When I moved into my apartment in 2008, the previous owner had left a mezuzah on the doorway. Initially, as I’m not religious, I planned to take it down. Somehow I never got around to it. Now I never will. Jew haters can kiss my tuchus.

“To recoup their existing and announced investments, AI companies will have to bring in $2 trillion, more than the combined revenue of Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia and Meta.

“And they have to bring in that $2 trillion before all those GPUs burn out…which is, again, about 2–3 years.

“Or sometimes just 54 days.”

@zeldman

Please consider this scary thought: chatGPT has not yet started the enshittification pivot. That is yet to come. It is, for now, free of ads, free of clutter, and free of (obvious) manipulation.

But of course that must change as they move into the "more profitable" part of their growth cycle.

What will advertising look like in that environment. One that is already too manipulative? One that is already playing fast and loose with the truth.

shudder with me at what is to come

@futurebird @zeldman how do we know there isn't some advertising already? The replies could already be biased towards an advertiser. Done in a subtle fashion it would be hard to detect!

“Wherever they’s a fight so hungry people can eat, I’ll be there. Wherever they’s a cop beatin’ up a guy, I’ll be there. I’ll be in the way kids laugh when they’re hungry an’ they know supper’s ready. An’ when our folks eat the stuff they raise an’ live in the houses they build–why, I’ll be there.”

@zeldman I don't even know how many hours I spent in ResEdit. I honestly thought of it as an image editor first and foremost, although that was a pretty small part of its overall function.

The icon designer I remember is Hide Itoh: https://www.iconarchive.com/artist/pixture.html Hide was an absolute master of 32x32 icons. He could pull off curves and irregular shapes like almost no one else I've seen.

No idea what happened to him. As far as I can tell, he doesn't have a presence online.

Study: When experienced open-source developers used current AI tools, work took 19% longer to complete. In spite of which, the developers thought they were working faster.

It’s just one study, and they don’t claim anything beyond what they observed. Their results are not predictive. Still....

After 9/11, I stopped living in a rented NYC apartment ... and bought one.

If you’re frightened by the prospect of a mayor who cares about all New Yorkers—not just the donor class—by all means, leave town.

It will help lower the cost of living for the rest of us.
