Anyone has a clue which is the correct, current "search suggestion" string to use for Qwant when I just want to add it as search engine and not install their browser extension? (Why would I install an extension for every little thing?!)

Twórcy przeglądarek internetowych mają często interes w tym, żeby nakłaniać do korzystania z tej czy innej wyszukiwarki. Nie bez powodu któraś konkretnie jest ustawiona jako domyślna. Ale możecie zrobić z tym porządek i ustawić, jako domyślna, dowolną wyszukiwarkę. Wystarczy postępować zgodnie z instrukcją (przykład opisany na #Firefox). Ja na przykład ustawiłem sobie teraz #Qwant. Wcześniej miałem Startpage, Ecosia i DuckDuckGo. Nie przywiązuję się do jednej konkretnej. Ostatnio bardzo mieszam i siadam, która jak sobie działa.

OVH has acquired Qwant and the company has new ownership.
"Octave Klaba, founder of France-headquartered cloud hosting services business OVHcloud, is set to acquire faltering search engine Qwant. Mr. Klaba has struck an agreement with state lender Caisse des Depots et Consignations (CDC) to take control of the company, which has struggled to compete with Google despite being backed by the French government.
The deal will see Octave Klaba and his brother Miroslaw own 75% of Synfonium, a new company that will acquire Qwant, with the remaining 25% held by CDC."

"Frankly, in 2019, building a search engine was not affordable for Qwant and it never was," he said. "The mistake was not to explain that and try to hide it. Qwant has been focused on privacy. And the team had worked hard on a solution with Microsoft that meant it didn't share data with Microsoft."
Even now, New Qwant will need a 3rd party to help with long-tail search results. Still, the transformation at New Qwant was underway when Microsoft dropped a bomb: It was dramatically raising its search API rates. This change also hit other search engines like Ecosia that relied on Bing.
"18 months ago, Microsoft changed access to Bing's search API," he said. "They increased the price without any good reason. All of us realized that we were so dependent on Microsoft that their strategy change could kill us. We decided we should not be in the passenger side but that we should be in the driver's seat."
So Qwant and Ecosia teamed up to create a 50-50 joint venture called the European Search Perspective (EUSP). Qwant will transfer the search indexing infrastructure it was building as well as some of its engineers and data scientists. Ecosia is making a cash contribution."

As a Netscape/Mozilla user, I can't remember when I became a Firefox user but really early on. All this time it has been my browser for everything (first) and then for personal use (see below). I have collected stickers, I have met Mozilla Foundation staff, and I even applied a long time ago. +

51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.
This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.
