. The thing is, nowadays many small businesses charge extra when you use a credit card. Some even tack on fees for any card, which misses the point entirely—they’re not charged extra for processing a debit card. That’s yet another reason I might reach for a check.

Back in the 20th century—especially in the ’70s and ’80s—writing checks was common practice. People carried their checkbooks everywhere and used them for everything. Need gas? Write a check. Groceries? Write a check. Just want a cold soda? Write a check.

I still remember opening my first checking account and thinking, I have arrived. It took a lesson or two to learn about balancing the checkbook, and the statement you received in the mail didn’t always reflect your actual balance. Live and learn.

Nowadays, if I’m waiting in line at a store and the person ahead of me waits until all her items are scanned before digging through her purse—only to retrieve a checkbook—I might let out a silent sigh. I’d be careful not to show any emotion, not even impatience. Even if she waits until asked for ID to start rummaging again, my outward demeanor would remain impassive.

    For I remember when.

“Any general statement is like a check drawn on a bank. Its value depends on what is there to meet it.” — Ezra Pound

“The good old days weren’t always good, and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.” — Billy Joel

of a slightly enthusiastic Dutch Pixy :pixy_party: (Wednesday, 03/09/2025).

I had fallen asleep a tad early. I had woken up a few times during the night, feeling achy and sweaty (my age perhaps? 🤔). When I woke up again around midnight I was wide awake. I scrolled on my phone for a while and then I got ready to start my day a little earlier than planned.

Because I didn't sleep between 12-2, my sleep score was rather low this time, with only 74. But it was also because I had only slept around 6 hours tonight... My energy score was even lower, as it depends more on the time that you are asleep. Somehow you can't change your sleeping pattern hours in the energy score bit, and if you don't sleep between 12-2, as I mentioned, your sleep score goes down a lot. I only got a score of 57, saying my sleep was getting in danger. Well, I did have a bad night, but still... I've had worse...

Scale, meds, getting dressed. Got to Skoosh and we headed to the gym. As my PT had said what I was and wasn't allowed to do, I just started with the seated bike again. Then, I went to the treadmill. I felt a bit wobbly, like my right leg is a bit shorter than the left one. 🤔 Must ask my PT about this on Tuesday. I walked at 2,5kmh with a 2% incline for 0,25km. Then without the incline for 50 meters. It felt weird but also satisfying, in a way. Then I used the hip abductor (pushing the knees outward) on lowest setting for a wee bit, which went better than I expected. I almost wanted to add more weight, but I remembered the PT's warning and I didn't.

Then I got ready to head back home again. Back home, I changed my clothes and headed upstairs. I worked on my blog for a while. Got back down, where I wrote some bits on my tablet. After some writing and some telly, I got ready to head out for a walk. I played a little Ingress and managed to walk a bit further. When I got back, I made me some brekky.

After the food, I went upstairs and I rode my home trainer for half an hour. During that time, bestie called me and we had a nice chat while she rode to her work. I was a bit tired of the walk and riding, so I watched some telly on bed. When I was a tad more rested, and the weather seemed to improve a little, I decided to head out to for another walk.

After the walk, I was eagerly waiting for an update from DHL. They would deliver my pendant parcel to the parcel dispenser safe in town today. I was hoping they'd do it early, so I could walk to the supermarket (where the safe is) and retrieve it. I never used it before, so I hoped that it would be as easy as they said. But first, I needed an email with the code.

As it was dry, I went to Skoosh, who fortunately was parked behind the house, and I took out the special dog protection cover. I still need to hoover the car, but I need to be a bit more "bendy" to be able to do that. Maybe, if the weather os good enough, I will visit the car wash before PT next week and then get the hoover through it as well. It was a bit emotional to get the cover out. It felt like I was "getting rid of" Arwen from Skoosh. I still have her ball in my car and I won't take that out. I tried to get most of the sand out, I shook out the cover, and then I headed back inside.

I fixed some food, watched some telly, and tried to relax a bit. Around noon, I got the notification. Slipped on my shoes and headed to the store. It was a bit of a longer walk, as it was about 1km to the store, and then back again. So I was hoping that I could manage it... I got to the safe, didn't figure out how to scan the QR I got, so manually added the code. Got a sweet little box out of it, and then I started my walk back.

All went well, fortunately. When I got home, I unpacked the box and found a beautiful pendant. It really looked wonderful. It was heavier than I thought, so I need to get used to wearing the weight, and I won't wear it everywhere, as I am scared something may happen to it. But yeah, I loved it! I tried to take a snap of it to share with some family and friends. I got a tad emotional because of it, so I spent some time sobbing and such. And then I got very tired, so I tried to relax with some telly. I had managed to get to 10k steps, and I had done some exercises, so I felt good about myself. Tired and a bit sore, but good.

After some telly I decided I would change my clothes, take my meds, get my eReader and just read until I would doze off. I fell asleep rather soon/early, around 16:11, or so my watch told me. But then, I was very tired, so I guess it was for the best... I woke up twice during the night for the loo. Around 0:42 I got up and started my day, as I felt rested enough now. My watch told me I had slept a little over 8 hours, so that was a good thing. Ready to start my new day.

of a slightly distracted Dutch Pixy :pixy_party: (Sunday, 31/08/2025).

I woke up after some hours of sleep, around 4:10. As I wanted to slowly ease into the "new routine", to try out what I thought out for a new schedule, after all the changes, I got up and started my day.

My sleep score was at 87 with an "excellent", although for me, anything below 90 may feel as good, but not excellent 🤔. My energy score got to 79, "good", and it told me to relax today... Well, I wanted to relax some, but I also had a few chores to do.

I got to the scale, which showed a 1,3 kilo increase since the last time I weighed before the vacation. I guess part of it was the good food, it I also think part of it is the edema in my legs, especially around my ankles and calfs, as I am "thicker" there now, and it's fluid in there...

I got dressed and then I headed upstairs. I worked on my journal og post for a while. When I did all I could, I headed back downstairs. I didn't have things for brekky, but I had saved one Knoppers and one Balisto, so I ate those now. I got my tablet and wrote one journal Toot, the one from Friday. I went back upstairs, and I found that my PC had not shut down after the update, so I turned it off myself. Then I got to the home trainer and I rode for a while. Got to 8km, which took me about 22 minutes.

I took down the laundry that was still hanging. I headed downstairs again, and put the laundry in the bedroom. Then I went for a walk... 😊 Trying to get my exercise in. It was drizzling and it was annoying, because it didn't seem "rainy" enough to use the umbrella. But without it my headphones got way too moist, and I didn't want to wear the hood.

I got back and worked on my Saturday journal Toot. When it was 8:45, I got my bag and headed to Skoosh. We drove to Lidl, and of course I had to wait for a passing train (always my luck 😂). When I arrived they just opened, so I went in, got my things, paid, and headed back home again.

I fixed brekky and then I went for another walk. Weather was a bit better now, so I tried a little longer walk this time. I worked on a blog post as I hobbled along. I continued that post when I got home, even though it was one for Friday, and I needed one for Monday... Ah well, that's how my brain works I guess... 😇

It took some work and then I finished the blog post. I remembered that I had to start the laundry. And it was time to fix something to eat. So those two things were next up on the list of chores. After food had been eaten, I hung the laundry out to dry. I tried to relax a bit on the bed in the living room. My ankles and calfs were rather thick with edema, so I could do with some levitation of my feetsies.

While I was on the bed, I started a new blog for Monday on my phone. After a bit, I went out for one more walk. Then I took my meds and changed my clothes and I hoped to get some snoozing in, so I would be rested enough to visit the gym during the night. I was tired enough, but first, my edema near my hip started acting up. And then I got a headache because I was too exhausted, so the pains I was experiencing prevented me from getting what I needed the most: sleep.

It took way too long for me to finally be able to fall asleep. When my alarm went off, I pulled up my legs to start my back exercises. When I got ready to get up, I got a weird shock, as it was an hour later than when the alarm went off! Had I set the alarm wrong, or did I fall asleep with my legs pulled up that way??? I still don't know what happened, but yeah, it was time to try and start the new day...

of a triggered and exhausted Dutch Pixy :pixy_party: (Saturday, 30/08/2025).

I got up in the morning and felt quite OK. A bit tired but I felt I'd be OK enough to drive us home again today. My sleep score was at "excellent" with 90 points and my energy score was at "excellent" as well with 92 points.

I got dressed and packed some more of my things. When mum texted me that she was ready, I headed to her to help. We got ready to walk with Bas. We went to the bakery again today, to get some fresh buns for brekky and the drive home. Mum and I had breakfast and we had been busy packing all the things we could. And now, we had to wait for dad, as usual.

But of course he was being his usual self, meaning grumpy and getting up late (well, late to mum and me). And then being so slow, that by the time I could pack the car (dad had promised to help, so of course he was in too much pain to do more than drink coffee and check his phone), the traffic on our way was getting more busy. If mum and I could have packed and gone when we were ready, I think (as I can't be sure of course) that our journey would have been about 90 minutes faster, at least. And we would have gotten home earlier as well.

But, around 11:20, we finally were able to go. We were just on the highway, and mum had to wee... Hmm... She was getting all agitated because she had to go badly but there were no available places to go for quite a few kilometers. I tried my best to get to a parking with loo asap, but with all the road constructions and closed off parkings... We got to one, mum was glad. And then, we were on our way again.

About an hour later, mum had to go again! And well, the same thing happened of course with getting to a loo... It took a while to get to one... Mum went for a wee, dad went too, and I walked with Bas a bit to stretch my legs. Normally, mum needs to go once but never like this... She suspected that she had taken her evening pills this morning, which include one that well, helps her wee a lot. We had many traffic jams due to road construction. What could have been a ± 3 hour drive (without pee and fag brakes) became a 5 hour one. We had left late, we arrived late... I was so tired already, and I wasn't even home yet.

I unpacked the car and got my things in Skoosh. Then I went to the snackbar to get food for my parents and me. After the food, which was quite welcome, I headed to Skoosh and we went home together. I unloaded my things and then had to drive two streets over to find parking. The few spots we had here, several were now taken by the construction mess as well. Many people were parked in a messy way... I wish they'd hurry up so that we can finally be mess free and have normal parking spots... 😔

Mum had told me that she "may" get a speeding ticket as she had been driving Skoosh a bit too fast when she went to Germany one day. Well, the ticket had arrived. But "a wee bit fast" was more than I ever got... And of course it was in my name, as the car is registered to my name. They clocked her with 62 in a 50 zone, and when the correction happened, she got fined for 9kmh too much. But that meant that Skoosh' display must have shown at least 64...in a 50 zone. Ugh, that triggered me quite a bit. I never speed, and never like that... I got two speeding tickets in 25 years, which were for 1 and 3 kmh too fast after correction... I took a snap of the fine, texted it to mum so they could pay, and went on with my things, still annoyed over the "little bit too fast" thingie...

When I was finally done with unpacking my bags, and I had taken my pills to relax in bed, and maybe doze off, dad texted me. I got a weird text that I didn't understand so I asked what he meant. He kept saying that I didn't get all the info of the fine and he could not pay it that way. I got up again, double checked, and everything was perfectly visible in the snap... There was nothing else, all was visible and readable with some zooming in. But... They gave the option to use a QR code to easily pay. And I think that was why dad didn't want to pay it himself... So after being nagged at, I offered to pay for them if they'd send me the money. They did, I used the QR code and within 15 seconds, all was paid and done. Yeah... What a load of crap dad... It wasn't complete eej? Ugh...

I finally got ready to relax. I watched some telly and then I got my eReader and I fell asleep while reading. I woke up a few times for the loo and all. Around 4:15, I was up again and decided to start my day.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 670 , Thursday 28/08/2025

    Thursday started around 06:45.

It’s been a reasonably quiet day, the highlight was the washing machine engineer rocking up at around 10am & completing the repairs to the washer - this has made Mrs S very happy!

I got a nice quite unexpected present from a long time Fedi-friend, who will remain nameless but I hope they read this & understand how grateful I am! 😊

Mrs S got back from seeing various folk around 2pm so between us we managed to return the garage to some semblance of normality!

Spent the afternoon retreating into Night City - a world I can very much more easily cope with!

    Final Thoughts.

There has been a big update to No Man’s Sky - Voyagers - which looks interesting, I might have to try & divide my time between Night City & the NMS universe!

I also need to try & get past my MH issues, get walking again & get back to studying computing again.

It has become far too easy to hide away from an increasingly horrific world. When parties in the Americas & the Middle East blatantly abuse the sanctuary of holy places & especially hospitals it is less & less a world in which I wish to participate in. Give me a virtual world full of baddies any day of the week!

Thank you to all those who are helping me on this journey, in a myriad different ways. I am thankful to each & every one of you! 🫂 🫶🐿️🖖

& G’day Squirrel Fans, hope I find you bright eyed & bushy tailed!

Thursday has arrived looking damp & a bit ruffled.

Here’s hoping today is the day that yon washing machine engineer turns up - lets just say that he won’t be getting a good review or recommendation unless he can come up with a really good excuse!

Another day of hiding away is on the cards here in deepest, darkest Yorkshire.

Cashew later Peeps, have a fabulously nutty day ! 😊🫶:party_major_squirrel:🖖
