We need more 10Gbps or higher dedicated servers for hosting our OS and app updates. We have North America covered well enough via sponsored servers from ReliableSite in both Miami and Los Angeles and a sponsored server from Xenyth in Toronto but no longer have any left in Europe.
NextCloud on Hetzner is the OneDrive upgrade I didn’t know I wanted
For years, I relied on Microsoft’s OneDrive — not for the Office 365 suite, but for its 1TB of cloud storage. It served me well for offsite backups and seamless syncing between my computers and phone. I even used the Personal Vault feature, though more out of curiosity than necessity. Later, I joined a friend’s family plan, making it even more cost-effective.
I'm running my own #Kubernetes cluster on bare metal at #Hetzner. I'm going through different iterations of node configurations, and trying to figure out how to squeeze the most out of a hardware configuration with a 10TB+ HDD drive and two 512GB #NVME drives. #bcache has apparently been discontinued, which leaves me with #dmcache, which is nicely built into #LVM.
One catch though: you need to create NVME cache volumes for each of the data volumes you create. This is all well and good if you're using a single volume for everything, and tools like #Longhorn work well in this kind of setup. Others, like the #OpenEBS LVM provisioner don't. There is a version in the making that just provisions raw disk images as files on whatever filesystem you have, but it's still lacking some features that are vital to me - primarily the ability to offer up StorageClasses that provision on different paths of the node, so I can pick a fast or slow filesystem to store it on.
Any thoughts on #ZFS as the filesystem for a #Kubernetes node? My very unscientific initial sandbox impression is that it really squeezes the maximum performance out of the #Hetzner auction servers, which usually features a lot of slow rotating storage with a couple of #NVMe sticks thrown in to sweeten the deal. When the latter are used for caching, the throughput seems almost bearable. I'll do some more practical testing over the next weeks, but I'm quite optimistic. Maybe this will solve the disk saturation issues we're seeing, without breaking the budget.
This took me only some minutes to have a running VPN for my mobile devices and laptops for everyone in the family.
Important: to reach my VPN at home a #portforwarding from ISP router to my homelab linux server is needed.
WireGuard does authenticate devices - not users! So you need a config for each devices!
First you need a wireguard server "outside" to tunnel your traffic to. I have WG on some cloud servers at german datacenter provider #Hetzner , so I can start/stop a VPN easy like this:
wg-quick "$1" ~/dev/wg/hetzner-"$2".conf
with first argument = down/up
and second argument = shortname for my VPN server = location at #hetznercloud
I think it was when I replaced my router with a new #BananapiR3 but my #openwrt v24 router has lost its #ipv6 connectivity from #Jazztel #fibre and I can't figure out why. - I have vague memories of something blocking it in the past (or did it just work when I connected it - I can't remember) but its annoying me now I have ...
We got a little bit of an issue.. Currently the main server for mstdn.social has just under 48GB disk space left and we cannot upgrade any further since we're at the highest tier
So the only solution would be a dedicated server with a lot more space to grow, within exactly 14 days bills will arrive for all our current servers but I also gotta rent and setup a new server in the meanwhile
Besides that me and my gf are alsomoving soon maybe so i cannot spend all our money on server bills 😩

Screenshot on mobile (detail) of Hetzner web site showing supporter OS Images for rapid deployment. The two visible are Ubuntu (with 24.04 selected in a drop down) and Fedora (with 41 selected).
Happy to see Fedora has implemented CoreOS support for Hetzner. Guess the ball’s in Hetzner’s court now: would be great to see it as one of the natively-supported operating systems with rapid deploy (under 10 seconds deployment).
Oh #PeerTube, you are making me do mental somersaults as I strategize about the best way to self-host my videos.
This newbie wants to ask: how many VPS’s are too many for someone who has little coding experience and has been self-hosting for just 3 months?
Fedi friends, I’m thinking of signing up for a THIRD VPS 😱
Why?
My current setup:
1️⃣ 5€/month Debian VPS with #YunoHost, where I’m self-hosting #GoToSocial (this account), #Friendica, #Pixelfed, #Fail2Ban and #LinkStack.
2️⃣ 5€/month Ubuntu VPS where I am self-hosting my (upcoming) #Ghost blog (this will make me save a ton, compared to my current Ghost Pro plan).
Back to PeerTube: I could easily upgrade my #Debian VPS and install it there - the costs would be minimal and I would double my RAM and storage. But I am afraid of PeerTube’s consumption when it comes to bandwidth. As in: if I upload a video that for some reason becomes really popular, or if a bad actor decides to DDOS my channel, would that take down all my other self-hosted Fediverse instances? Since they are on the same VPS?
I could limit potential issues by having a dedicated VPS just for PeerTube.
What would you do?
And do you have recommendations for Europe-based VPS’s with affordable plans? (aside from Hostinger) I was thinking of #Hetzner… #MySoCalledSudoLife#AskFedi
Watching the latest
@thelinuxEXP show and the first segment is about #Mesa, #Wayland and #Xorg losing their hosting. My naive self thought, perhaps I could sponsor some hosting for them at #Hetzner or something, then came the price and bandwidth they use ..
Then I remembered that there is clearly a difference between hosting and hosting..
Who else is running #Pixelfed with #Hetzner? My instance has a pretty mediocre performance, and I don’t want to throw more computing power onto it if I may have just poorly configured it. What settings did you need to change for a single user instance?
Today I convinced my mom's boyfriend to use #Hetzner Storage Share (#Nextcloud) instead of just paying Google for cloud storage. 1TB for €5 compared to 100GB for €3 and it has so many more apps and features.
If only Hetzner's sign up and setup was less enterpricy.
Anyone else having issues with the #Hetzner console?

If your server is slow and glitchy, you're not alone, this seems to be affecting a lot of servers at the moment.
A major internet infrastructure provider called OVH is apparently having technical difficulties. Servers and hosting companies which use that particular provider may be affected by this.
Please don't blame your admin, it's not their fault 🙂
Hey everyone, out of curiosity, how much do you spend on a #Linux, #FreeBSD, (or Windows) cloud instance for your side project? Also, please state the provider.
@nixCraft $110 or so to #Hetzner of 2x physical boxes + 1x storage box, $35 or so to #Linode for a few VPS machines, I use #FreeDNS over at #1984.is to host my domains, then there might be small subscriptions here and there to test things like #CoPilot, #ChatGPT and other such things from time to time but not constantly
