Ok.
SO.
If you want chat history on a given client (device) for where is used, you WILL have backups for that device.

() saves that to the device.
SO, if you don't do "something" do get that backup to a "off device" location, if your device is stolen/destroyed, you will not have chat history.
At least it can be scheduled.

(Desktop) does not seem to allow scheduling. But you CAN export chats.
Same caveat applies re theft/destruction

There's a reason I've been recommending folks reliant on to familiarise themselves with (or if you like).

Signal relies on one of the companies they aim to protect us from: amazon. If amazon goes down, so to does Signal.

Is that bad? Yes. Yes it is. It is very bad. You just had the faintest hint of a whiff of what that means today.

Jabber, on the other hand, is a decentralised service that has been in continuous use and development since the 90s.

With my jabber server () and my client (), my friends and family and I do everything we can do on Signal - text, quote reply, search, send media and files, voice and video chat... and it's all end-to-end-encrypted, running on hardware and software we have total control over.

Go explore the world of options with Jabber!

I really shouldn't be astonished, but I am 😵.

This is, of course, utter abuse of user data, but what's even worse is that Google allows this.

was taken off Google Play, and forced to remove its contacts linking feature for reasons, despite the fact that no contact data was ever uploaded to any servers, yet is allowed to share highly sensitive precise location data with third parties for the sake of ?!

🤬 Goodbye Citymapper!!

Thankfully we're not exactly short of alternatives: I love how displays the timetables, but we also have and KDE's (which not only works on Android but also on ).

@dansup I've been slowly converting family and friends over to Signal for years now. Here's how usually I do that these days. When a conversation gets into some rather intimate topic - say talk on emotions, or psychology, or other highly private details - then I set a boundary, saying "I'd be willing to discuss this topic further, but only in a more private app like Signal." So I leave them an "out": I'm willing to stay on, say, WhatsApp, but the conversation has to stay more shallow.

I also run an server (Prosody), but I've had very limited success in getting people to join. Frankly, XMPP is only for intrepid geeks at this time, who are willing to put up with several papercuts in usability. Apps like WhatsApp and Signal have "raised the bar" a lot, and apps like and have their work cut out for them to try to catch up to people's sky-high expectations - they've been spoiled.

A ton more testing and bug-fixing is still needed to iron out quirks that the different XMPP clients have, in talking to each other.

Spot and discard!

  1. identify distractions (news, entertainement, debates, values, campaigns, renewables, transition)
  2. identify the issues that require addressing (nationalism, sexual violence, extractivism, degrowth, activism)
  3. urgently avoid fueling distractions
  4. do not acquiesce on people fueling distractions.

William Hirst says that a that leaves out information “induces forgetting of the unmentioned material.”

about other parts of the story actively leads people to forget what is not discussed. “We seem to have a brain that is designed to build a collective memory around collective remembering and collective forgetting,” he explains. “Why? It’s adaptive. We’re social creatures oriented toward our in-group and away from out-groups. Memory is designed to reinforce our in-group membership.”
