We have some great (free!) resources to help students, teachers, and anyone else with stress management and emotional self-regulation.

We feel like everyone could use some extra support at the moment, so here are some resources you might find helpful as a teacher, a parent, or for your personal use.

This is a spur-of-the-moment thread, so apologies in advance for typos, errors and omissions.

"We may not all be equally guilty. But we are all equally responsible for building a decent and just society."

Teach about Disinformation and Social Media with film! Check out our newest resources to help you prepare students with critical thinking skills and an informed understanding of social media, disinformation and media literacy.

Our film guide for And So It Begins features profiles Nobel-prize winner Maria Ressa (shown in the attached video talking with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show). This teaching resource explores how social media and disinformation can fragmented perceptions of reality in ways that influence politics and everyday people. It's a great tool to get students thinking critically about how online media affects them and their world.

Get more relevant, timely media literacy resources at the link:

@histodons @pilipinas @violencestudies

In a short clip from The Daily Show, Nobel Prize winner Maria Resser speaks with host Jon Stewart. Maria: By Design, these platforms spread lies: Social Media spreads lies, by a 2018 MIT study, at least 16 times faster. So by design, lies spread faster. That's the incentive. And then in 2017, we saw, in our country, in the Philippines, that if you lace it with fear, anger, and hate, it can go viral. That's the incentive structure. So that was used to attack us. Now imagine, if you're pumped full of — in the Nobel lecture, I called it Toxic Sludge. Online violence is real-world violence. So they hacked our biology. Thinking fast, thinking slow — we're thinking fast people. Our emotions, they change the way we feel — Jon: Reptilian. Maria: — to change the way we look at the world, to change the way we act, to change the way we vote. And as of March this year, V-Dem in Sweden said that 72% of the world is now under authoritarian rule. That we are electing illiberal leaders democratically because of insidious manipulation. So they go hand in hand, money and power. Jon: And now with the horrific events in Utah, everybody has the Zapruder film of it in their pocket. Maria: And it wasn't taken down on Social Meida. Jon: No. Maria: Right? Yeah. Jon: Horrifying.

With many people cancelling their streaming service, we want to point out that many of the films in our library stream for free!

They may be on free platforms like Kanopy, or the filmmakers may put them on YouTube or Vimeo. Some filmmakers also offer special free educational licenses or even packages.

The educational game in our collection called "Walden, a game", also offers a free version to educators.

How to find our free films

  1. Check out the films in our resource library.
  2. Look for viewing details in the "Where to Watch" section of a film's page.
  3. If that takes you to a link on JustWatch.com, make sure to adjust the site to your own country settings for local results.

If you have questions about our films and film guides, please ask! We're here to help and we love connecting people with great films and teaching tools. 1/2

We're excited to announce the newest film guides at Journeys in Film: The Fast Runner Holocaust Education Resources!

In The Fast Runner, a young Polish girl comes of age in 1938 during the rise of the Nazi party and subsequently the Holocaust. She is challenged by the compassion shown by her Rabbi toward their oppressors, and faces a critical test of her beliefs. The film helps viewers connect personally to the tragedy of the Holocaust and the dehumanizing impact of hatred and oppression. This 15-minute short film is a powerful teaching tool!

Inspire public service in your classroom and community with Resisterhood! Today we're highlighting Luis and Soraida Gutierrez, subjects of our new documentary Resisterhood from director Cheryl Jacobs Crim. Luis Gutierrez, a longtime Congressman from Chicago, led the charge to boycott the 2017 Inauguration, and his wife Soraida inspired their participation in the first Women’s March. Luis's story also highlights the Puerto Rican community and speaks broadly to the modern American immigrant experience.

The section on the Gutierrez Family in the Resisterhood Learning Guide explores the different ways elected officials can work inside a system or challenge it from the outside. It includes great extension activities to pursue civic engagement. For grades 10-12, higher ed and adult learning. It's great for campus screenings and community education, too!
