A nice run-down of open-source tools for designers, via
@piccalilli.
"[...] the first few months of planning the course revolved around breaking out of the Figma ecosystem and putting as many free and open source tools to the test as we could. Now, the fact this article exists shows that we succeeded on that front, but what I honestly didn’t expect was that the experience would be so good (and honestly quite liberating) that I’d actually be switching my whole design setup to free and open source tools."
I'm Cam R. (my preferred name) and this is my PERSONAL #Mastodon account. I also identify as :neobread_flag_aro: :prami_pride_ace: :prami_pride_genderqueer: (and demigirl, can't find the custom emoji for that on my instance) with she/her pronouns. I'm sticking to Mastodon from now on since I have had mostly bad experiences with other social media platforms, the latest being Bluesky and Pinterest. By the way, this account is, and has, NOT been bridged to Bluesky since the beginning of October. I am also no longer on Bluesky (for obvious reasons). #NoBridge
I just like #art, #music, #HerbalMedicine, #WebDesign, #FrontEnd#WebDev (as a thing I like to do and learn for myself), #academic#nonfiction, #hiking#trails, #food, and #psychology / #psychiatry / #neurology (despite the fact that I don't have a college degree in any of those things. I just happen to like reading about them more than doing the actual work I guess. I won't claim to be an expert on anything I don't know well). I can't afford to take care of pets or anything else at the moment. I also may have some off days, and I cannot control those who may block/mute me as a result of my actions. This does not excuse my actions, however, and I'm committed to working on myself to be a better person.
I do actually use :linux: but mostly through live USB environments rather than installed, because some Windows applications do not work well with WINE (I use https://privacy.sexy to remove unwanted features that Windows 11 imposes, so everything's okay for now)

Aergh, why do people put infinite scroll pages on websites where all the "About" links are at the bottom of the page? 😱
It's like the curse of Tantalus, the minute you get near the bottom another row of posts appear and drive it away. You're never able to reach the bottom.
I have more than one hobby, prefer trying multiple careers and interests to see which one I'm comfortable with instead of settling for the one I think will be the most stable, and am generally accepting and tolerant of everyone as long as they are not too insensitive, prone to perceiving slights readily beyond what is reasonable, or malicious.

I have a tendency to sound direct and blunt to the point where people think I'm insulting them, but honestly, I used to be so much worse back then. I've changed for the better now, and am open to advice on self-improvement regarding my actions. If I have said anything that has resulted in your offense and willingness to block/mute me, know that my intent is never to hurt or mess with anyone and that I was probably having an off day.
I add #ContentWarnings to any sensitive posts, including those that contain profanity and innuendos. Please do the same when replying to me. I see too many images with or without alt text that contain explicit language because the language in question is not present in the alt text, resulting in said language being shown anyway, and not allowing my filters to catch those posts. I rely on filters to hide sensitive posts. Please do not engage with me if you resist and dislike the idea of being considerate of and accommodating my sensitivities. We all have our own sensitivities to some extent, otherwise we wouldn't be muting/blocking people for not being mindful of them.
I originally did want to become a welder and even got a Welding Technology associate's degree, but for health reasons (compression neuropathy, neuralgia) and realizing up until now that I have an actual genuine fear/repulsion of loud car horns specifically (although the sounds made while welding doesn't upset me as much) combined with a heightened sensitivity to sound in general (the other four senses seem to be left intact) and the fact that a driver's license is required for most trades careers, people mostly ignoring me in school except my professors, etc., I actually grew to no longer want to become a professional welder. I am not officially diagnosed with any health condition as of this time of writing because most doctors misunderstand me.
I do not have an interest in IT/programming as a career/service at this time.
I do sometimes use :fedora: #Fedora or other :linux: #Linux operating systems in a live environment on a bootable USB drive. However some of the software I use requires Windows 11, so I'm stuck with Windows (but I use https://privacy.sexy so it should be fine for now). I would preferably want one desktop computer with Windows and one laptop with any Linux OS I prefer, if I could afford it.
I am aware of current events and the world going on around me even if I don't talk about it.
My interests:
✔️ All styles of #art, although I gravitate towards #ContemporaryArt and modern #DigitalArt. For the record, I like nonrepresentational art better than other types of art now. I used to be into various cartoon styles. I do like photography but I tend to find a lot of it to be overly repetitive depending on the subject.
✔️ All kinds of #music, as long as it's appealing to me and regardless of whether it's mainstream or not. Preferably instrumental, with consistent volumes, with varying levels of experimentation and variety.
✔️ Clinical and abnormal #psychology (NOT pop psychology)
✔️ #HerbalRemedies
✔️ #WebDesign (I've gotten into it more recently) (as a hobby, not a career or service)
✔️ Mostly #academic#nonfiction regarding psychology, languages, music, etc.
✔️ #Walking and #hiking through trails (though in the city I can't do much of that)
✔️ Going to various international supermarkets/convenience stores to try foreign #food and #cuisine (which I don't do as often anymore due to budget constraints)
At some point I will update other things of mine to the latest version.

I'm lost on how long an alt-text should be. Like, the WAVE tool keeps telling me they are too long when I write "Close up of a table with coffee cups, water bottles and Coffee cans". I can't really shorten that? Here I see people write entire novels on alt text...I read a guide on alt-text that also says to make them more precise.
What do the visually impaired/blind people actually prefer?
By the way, if your website only uses minimal styling, or no styles at all, consider setting
<meta name="color-scheme" content="light dark" />
in the <head>. This allows browsers to also use their default dark mode styles on your page, without you having to do anything. If you don't, it'll always be light mode.
For example, these screenshots show this minimal document and how it will be rendered when the browser is set to light or dark mode.
The rendered document, showing a white "Hello world!" on an almost black background in a serif font. The button below it is almost black too and has the white text "This rocks!"
