Macro photograph of a furry, 8 legged animal with large saucer eyes, looking up at us, begging with its foremost appendages held expectantly in front, perhaps for a morsel, just one little piece of whatever you're eating.
"Researchers discovered a #spider web spanning about 1,140 square feet in a narrow passage between Albania and Greece. The web houses around 111,000 spiders, including two species of #spiders that had previously been thought to be hostile to each other."
I've been a practicing scientist since 1990, and it never ceases to amaze me just how much time it takes to pull together a journal manuscript. These two figures alone took about 16 hours (it's how I spent this weekend)--and that doesn't count the time spent practicing to get to the point that I could get this quality of images. Whew! Done!
These are the palps and epigyne of wolf spiders, documenting a new species.
Palps (male reproductive structures) of a spider showing three angles. It's a fuzzy bulb containing many complex structures with curves, points, and angles.
I just pulled a spider out of my ear! I kept feeling like I had water in there - hearing the sort of gurgling sound you get when you've been swimming, and it was beginning to annoy me, so I did what you'd not supposed to do, and probed around in there with something inappropriate. It came this little bundle of "fluff", that turned out to be a small spider! I'm fortunately not scared of spiders, but this has left me quite freaked out to say the least. #bugs#spiders#creepy
My fingertip with a tiny 4mm long dead spider on it, with only a couple of legs still attached.
I'm an #enby from #Mexico and not new to the Fediverse, but haven't been around recently. I had an account at queer.party and, since that instance is gone now, I'm looking to find new connections, so feel free to follow if we share interests or recommend accounts to follow.
I love all things #horror (mostly films) and am very fond of #80sHorror, you can check my Letterboxd out to see my reviews. My fave film is Chopping Mall (1986).
I usually don't watch shows now, I hate when they get cancelled and the story gets no proper ending, which happens a lot, but you can also find me at Serializd.
My reading list is predominantly #CrimeFiction (mainly Nordic) but I also like reading horror, #QueerRomance, and anything that piques my curiosity.
I'm some kind of a #geek and enjoy #FOSS, my main OS has been #LinuxMint for 5 years now, and I have an old laptop for distrohopping, currently using #Manjaro and #Debian. My secondary OS is #macOS.
A vertically oriented illustrated opera poster dominated by deep blue and teal tones. At the center is a stylized adult woman depicted in a theatrical, early-20th-century Art Nouveau style. She has pale skin, softly blushed cheeks, red lips, and wavy blond hair partially covered by a red headpiece. Her head tilts back slightly, eyes half-closed, giving an expressive, dramatic pose rather than a portrait-like gaze. Her arms are extended outward and upward, creating a wide, flowing shape across the image.
She wears a vivid red costume with decorative gold accents and stockings, over which a large blue spider motif is integrated into the design. The spider’s body is centered on her torso, with long, dark blue legs extending outward across her body and into the surrounding space, visually merging with the flowing fabric. A translucent, swirling teal veil or cape billows around her, filling most of the background and suggesting motion, like water or air currents. Small yellow shapes—possibly stylized petals or sparks—are scattered throughout the veil, adding texture and movement.
The background is a flat, dark blue with no architectural or landscape details, emphasizing the figure and costume. At the bottom left, bold decorative lettering reads “Il Ragno Azzurro,” and beneath it, in smaller text, “di A. Randegger.” At the bottom right appears “Edizioni Ricordi,” indicating the publisher. The typography is hand-drawn, curving, and consistent with early 20th-century poster design.
A female and male Ornamental Tree Trunk Spider (Herennia multipuncta) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore on 22 Nov 2025. They make a lovely couple. 🙂
Two spiders sitting on a tree truck, surrounded by a spider web that is flat against the trunk. The female is larger and has an orange body and a large yellow abdomen with small red dots. The smaller male is red and is sitting on top of the female's abdomen.
A large, almost 4cm spider hanging in a web outside my backdoor. It is probably an Orbweaver. It seems to only have three of the usual four front legs.
It's also large. Did I mention it is large? Because it is. Large, that is. And spiky. And hairy. And I'd really like to use the grill on my deck that's out of focus to the right, but I don't want to fight this spider for the opportunity.
Also, there's and invisible pink unicorn on the left side.
The web, by the way, is 45cm in diameter. And it's across my back door.
"Vincetoxicum nakaianum (a #dogbane species native to #Japan described only a year ago) mimics the smell of #ants attacked by #spiders. This scent attracts #flies that feed on these injured #insects and pollinate the #flowers in the process."

In general I hate all spiders, especially in the house, but the orb-weavers are welcome in the gardens.
This cross orb-weaver spider isn't as flashy as the yellow orb-weavers I've seen in past years. #Spiders
@TheWeeOwl Just the one! It won't be much of a tea party. 🕷️☕🫖
(oddly recalled some posts from early in the summer)😁
Photo of cross orb-weaver spider on its web, with blurry light colored house siding in the background. Spider's body is shades of tan and brown, with a line on white dots running along its middle. Legs have alternating areas of dark brown and off-white.
Our graduate student Steven found this unusual two-eyed spider last night out in hill country. If you spend any time staring at spider faces, you’ll know most have 8 or 6 eyes, or maybe none at all for cave dwellers.
Macro photo of a broad, orange spider with stout legs standing on limestone, facing us. A small black dot at the front of the head, if you look closely, has two lenses.
Spider (Huntsman species? I am not sure) climbing on wire mesh screen. Hairy body, thorny striped legs, beautiful movement. Blurry blue sky and a piece of arid landscape are reflected on the glass behind.
2024 was a productive year for bug photography. I haven’t picked my favorites, but this crab spider hiding in goldenrod is a contender. #spiders#camouflage#nature#thomisidae
Photograph of a spire of small yellow flowers against a clear blue sky, evoking the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Amid the flowers at lower right is a crab spider of the same hue, blending in.
