I'm sure no one in this community needs to be convinced to try Linux. But I love it every time I see a non-Linux person trying Linux and showing other people that it works. (Also nice to see that Jeff Gerstmann is still around and doing alright after getting screwed over by Gamespot for like 15 years.)
I don't think it's as good as it used to be. It got acquired by Gamespot, then Gamespot was acquired by a few different private equity firms, so of course there were layoffs across all of their sites, and Gerstmann was one of them.
Hopefully this is intended to generate interest in a new Rayman game! Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends were some of the best 2D platformers in recent years. Hell, some of the best ever, in my opinion.
This 30th anniversary edition looks like it's basically the same thing as Rayman Forever, which is currently $1.50 on GOG. It's usually $6. https://www.gog.com/en/game/rayman_forever
This new edition says it includes versions from 5 different consoles (missing the Saturn version though, which was a really good version), plus a "making of" video. So unless you care about seeing the differences on those consoles, I'm not sure if this new one is worth $20.
The MS-DOS version of Rayman was the best one. All of the console versions had to cut various things from it. Lower resolution sprites, removing layers from the soundtrack, etc. The Sega Saturn was probably the closest to the MS-DOS version, and that one isn't included in this edition.
I'm not really sure if this new $20 edition is worth it. You can get the MS-DOS version, plus the bonus levels mentioned in the blog post, for $1.50 right now. https://www.gog.com/en/game/rayman_forever
Two parts. First one above has the ceo of Microsoft doing a presentation about their new AI tool with the explanation text: microslop presentation be like
Second part below, Victoria Fisher with a huge kde necklace doing a presentation about kwin wayland compositor
I'll always watch a presentation from a purple-haired cyberpunk over some bizbro with an array of asshole-shaped logos behind him.
(Actually, her presentation about using Qt in a car UI went way over my head, so I only watched a few minutes of it. But I'm watching exactly zero minutes of anything Nadella says nowadays.)
I use it for my music server and have enjoyed it, but I haven't really used it in a "fediverse" kind of way. I'm just using it for my own music collection, for the same use case that most people would use Navidrome for.
I disabled federation after I first set it up, because all of the sudden a bunch of podcasts showed up in languages that I don't speak, and I couldn't figure out how to hide them.
It has been just fine as a plain old music server, though. I used it for podcasts for a while, too, but am currently switching to Pinepods, since that has more podcast-specific features that I was looking for.
I chose Piefed over Lemmy since I thought the UI looked nicer. The pace of development has been really impressive lately, and for my specific instance, I've been very happy with feddit.online.
Mastodon seems like the default answer for this question, and I do also like Mastodon. I self-host that one.
I might check this one out. I hadn't heard of Moon Knight before I saw the TV show a while ago, but I loved the character. Maybe this is a good time to hop on board with the comics.
This is the 10th anniversary edition, which is very well done. It has the album itself, plus two additional records with live performances which include some songs from their other albums. ...
Absolute Batman #15 for me. And #16, if they still have one in the store. I bought volumes 1 and 2 last week (which go up to issue #14) and loved this new universe, so I decided to start reading the regular issues.

Conservation of energy means that if one person replaces a battery, another battery somewhere else must lose charge. Pretty sure that's how it works, no I am not looking for additional sources thankyou.
Given your update: I had the same thing happen. Apparently, buying a 30 pack of 9V batteries ten years ago because "I'll need them eventually" was not a great idea. Because you just end up with 26 batteries that have 2% of their juice left.
I didn't waste any, though. Used all of them up. Just had to change a lot of smoke alarm batteries for a while.

It seems like a weird point to bring up. How often do y'all convert your measurements? It's not even a daily thing. If I'm measuring something, I either do it in inches, or feet, rarely yards. I've never once had to convert feet into miles, and I can't imagine I'm unique in this. When I have needed to, it's usually converting ...
I’ve never once had to convert feet into miles, and I can’t imagine I’m unique in this.
100% this. Look, imperial may be silly, but some of the arguments for changing to metric are also very silly. Things are usually at a mile scale or a foot scale, and I don't really need to go between the two.
And sure, converting between different units is convenient in metric, but how often do you have to do that? So you can easily tell me how many liters of water would be needed to fill a giant, square kilometer fish tank, but who needs to do that? What grade school math problem are you living in?

I'm kind of surprised that it was just a fairly quiet policy change. They could have made a big announcement about it and gotten plenty of praise from comic book fans.
Systemd founder and lead developer Lennart Poettering announced the creation of a new company called Amutable. The Amutable company being led by Chris Kühl (CEO), Christian Brauner (CTO) and Lennart Poettering (Chief Engineer) will be focused on delivering determinism and verifiable integrity to Linux systems.
How does a company like this make money? Like, is it basically a consulting firm that plans to do development on core Linux features? Custom dev work that they are also able to open source? They already have quite a few employees on the about page.
Unfortunately, the only open source physical media player I'm aware of is the Tangara. Their most recent blog post is from July, 2025, and mentions some tweaks they want to make before doing another production run. So there might be more units coming, but there will be a wait.
What a coincidence, I just saw someone playing a 3DS (not XL I think) on the train on the way home today. I haven't seen someone playing a dedicated handheld console in forever. I should've struck up a conversation about it.
I also saw someone using an MP3 player last week. Single-purpose electronics making a small comeback this year?
I will never understand systems that run a full operating system for something like a slideshow kiosk.
Yeah, definitely. This device does have a few features (the circular light at the bottom is where you can scan a QR code), but I still suspect this could have been implemented without a full operating system.
Had my learner's permit at 15, and regular license at 16, which is pretty standard in the US. The driving school for me was literally the high school. Like, the driving class was one of the classes you take in your regular school. That is also pretty common in the US.
Oh interesting, maybe it's just more of a western US thing and I assumed it was the whole country. I live in Utah now, and every high school has it here. Also every high school (from what I remember) in California also had it.
My opinion about Far Cry 2 did a complete 180 over the last few years. When it first came out, all I remember thinking was that it was less technically impressive than Crysis. (I was just obsessed with graphics in 2008. There were many of us like that. I have changed.) Now I see it as the most distinct entry in the series.
They definitely do! A very distinctive look for FC2, another thing that sets it apart from the rest of the series. (I mean, OK, Blood Dragon is very distinct, too, but that's kind of another thing.)
Unfortunately, there are still no computers that can run Crysis well. Some things are outside the reach of current science. Maybe in another ten years or so, we'll get there. It's still worth playing, though.

That's interesting, I'll try to learn more about that.
So, in this case, the community I was trying to post to was Vinyl and LPs - Analogue Music Goodness. There is also a user with that name on lemmy.world. If I search "[email protected]" on Mastodon, does that mean both of them should show up? And what would their names be? One would start with ! and the other start with @?
I like it! And an impressive lack of javascript, too! :D At first I just assumed that the slide-in animation would be done by some javascript library. The CSS animation is nicely done.
