A bouquet of flowers rests on top of a gravestone in memorial of a pioneer of the area in an old cemetery, with other gravestones in the background on a bright sunny day in Muskoka, Ontario.
on the downside i'm sick at home w/ a chest infection but on the plus side my friend sent me a bunch of photos he took years ago at the Progressive Musical Benevolent Society section at Mount Hebron Cemetery. I was bugging him with questions about the Prog. Mus. Ben. Soc. lol.
photo looking over the shoulder of a longhaired person in a baseball cap who is himself taking a photo with a camera. the view is looking across a road at a gated cemetery section. at the top of the gate is a harp logo and the words PROG. MUSICAL BEN. ASS'N.
I've never been, but I guess this photo of the gate is of the P.M.B.S.'s second cemetery site at Beth Israel in Woodbridge, NJ. Like many NY Jewish mutual aid societies, they bought a second plot as their first one started to fill up.
Even just looking closely at the gates tells me some things.🥸these are photos from before high resolution digital smartphone photos sadly, but in some of the closer shots you can read some of the names who donated to put up the column in 1939.
A badger, otter, red fox, and chipmunk are sitting in the middle of a graveyard under a half moon and starry sky. They listen as the badger tells spooky stories.

A black and white landscape photo of a graveyard. The treeless graveyard and numerous headstones and crosses sit on a grassy rounded hilltop. There are numerous puffy clouds in the sky.

Graveyard with Cat in Moonlight, in celebration of Halloween.
Sketching new,old and abandoned graves, some pristine, some neglected . A cat ran ahead of me, then stood on top of a flat gravestone, outlined in light, casting a dark shadow.
My interpretation is of this scene at night, with a full moon.

Photo of a headstone in a cemetery. Just a close view of the word ‘year’ carved into the stone. Partly covering the word is a perfectly circular orange and white moss. (It’s a moss right? Not a lichen???) anyway there are a couple white and orange circles on the stone. Despite death, there is life.
This was the first cemetery photo I ever took - Stanley Cemetery, Tasmania. Three weathered crosses, standing watch over the sea, quietly invited me into a world of memory, history, and stillness. That moment became the beginning of Gardens of the Silent.
Here, I share images from cemeteries across Australia - spaces where time softens, stories linger, and beauty often hides in plain sight. Each photo is a gesture of respect, a glimpse into lives once lived, and a reminder that silence can speak volumes.
Whether you're drawn to heritage, reflection, or the quiet poetry of stone and shadow, I hope this page offers you a place to pause, feel, and connect.
