@opensuse There are some problems in kde@lemmy.kde.social icon KDE / @kde land.

PackageKit stops working intermittedly and there seems to be no resiliency built-in. This leaves KDE to slowly spiral into self-harm, doom and gloom until such a time (sometimes days later) it blows up and throws you out.

I've had my workstation log me out on three occasions already. Not ok. Especially not ok if new users are getting this experience, but even old dogs like myself feel intimidated.

The @kde project is doing a somewhat novel (I think?) fundraiser. It's encouraging people to donate by "adopting" apps they find useful and giving donors credit on the app's page on apps.kde.org.

I decided I should chip in for Kid3, the audio tag editor -- I have used Kid3 extensively for years and years. It only seems right to give a little something back.

https://kde.org/fundraisers/yearend2025/

kde ,
@kde@floss.social avatar

@oleksandr @jzb

Donations go to the common KDE pot that is used to benefit all projects and contributors.

But it is worth pointing out that the Adoption Drive serves to shine a light on KDE's apps. KDE is more than just Plasma, Plasma, Plasma.

During the Drive, we get lots of comments from users that say things like: "Oh! I didn't even know such-and-such existed. Just what I needed!". This is useful for everybody.

https://kde.org/fundraisers/yearend2025/#adopt-an-app

kde , (edited )
@kde@floss.social avatar

@oleksandr @jzb

The Adoption Drive is also a great motivator for contributors. The humans who create KDE's app are by and large volunteers. Money is not a motivator for them. Seeing how users appreciate their work is. The Adoption Drive makes users' appreciation explicit.

One take-away of the above for all readers is: if you like your software open and free, don't be shy and thank your friendly neighborhood FLOSS dev now and frequently! Often it is all they need to keep going.

I saw a NeoChat app for Android, but it seems to not be working properly on my device (missing send and attachment buttons, for example). Is it because it's made for a specific open source phone os?
