    @JessTheUnstill i think this is one of the - not talked about - reasons why there are so few black people on Fedi.

    coppercrush ,
    @coppercrush@beige.party avatar

    @JessTheUnstill

    Bear with me because its hard to give a complete answer and I hope you give me the benefit of the doubt because holy hell this issue is complicated. I'll do my best, as a white observer.

    To give a 'sound bite' answer, this place can be a lot like a golf course, very prim and rules oriented and dare-i-say uppity, and black people don't want to hang out at a 'golf course'. I a black academic account make the comment once, stating 'this place is lacking black joy', as an explanation for the small population, and that really clicked for me. It goes way beyond moderation - it's a culture issue, and the white culture here not only does not appreciate, on the whole, black culture, but also seeks to actively police any culture that deviates from their own.

    This place is very white, the culture is very white, and the cultural rules structure reflects that (which is a huge problem without an algorithm). I'm thinking about all the ways in which black culture is policed by white culture in person (hair, language, mannerisms, clothing, etc). The same is true in online communities, and it potentially could feel worse in some ways because there's this expectation of anonymity and freedom online.

    Black people online want a break from all the rules they have to follow to exist in white society. So coming to Fedi in contrast to other social media, there has to be this culture shock when it comes to things like CWs and alt-text, for instance (these are the obvious examples, but it goes way deeper to general policing/ scolding). Because there is no algorithm, any baked-in cultural anti-blackness means that black accounts have no way of getting reach - they are forced to conform to the existing white-dominated boost structure. Accounts that don't immediately conform to these rules are at a huge disadvantage.

    To be clear, I'm not arguing against the use of Alt and CWs - these are very neat accessibility and moderation tools, but these tools were largely built (or at least are presently implemented) with a white user base in mind. I frankly find the idea of a white person badgering a black person to CW politics extremely offensive. There is a reason why you don't see black accounts using CWs: in their day to day lives they have to go out of their way to make white people comfortable with their blackness, so they will be damned if they have to protect white people online from their daily experiences. This is a problematic, not talked about component to the conversation around CWs. This applies to any of the types of policing that is seen on the platform, which I believe disproportionately affects and targets non-white users.

    Back to your original post, Fedi has a scold problem. And, I'm imagining, from the perspective of a black person, that is really off-putting, to say the least. I believe that black people in particular are vulnerable and repeatedly exposed to this type of behavior policing that, whatever the intent, in practice keeps this place more white.

    We keep seeing startups who want to replace something valuable (therapy, counseling, tutoring, artistic expression) with some tech bullshit under the banner of democratization. But why do we need to invest so much in bad tech that doesn't work instead of just giving people access to what they need?

    This is a sign for how fucking atrophied our mental muscles are. How limited our space for thinking about how things should be.

    You want to democratize "going to therapy"? Make it "free" as in paid by socialized healthcare. You want to democratize "making art"? Give people money and free time to express themselves.

    None of these things are meaningfully addressed through tech. It's always about the political struggle to give people what they need and deserve.

    The entirety of the US economy in the 21st century has been a tech bubble, and AI is the thing that is finally going to cause it to burst. Its perfectly ironic and fitting that they created a technology that literally eats itself and its forebears.

    The monopolists have finally run dry of easy shit to sell us junkies. Currently we are snorting baking soda and watching Bluey while they consolidate everything they can politically before we finally hit bottom. As painful as it is going to be, the only way out is through. Politically, its going to open a lot of doors. Sobriety can be both beautiful and deadly.

    @gerrymcgovern I think this also relates to the intergenerational divide, the breakdown of communication, and our inability/unwillingness to ask for help. It has disrupted the learning process that connects people of different experience levels, reducing our ability to form relationships. Just google it has replaced asking for help or collaborating to solve a problem. It has made us less patient and less accepting of differences in learning styles/backgrounds, which is particularly bad for disabled/marginalized/neurodivergent/poor folk who were never silicon valleys target audience to begin with.

    A friendly, gentle PSA:

    Especially if you consume a lot of news these days, please be aware that all of the fear and uncertainty that is scrawled across every headline and is the basis for everything coming out of Washington activates the limbic system in your brain. That's the deep animal part of your noggin that puts you into a survival-panic. The evolutionary purpose of this system is to shut down the logical parts of your brain and make you run, now, to survive.

    The actual, literal objective of the firehose of terror they're drowning us in is to put as many people as possible into limbic system burnout, a state of long-term, perhaps permanent, limbic system activation. So, please, check your timeline and your posting habits. Consider the ratios in there of joy to fear--and adjust things toward joy, going forward, if you need to.

    They need us to feel vulnerable all the time.

    If you're in limbic burnout, you can't fight back.

    I've read most of the thread and responses and I think you are trying to start a really important conversation. I think so much of what you describe is how social media has 'destroyed' our ability to healthily converse with people who aren't exactly like us. Completely relate to what you are describing with RSD.

    I have been taking breaks from this site recently and have mostly stopped bothering trying to comment because effort in does not remotely equal result out. Then again, I keep coming back, because its something I want to figure out and I want to have an online social life. I want to have meaningful conversation and I think the culture of these platforms is to favor scroll scroll scroll and move on, don't engage. Or only find people who are exactly like you, who interact in exactly the same way (the classic echo chamber). So many of the people who do engage learned to do so in a snarky, critical context (I'm not immune to this). The good thing is every once and awhile I'll find a really pleasant exception and I'm trying to figure out how to have more of those.

    I'm also from an awful individualistic culture where we make things so much worse for ourselves and social media has brought out the worst of these tendencies. I've always wondered what social media from collectivist cultures is like.
