Life is a preposterous horror.

Money speaks for money, the devil for his own
Who comes to speak for the skin and the bone?

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.

Une oasis d'horreur dans un désert d'ennui.

I’m actually shocked that folks I speak to here in Ireland are still planning holidays in the USA.

@aral Because a bunch of amoral people want to have fun and don't care about the expense it comes at. I mean, international air travel right now is basically environmental suicide of the highest order and you can't convince people that they are drowning the very beaches they are visiting.

People suck.

My first reaction isn't Godly though, it's more along the lines of fuck you you absentee landlord why do we have to do this shit for you? Why do you get the credit? We are kinder to each other, at more cost, than you are with divine power. If you wanted to run away and be silent then you don't deserve the love you get.

    Who will win the Ukraine war?

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @randahl The arms dealers and the politicians they fund. The whole point is to keep this thing going on for as long as absolutely possible to milk every dollar out of the situation, while very slowly bleeding a Russia that ultimately will never be able to compete.

    Ideally, we would make it so Ukraine wins right away. We are not the class of people who fund politics though.

    Is this a punitive task? Is this make work? Is this just trying to put police officers in the public vision? Is it because manual makes traffic measurably more efficient? Good morning. 🏖️🩴🌊

    8 September 2025

    Checks and Balances

    Have you noticed that writing checks isn’t as popular as it once was? It’s very much a 20th-century thing. I still keep a checkbook and write the occasional check—usually to pay a bill that can’t be handled online, or for a larger purchase that my credit card might not accommodate. The checkbook isn’t forgotten; I still keep the ledger up to date.

    I use a debit card now and then, though I prefer a credit card. The thing is, nowadays many small businesses charge extra when you use a credit card. Some even tack on fees for any card, which misses the point entirely—they’re not charged extra for processing a debit card. That’s yet another reason I might reach for a check.

    Back in the 20th century—especially in the ’70s and ’80s—writing checks was common practice. People carried their checkbooks everywhere and used them for everything. Need gas? Write a check. Groceries? Write a check. Just want a cold soda? Write a check.

    I still remember opening my first checking account and thinking, I have arrived. It took a lesson or two to learn about balancing the checkbook, and the statement you received in the mail didn’t always reflect your actual balance. Live and learn.

    Nowadays, if I’m waiting in line at a store and the person ahead of me waits until all her items are scanned before digging through her purse—only to retrieve a checkbook—I might let out a silent sigh. I’d be careful not to show any emotion, not even impatience. Even if she waits until asked for ID to start rummaging again, my outward demeanor would remain impassive.

    For I remember when.

    “Any general statement is like a check drawn on a bank. Its value depends on what is there to meet it.” — Ezra Pound

    “The good old days weren’t always good, and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.” — Billy Joel

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @Swede1952 I don't know how it works where you are, but checks are 100% revocable in my neck of the woods and are the kind of nightmare pain in the ass that I will refuse to accept.

    In North America, you can call and cancel your check for months after it has been written. Which is a problem if you're a merchant and then suddenly the money you thought you had deposited is poofed out of your bank account but the customer has your product.

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @Swede1952 Some bastard from the province over, stops in at my store and orders some groceries, pays me with money that disappears, and then eats the food? Or dealing with senior citizens who don't understand why you don't accept checks?

    There's a legal remedy but it's going to cost you more to deal with than you will from just eating the loss.

    Just an example.

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @Swede1952 Thanks, checks have been my bugbear for a little while now thanks to what I do.

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @Swede1952 @raymierussell @vfrmedia That's not the problem with checks though, online or otherwise.

    Here's the problem:

    I write you a check and buy some food.

    You cash my check. Maybe you even spend the money on something yourself.

    Two months later, I call my bank and tell them to revoke the check I wrote.

    Without your consent, my bank calls your bank and takes my money back.

    That's the problem. For any reason checks can be revoked, unlike a bank wire or what have you.

    The UK hates antisemitism so much that here they are arresting the daughter of a Holocaust survivor for protesting Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

    Wait, no that doesn’t make sense… so maybe they don’t hate antisemitism but they love fascism and genocide? I guess that makes more sense given their history of colonialism and slavery.

    If you buy weapons, we don't care who you use them on. and never will. Foreigners? Who cares? Your own citizens? Fine. Women and children you want to starve to death? Great. We'll shield you from international criticism, and we'll jail our own citizens before we inconvenience you, our dear customer.

    It's a great sales pitch.

    Many Russians ignore Putin's killing of civilians in Ukraine, because they think it is inconsequential to themselves.

    What they fail to realized is, it is exactly because of their acceptance of these war crimes, that every living Russian will be paying reparations to Ukraine for the rest of their lives, after Putin loses this war.

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @txtx @randahl I would love for that to be the case, I really genuinely would, I just haven't seen it happen recently for any important nation out doing bad things.

    PatrickoftheG ,

    If Ireland wanted Israel to stop killing civilians, they could boycott $ 3.2 billion worth of Israeli exports.

    The Netherlands could boycott $ 2.7 billion of Israel's exports.

    Germany could boycott $ 2.4 billion.

    The UK, France, Italy — same story.

    But apparently, to these countries it is profitable to let the killings continue, and so Israel will keep killing civilians. Every day.

    Future generations will struggle to understand the choices our generations made.

    PatrickoftheG ,
    @PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

    @randahl I think it's inspiring that Israel has given the rest of the world a roadmap to getting away with ethnic cleansing on easy mode; the real trick is getting other countries to profit from it in the smallest way, and they will be beating down your door to help you kill people.
