@signalapp Signal IMO has bad security because when someone decides they are not interested in an overpriced, underperforming service of "phone number" and stops using their SIM, they cannot deregister the number from Signal and the new owner of the number either can hijack their Signal account, or people may be blocked from using newly purchased SIMs with Signal.
Also, authoritarian regimes IMO can temporarily transfer a number into a provider's internal SIM in order to hijack a Signal account and impersonate a dissident against another dissident, facilitating abduction, torture and murder.
I stopped using Signal because I just don't trust it. Why so many updates with no explanations? Is it so unstable and insecure that it needs them? Also, check out search results for running your own Signal server. Technically it's free software, but practically, good luck.
So I guess I need to figure out persistence and E2EE for XMPP, and land on a server and clients. I'm inclined towards ejabberd, because Erlang!

The only relevant feature for any instant messaging app (or social app, for that matter) is: Are my friends using it? People will gladly overlook minor inconsistencies or missing features as long as they can communicate with their friends. We shouldn’t recommend #Signal as a stepping stone before Jabber/XMPP becomes "good enough," if goodness is defined by the number of people using it.
Over the last year, I've wondered how to reduce my dependency on US tech giants. Especially for mobile phones, this is quite difficult - you either go for a de-googled system such as #GrapheneOS (but might end up having to buy that device from Google) or you accept some compromises (regarding the quality of the device or functions of the OS).
I've finally decided that perfect is the enemy of good and bought a #fairphone5 on which I installed #ubuntutouch. While a number of things are still missing (#Signal -
@signalapp and banking apps, for instance), a lot of the stuff that I do on a daily basis already works (phone calls, text messages, emails, calendar, podcasts, photos, web browsing, Mastodon, and Matrix, for instance). Yes, I had to change my habits a bit, and I do still depend on a secondary device for some Apps, but overall, I'm quite happy. I am confident that in the not so distant future, #ubuntutouch and #postmarketos will become viable alternatives to #iOS and #android
And I haven't enjoyed playing with an electronic device that much in a long time.
