Indoor studio shot. There are a few unfinished pieces in this view of where I work inside the house where it's warm.

I wove this studio rug many years ago when I owned my AVL 40", 8 harness Home Loom. I used cotton rug yarn for the warp and white mop cord for the weft. After 20+ years it is still holding up.

Seeing what happens when I cut holes in the page and then stitch over heavily. Cutting the threads to get ragged fringes, how much can this sketchbook paper take before falling apart?

Love your freeform work. One of these days I want to get a hold of a sewing machine and try some ideas that are kicking around in my head with some of the textiles I'm weaving. 😊

@stevod1@pixelfed.art avatar stevod1 , to random

The thick yarn on the shuttle and used in the weft is cotton and the thin thread like yarn in the warp is silk. I made a set of stick shuttles with my M1 Ultra laser. This weaving is done on my 30-inch Flip Rigid Heddle loom. I got the idea very loosely from thinking about rep weave. I wanted to see what would happen putting these two yarns together.

I finished the experimental handwoven piece using cotton yarn and strips of plastic shopping bag. 100% 10/2 cotton yarn, 100% 1/4-inch strips of shopping bag. It was hand washed in the bathtub with some patchouli detergent and warm water. After it dried completely I pressed it front and back between two sheets of baking parchment with an iron set to polyester setting. White, brown, and two shades of gray bags were used with a variety of red, green, blue, and black printing on the bags.

This is a new experimental piece using cotton yarn and strips of plastic shopping bag.

I have woven a hem of six shots of cotton thread and am hem-stitching the edge so it doesn't unravel when the finished piece comes off the loom.

Here in working on tension, beating, and selveges. I'm using some yarn that was given to me. I made the small shuttles with my M1 Ultra laser.

Art Tools & How I Work: I got this heavy hunk of metal from my father in-law. It is great for keeping things flat after gluing.

Concept for an open studio invitation. I used my M1 Ultra to pen draw the title on the front and cut the arched window and the card from some cardstock. I created the printed interior tip-in with a picture of my studio space, invitation text and a QR Code of map coordinates using Affinity Designer and had it printed at a copy shop.

@stevod1@pixelfed.art avatar stevod1 , to random

I made up a new set of business cards. Here is the front and back of one of them. I use a copy shop in a neighboring town to print them on digital cardstock.

@stevod1@pixelfed.art avatar stevod1 , to random

Discarded plastic cards make great paint spreaders and scrapers. I bought this brayer originally to use in printmaking but ended up using it to press some painted paper so not I don't even try and clean it off and use it to make paint transfers.

What are paint transfers? I brush acrylic paint on the printed side of a laser print that has been printed backwards and lay it wet side down on what I want to adhere it to. I use the brayer to help press it firmly down. After it has dried I dampen it with water and rub the paper off revealing the laser print underneath which is now right reading. I most use this technique to add titles to the front of my assemblages.

I know this isn't an art image but 43 years ago today my sweetheart and I were married and sealed for time and eternity in the Oakland, California Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is the best part of my life and I am truly blessed that Heavenly Father helped us find each other. :-)

For anyone using an xTool M1 Ultra, even though you may hear or read that drawing with pens is the only operation that allows the lid to remain open it's not true. This was confirmed by technical support when I contacted them about this. What if you want other color options such as what Cricut offers besides the eight official color pens xTool offers? Although some Cricut pens like the set of 30 I purchased fit into the pen holder unfortunately they are a bit too long to allow the lid to be closed. So here's how I modified them so they work with the lid closed.

  1. I set up a marking jig with my Xacto saw miter box and lightly sawed a mark/guide around the circumference of the end of the pen barrel while rotating the pen as I sawed.
  2. Then I used a utility knife to finish cutting through the barrel of the pen while pressing down on the blade while carefully rotating the barrel being careful not to cut through the plug.
  3. I then cut a slit through the width of the piece that will be removed from the end of the barrel and peeled it off.
  4. The only thing remaining to do was to push the end of the plug flush into the end of barrel.

I now have an assortment of 30 color pens to use with M1 Ultra. :-)

Here is another one I'm working on. Everything except the box has been laser cut and assembled. Everything is now waiting for some color.

@stevod1@pixelfed.art avatar stevod1 , to random

Here is an in process image of one of the pieces I'm currently working on. The chair is hand built and the fish at the bottom were laser cut from 3mm basswood plywood. Still more to come. Stay tuned for the finished piece.

I found instructions for making this handy clamp on Maker Design Lab and I thought it would make a good tool for gluing small pieces for my assemblage work. I used the M1 Ultra to laser cut the parts. My first attempt was rather rough and I had to make some adjustments to the original SVG file that was provided to download.

Here I am working on a pattern for an m-house in Affinity Designer. This will go in the same assemblage with the three tiny sofa chairs. I will save it as an SVG file and bring it into XCS (xTool Creative Space) so the parts can be laser cut. A few of the items will be blade cut from card stock. I could probably design all the parts in XCS but I find working in Affinity Designer easier with all the tools I'm most familiar with.

I finally got the ventilation system set up in the indoor studio and did my first laser cutting project this afternoon with the M1 Ultra using the 20W laser module. The next thing to do is glue the pieces of these three sofa chairs together. I cut the pieces from a small sheet of 3mm thick basswood plywood. More to come.

The xTool LightGrip cutting mat is a bit too sticky for my liking so I got the xTool M1 Ultra Electrostatic Mat which arrived this afternoon. Works great so far and it was easy to install.

I'm working on a couple of revised art business card ideas that I hope to utilize the M1 Ultra to aid in producing them and will post results.

My two all-time favorite shuttles. They were both handmade by the late Jim Ahrens. One he gave me as a generous gift and the other I bought from him. He was not only generous with the shuttle but generous with his time and knowledge. He told me when I visited him that he had no weaving knowledge to keep to himself and was willing to share all. I feel honored and blessed to have known him the short time I did.

I use a cordless hand drill to wind the yarn on to the bobbins.
