Super grateful for the investment and involvement that Microsoft has made in open source, and in the Fedora Project specifically. They're joining the project just as other contributors would and becoming part of our community!

Some of their impact so far:

  • Modernizing Fedora Cloud image delivery
  • Enabling Secure Boot on ARM
  • Improving Fedora compatibility with Azure
  • Fedora on WSL

There's even talk of having Azure Linux treat Fedora more like an upstream!

Vojtux - Accessible Linux distro which is almost pure Fedora

Vojtěch Polášek has put together a technical preview of a version of Fedora that should work well for blind or visually impaired users. While his goal is explicitly to see these improvements and changes become part of Fedora itself, for now you can use this implementation based on the Fedora MATE spin. :)

Is it cool that Linus Torvalds uses Fedora Linux? Yes!

But the really cool thing is to use the Linux distro that works best for you. :)

Having Linux get covered on LTT is such a big win for the open source community as more techies realize there is another way!

But it is pretty neat tho what Linus uses 😎

@madomado in what way? There are many contributors who do use their real names, but I don't think it's necessary.

Maybe depending on what you're looking to do that may require more trust from the community, but that is different from having to use your name.

So last night, I tried Fedora 43. Fedora-Workstation-Live-43-1.6.x86_64.iso. The installer is now web based, making it really nice to use, even with just Tab and Shift + Tab. I was able to install it with no problem.

Now, first time setup had just one big issue, the timezone selector. It's keyboard accessible, and works like this: you start typing a city name, like Chicago, and then down arrow through suggestions and press Enter on the one you want. But Orca doesn't speak that there are suggestions available, and does not read which suggestion you select until you press Enter.

Other than that, Gnome desktop looks pretty good these days! The settings are much better, and that's about all I had time to test so far. Orca starts if you hit Alt Windows S at the installer and first setup, then starts after first setup is complete. The overview panel where you type to search doesn't read when it opens, but basically you just hit the Windows key and start typing what you want, and Orca reads what you hand on, and you can arrow through results. Notifications read too, and I'm thankful Gnome supports notifications.

@fedora

@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@pixelate we're glad that first impressions of Fedora Workstation 43 have been good! If you notice any issues, especially around accessibility, please let us know.

fedora ,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@GamingWithEars @pixelate our understanding is that Fedora MATE is the best spin to go with if you are blind or visually impaired, but hopefully that can change some soon as things improve with Wayland and overall accessibility.

Under the hood quiet progress to keep your machine secure:

"Fedora Linux 43 will be the first release with RPM 6.0. Like I said, this should go unnoticed to end-users, but it is a significant change. RPM 6.0 provides some interesting security enhancements, like multiple key signing of packages. This should help future-proof package signing as we transition to post-quantum-crypto OpenPGP keys in future releases."

My 10yo was using Google Slides last night but wouldn’t let me see what he was doing. Suspicious, no? Especially with an autistic kid, but I let him have his space and didn’t bother him.

fedora ,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@edlinks @trinux @sobrelamarcha si, los variantes que no son ediciones no se recomienden al mismo nivel que ediciones, pero si pensamos que son buenos para mucha gente.

Fedora Linux 43 is here! What do you get with this update?

  • New Anaconda WebUI installer on all desktop editions and spins
  • @gnome 49 and being Wayland only
  • Fedora CoreOS now based on bootc instead of rpm-ostree
  • Under the hood changes like RPM 6.0
  • All your favorite versions of Fedora getting up to date!

Happy upgrading!

What's new in Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop 43?

  • Latest updates from @kde Plasma 6.4.5 with improvements in tiling, color management, accessibility, and more!

"Where's @kde Plasma 6.5?"

Fedora Workstation 43 brings a few niceties like @gnome 49 and a new video player, but also an important change.

With this release, Fedora Workstation will be Wayland only as we finalize the migration to the new display server. It's been a long road getting to this point, but the day has come. Excited to continue to make progress in this space!

  • All desktop environments on latest major release!

We have editions and spins that are great general purpose starting points. You install Fedora, then grab whatever else you need and start using your computer.

But what if you just want to start working immediately? We have Fedora Labs for that! These are offerings with specific use cases in mind, like astronomy or design.

Our question: have you tried these before, and if so what has been your experience?
https://fedoraproject.org/labs

fedora OP ,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@levi you should definitely wait for the stable release of COSMIC if you are looking for an experience similar to our other spins, but it should be in a good place to mess around with. And feedback is appreciated!
