Is everything everywhere at once?

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar deadsuperhero , to random

Like Pixelfed and PeerTube, Loops is in a weird spot of technically being very very good, but lacking dedicated people to make media specifically for it.

I think these platforms would benefit tremendously by aggressively courting the creators on YouTube and Tiktok and Instagram Reels to try creating stuff on the Fediverse.

TIL about Boney M and it’s fantastic! I listened to them earlier coz went to a disco aerobics class and asked the instructor what magic my ears just sexperienced

ICYMI “ Boney M. is a reggae, funk and disco music group founded in 1974 in West Germany. It achieved popularity during the disco era in the second half of the 1970s.”

🧵 The Big 7 media giants shaping what most of the world watches, streams, and reads

  1. Comcast: NBCUniversal, Sky, Peacock — cable, broadband, and Hollywood rolled into one

  2. Disney: Marvel, Star Wars, ESPN, ABC — nostalgia and your kids’ favorite shows

  3. Warner Bros. Discovery: HBO, CNN, Max — drama, news, and nature docs

  4. Paramount: CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon — big in broadcast and streaming

  5. Sony: Movies, music, PlayStation — cross-cultural dominance

  6. Netflix: Originals, algorithms, binge culture — the global studio in your pocket

  7. Amazon: Prime Video, MGM, Twitch — retail entertainment meets surveillance capitalism

They own the pipelines and the stories.

What does mean when 7 companies shape the global feed?

Can federated media offer real alternatives?

Crissy OP ,
@Crissy@tech.lgbt avatar

Started thinking more about media concentration after Brew Build 2.

Someone raised the question: how do decentralized platforms respond when most of the global feed is shaped by a handful of corporations?

It’s not just about hosting your own server or using open protocols. It’s about rethinking how stories are made, shared, and sustained outside corporate ecosystems.

Are we building new media, or just federating the old one?

Would love to hear from folks working on federated zines, podcasts, video hubs, alt-distribution tools (anything that challenges the default).

Drop links, ideas, critiques. Let’s map the alternatives. Thanks!

Poll [1 of 4]:

Do you refer to your friends as "bro"?

Crissy ,
@Crissy@tech.lgbt avatar

@mcc tech friends yes, occasionally use "bro"

gym or other friends, specially outside of fediverse, have tried bro and they don't appreciate it

context: I've gotten dirty looks in the weight room when i asked to work-in on a machine (these are friends, not strangers)

(male or female) either confused or offended when I use "Bro" so now i just ask when they're done. I thought bro would soften it but nah

Hey @Crissy , @Gina & @_elena - I am not sure what customs apply and if it's appropriate, but I wanted to introduce you to each other. (I believe, Gina & Elena, you know (of?) each other already?)

Gina: I really admire how you stepped up recently after the controversy with moderation challenges on fosstodon.org. It was my first instance on the fediverse (joined as @kopfkind in 2018), and it would be gone by now if you had not put in so much effort to clean house and move forward with a new team.

Crissy: We've just met the other day, and through our exchange about online connection, decentralized community-building and seeing that you've founded FediCollective, I can see your energy to make the digital space a welcoming place for minorities and marginalized groups specifically.

Elena: Being a passionate selfhosting person myself, I started following your endeavors a few months ago, also we both run a GoToSocial instance :) I was awe-struck with the time and energy you've put into the fediverse starter video and all the other things you do and did for the community.

You all are beacons of positive energy on the fediverse (some would call it activism), and I believe the world needs more strong people like you. Thank you! <3

@id thx 4 ur kindness. Following and great to connect to @Gina , have been following @_elena since before the awesome and amazing video ☺️

was founded after we had here in Vancouver because IRL people also mentioned wanting community ala Fediverse Club. Today builders and creatives are meeting to discuss ideas and projects for the Open Web ❤️

Just really excited the LGBTQIA2 and BIPOC gaming community want to be involved 🌈

A new version of The Commitment, the "contract with myself" that helps me do one open-source commit per day and has done so for 5 years now, is out! It introduces a new concept of a "ledger repository" that you can send copies of your patches to when you're contributing to an upstream, so that if things don't get pulled they still show up in a single place and can be tracked easily: https://github.com/pojntfx/the-commitment

Always happy to take on other signatories if anyone is interested :)

Crissy ,
@Crissy@tech.lgbt avatar

@pojntfx hello and i just wanna comment on how awesome this is (despite me not being a developer).

Enjoyed reading thru it and appreciate the optional commit days RE: vacation and sick leave!

So well written and healthy for you/devs to implement this. Well-done

Thanks for the LinkedIn connection too Felicitas! ~ hope to see u at a a fediverse club event IRL soon or at least chat sometime :)

As is tradition in the househould, my setup grew by another monitor this week. My record was 7 screens before I last moved, let's hope I can keep myself in check better this time 😅

ALT
Crissy ,
@Crissy@tech.lgbt avatar

@pojntfx yes i wanna ask about that! I thought that maybe that was just a flex that some people can do 5-7 monitors at once.

IDK is it really helpful to go past 3?

This setup is really nice BTW. As a lover of the number 3, i think this is optimal (I'm a designer, not a developer so my bias might be not applicable)

The most I have gone personally is also 3 screens (3rd being an ipad or mobile device for checking UI and basic functionality)

So @pixelfed still hasn't fully acknowledged nor fixed the security vulnerability from earlier this year, despite multiple people asking for updates over the past ~6 months.

Consider this friendly public encouragement to finish the fix and publish the security advisory

Crissy ,
@Crissy@tech.lgbt avatar

@thisismissem hello Emelia. just read this all now and wondering if you recommend leaving pixelfed?

thank u for providing detail as to what the issue is about for this designer to understand what the major concerns are.

I don't know how he treats contributors but also haven't posted anything there for weeks so unsure if I shall keep my account alive knowing this now. Thank you in advance!

Would you also have other recommendations of other pixelfed-like solutions or is it simpler to just post pix directly on one's account here on Fedi from the server I am part of? Thanks again!

“Being gay is like being left-handed—some people are, most people aren’t, and nobody really knows exactly why. It’s not right or wrong; it’s just one of the many natural ways to be. The world works best when everyone gets to live as they truly are. So if you ever feel out of place, remember: you're not broken, you're just beautifully different—and that’s something the world needs.”
