INNOVATION is hard-wired into America’s DNA. Over the last two and a half centuries, millions of men and women built the world’s most dynamic economy by constantly moving forward, trying new things and never settling for second best. To kick off our yearlong series of special reports celebrating America’s 250th birthday, we present the most innovative among them. These aren’t just inventors, they’re the captains of industry who created the technology, culture and the business models that shape our present.
To identify the top 250 historic innovators (the 250 greatest living ones are available here), we first tapped the expertise of Forbes’ beat reporters, who nominated hundreds of candidates. We then consulted with the National Inventors Hall of Fame to review names and provide us with new ideas. We used artificial intelligence, in the form of ChatGPT and Gemini, to assist in assessing their legacy. Forbes editors determined the final ranking, based on creativity, breadth, engagement, disruption and commercial impact.
Every person here is an American citizen, though many weren’t born that way. Many others weren’t considered equal at the time. More than a quarter of this list consists of women and people of color, who had to break barriers of racism and sexism, overcoming legal and social barriers—not to mention a lack of capital—to achieve greatness.
