hi @kde , a very long time ago, I was quite interested in the semantic desktop, you know, things like Strigi

What is the state of this? Can I still do semantic searches on my KDE desktop?

kde , (edited )

@egonw

KRunner will provide you with what you are looking for. It is available by holding down [Alt] and then hitting [Space] or by directly typing with the apps menu open.

KRunner can search for and in files, web browser bookmarks and open tabs; do math (including solve equations); plot functions; define words; show colors given a hex code; convert currencies, temperatures and weights, and a lot more.

We have attached to this post a high res PNG of the Pride logo. Save it on your hard disk.

Right click on your menu launcher and choose "Configure Application Launcher".

Click on the button with the current icon in the dialog that opens. You will be given the option to "Choose..." a new icon.

In the next dialog, click on the "Browse" button in the bottom left hand corner and navigate to where you saved the PNG and select it.

Click "Open" and then "Apply".

Voila!

This petition wants contributing to Free Software to be legally and officially recognized as volunteering in Germany on the same level as youth work or ambulance service:

This would bring fiscal and funding advantages for FLOSS organizations and the volunteers themselves.

When big tech does “maybe later” instead of “never” it’s Evil™. When KDE does it’s “it helps us get the money!” That’s exactly the same reason big tech does it, though 🤷

kde ,
@kde@floss.social avatar

@tennoseremel

Except Big Tech does it to pay bonuses to its managers and increase the value of its shareholders' stocks, without actually improving its products or paying better salaries to its workers. Often quite the contrary.

Meanwhile, KDE e.V., a non-profit run by volunters, re-invests ALL the donations into making better software, protecting users rights and privacy, and helping its contributors.

@spitfire@mastodon.de avatar spitfire , to random

@kde Although I totally understand the need for finacial support (donated today btw) please consider NOT doing this in form of an unsolicited notification. This is exactly one of the the main reasons why I went away from because stuff like that really, really upsets me.

@a_blahaj @spitfire @kemona_halftau

That's okay. We ask for donations, not demand payment.

We are perfectly aware that many of our users cannot afford proprietary software, so we try to make you the best free software we can.

To those that can afford donations: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

To those that can't: thank you, thank you, thank you for trusting KDE's software to better your life.

@nazokiyoubinbou@urusai.social avatar nazokiyoubinbou , to random

Hey @kde I want you to get all the donations you need to keep going and then some, but having popups on our desktops that effectively amount to ads is a gigantic no-no that could push people away for good instead. This was not a good idea and I STRONGLY urge you to remove this "feature" ASAP.

Yes even only once a year is still too often. No ads/etc should ever be a popup within the DE itself. That is never an acceptable practice. I think you underestimate people's well earned hatred of popups and ads. I assure you, they make us MAD.

ALT
kde ,
@kde@floss.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou

We appreciate your opinion, but the fact is users who donated through the donation pop-up have helped fund employee salaries, travel for contributors, infrastructure for our online services, and many more things throughout 2025.

Most people don't mind it. Most people use it. If we didn't have the pop-up our activities and independence would be severely hindered.

kde ,
@kde@floss.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou

Either way, you already found the checkbox that allows you to de-activate this notification forever. If a minuscule pop-up that appears once a year and that can be dismissed with a click is so upsetting for you, please use it.
