I'm starting a list of initiatives that aim to move people from capitalist social media and to the Fediverse.

Help me add the ones I forgot.

FediPact is now, unambiguously, an antifascist struggle.

To be sure, it's not the most most important front; not when we see, for example, the bureaucratic precursors to literal trans genocide. But it's not unimportant either.

There's been a lot of talk around here about the fediverse being a holdout and refuge in an age of fascist capture of capitalist social media. That can and should be true - but is actually not, so long as the Zuckerberg entity continues to be provided the power to manipulate the future of ActivityPub.

Don't assume that the current status quo will hold or that the threat is waning. Don't assume that Meta will not advance its fediverse integration beyond the current, bizarrely stunted joke of a bridge. Don't forget that they always unilaterally force the next step on us as a sudden surprise with no advance warning.

ophiocephalic OP ,
@ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social avatar

There is now a notable influx into the fedi of folks trying to escape the Meta networks, both occurring organically and due to the Pixelfed boom and efforts like (and not at all, btw, because of the Threads bridge). But does this network really offer them that refuge?

Meta's own terms indicate that they are ingesting the profile data of every account behind every toot that crosses the bridge. That means that new users may be showing up here from FB or IG, setting up profiles with details that match those of their old Meta accounts, then replying to Threads posts unaware that they are still being surveilled by Meta, and that their presence and activities here could be compiled into their identity dossiers back there. The fedi is already serving as a surveillance vector.

Meta was always an abhorrent monstrosity; but with the recent turn, it has now directly telegraphed itself as a Trumpist organ. It is an explicitly fascist entity colluding with a fascist regime. And anyone who is collaborating with Meta in the fedi and enabling their ability to exercise power here needs also to be understood accordingly.

If you’re reading this, you’ve already taken the right step and joined the Fediverse. But have your friends and family done the same?

On this Global Switch Day, invite people in your circles to leave social media platforms under Big Tech’s control behind and help them get settled in on decentralized, algorithm and ad free services instead.

And why not make their first home Vivaldi Social? We welcome everyone! :tony_wee:

I won't switch today: looking after my mom, dealing with lots of bureaucracy and challenges after my father's passing - no spare time.

Been on Facebook since 2009, living away from my birth place, so FB is how we keep in touch. Besides, as a self-employed artist who mostly depends on sales, there's been a LOT of work put on my FB/Instagram work pages. A real bummer!

On Mastodon since Twitter was brought by Musky. Gradually, I'll do the whole switch

✅ EASY STEPS

Browser → firefox@lemmy.world icon Firefox @torproject
(10 minutes for FF, then learn about Tor)

Google → @duckduckgo @StartpageSearch
(1 minute and you're free)

WhatsApp → @signalapp
(Start with family, then scale)

Gmail → @protonprivacy @Tutanota @posteo_en
(Start with the free plan, a full switch could take months, planning and a paid account, but it's worth)

Maps → @openstreetmap
(Maps work, but you have hundreds of less metadata for itineraries and shops-bars)

X → @Mastodon
(I supposed you already know that)

Don't procrastinate, reown your data and privacy.

I wish Boost understood the collapsible spoilers.

On my client, it’s all expanded and I see all the formatting characters.

Ah dang, that's good to know (though I'm not sure what to do as an alternative) — I was unaware that the collapsible spoilers weren't supported on Boost. I guess that means that Lemmy's markdown formatting hasn't entirely been standardized across the service. I personally have encountered some inconsistency on the Tesseract UI with CommonMark Autolink ^[2]^ formatting where the autolinks don't even render ^[1]^.

I recommend reporting this to the Boost devs to improve Markdown feature compatibility between them and the Lemmy UI.
