High gas prices are responsible for two-thirds of the rise in household electricity bills since before the global energy crisis, says the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).

The new analysis, from one of the UK’s foremost research bodies on energy, flatly contradicts widespread media and political narratives that misleadingly seek to blame climate policies for high bills.

The EU agrees on a complete ban of Russian gas imports by 2027.

Ministers from the 27 EU member states on Monday gave their final approval to a regulation that will see all Russian gas imports banned by late 2027, a vote that allows the measure to pass into law.

The agreement is in line with the EU's pledge to cut ties with its former main gas supplier amid security fears.

But not all countries voted in favour of the ban.

"The government subsidies are simply huge: a nuclear tax is being levied on hard pressed consumers. What is the government thinking of? The fossil fuel industry, which has thrown its weight behind nuclear power, is of course delighted; all these decades of new construction without any electricity to show for it gives at least another decade or two of unabated burning gas"
Paul Brown on his life as an environment writer.
