Cataract update:

I haven’t posted in a bit because things are in limbo. I’ve had multiple referrals fall through due to insurance and facility coverage issues, so for now I’m waiting on the next referral and don’t have a surgery date yet.

The procedure itself isn’t what worries me. The primary stress is the financial side, with a minimum of about $2,000 out of pocket on top of regular bills.

I know many people are dealing with far more urgent needs, so please know this: spreading the word or simply commiserating is more than enough. If you are able to help, support links are in my Linktree.

Another cataract update:

I had my follow-up with the retina specialist and got the all clear. That was one worry off my plate, so join me in a sigh of relief!

Next week, I see the doctor to discuss timing and details of the surgery. I'm not excited about it, but not dreading it either. Lots of family have been through this, so I know more or less what to expect.

The main source of anxiety remains the same: my $2K out-of-pocket...

Update on my cataracts:

I have a follow-up with a retina specialist next week, and later this month I’ll have my surgery consult, where we’ll discuss the procedure, options, and costs. I’m not worried about the surgery itself; what’s really weighing on me is the minimum out-of-pocket cost of $2,000.

Since it's Halloween, my one and only actual "I saw a ghost" story.

When I was seven years old my Mom's brother and their mother died in March and November. There were several other family deaths near in time but those were the two nearest and dearest.

Sometime the following year we were visiting my uncle's widow and their only child who was about my age. Mom and my aunt were in the living room chatting and my Dad and cousin were in the den watching TV. I kept flitting back and forth between them when I encountered a stranger just standing in the hallway. He turned and looked at me but never said a word and never moved towards me but I was completely freaked out and ran to the den where Dad was.

Of all the ways I could have taken after my father, cataracts in my early 50s would not have been my first choice at all.

It's VERY hard for me to ask for help and just getting a drive to get checked combined with my general anxiety resulted in putting it off so long that both cataracts are ready, well, past ready, for surgery.

On a similar "hate to ask" point, I've got a coinsurance out of pocket looming. If you want to defray those costs, a print or a digital download from my Etsy would be a great form of support. Or you can message me for other options.
