I have some bad news. $ORGANISATION has failed to reach its funding target in $YEAR. We are $RANDOM() short of our $RANDOM() funding goal.

Only by guilting you are we able to make our funding goal this year.

So! This mastodon instance (mastodon.gamedev.place) has 136 custom "emojis" representing various engines & tools often used in gamedev. I made all of them 2+ years ago. Which notable ones have popped up since then that we are missing out on? Here are all the current ones: https://github.com/aras-p/gamedev-emojis

So there's this startup aiming to put GPU farms in space because of cheap solar power but... how are they going to cool it? The vacuum of space is an insulator! The ISS uses huge radiators- their concept video shows a big solar grid but no radiators!

Modern spacecraft radiators can dissipate about 100W per sq meter. So for a 5 GW data center in space, you'd need 50 square km of radiators alone. Their video shows a 16 sq km solar array- where is all of the heat going???

Despite the US government shutdown, Visitor Centers and campgrounds in all Utah National Parks are open and it's business as usual. This includes Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion.

The state of Utah is diverting "dedicated funds" to keep the parks open and operating normally.

I recommended Dead Horse Point state park in Utah to you before. Standing by it. If you go near Moab for Arches or Canyonlands it’s well located and is just breathtaking.

An epic road trip to visit 12 National Parks begins today! 10 of them will be brand new to me.

@killyourfm we did a very similar trip last year. Please please please add Dead Horse Point state park just outside of Moab to your list. It’s breathtaking (but don’t forget it has no water there because it’s above the water table by quite a lot).

Also Kodachrome state park is gorgeous too. Utah has a glut of wonderful state parks that are overlooked because of Bryce and Zion.

I’m so satisfied with how today turned out. It would have been so easy to let the negativity from lack of sleep overwhelm me.

Instead, I enjoyed some coffee in the mountains, got some contract writing work done with a river view, and even cooked up some pretzel bun pizzas for dinner 😋

    Enjoy your weekend. Stay positive!

As I hiked the last 5 miles of the Oregon Coast Trail, my best friend spent several hours secretly running all over Brookings to set up this amazing finish line for me AND had an ice cold beer waiting. Seriously, this woman deserves all the good karma in the world.

With 320x480 iPhone screens, we had to be economical for navigation, tools, and the content view. (BTW, the content view is UI. The entire app is UI.)

Screens got wider and taller, which gave us more space for the content view, without having to sacrifice navigation and tools.

But look what happened. In many cases, it actually got much worse, with vertical space eaten up by things that were never even visible before.

So why are we now sacrificing navigation and tools?

Aside from unsafe highway walking, I have tried my best not to cheat the Oregon Coast Trail. I want to walk the entire coastline. Experience everything.

But today is testing my resolve. Today’s 14 mile hike is part of the Oregon Dunes Natl Recreation Area. The shoreline is sloped, which wrecks your knee after awhile. Also the softest sand I’ve walked on thus far, at a time when I really need that nice, hard, compact sand.

    And blisters.

But there WAS pure joy earlier with canine trail friends.

You know, I could write a whole blog post about this—and I might—but I think we need to start addressing the very likely possibility that the entire thesis that “UI should get out of the way” and “apps should focus on content” is wrong.

Apps aren’t just for looking at photos or videos. They’re for navigating through these things, organizing them, editing them. The tools to do those things should not get out of the way. They should be clearly defined and separate from the content.

    ALT
    schwa ,
    @schwa@mastodon.social avatar

@louie yup. Completely agree. For many apps the content is the UI.

I would say if a FIXME has been there for 8 years then it's empirically not a priority and that's fine. I prefer a FIXME staying for 8 years and conveying an intent or a thought through time, while not getting in the way; rather than a JIRA task being deleted after 1-2 years because prod decided to cleanup.
