A maturing Scots bloke, I retired a couple of years back and about time too. Living in rural central Scotland, I now spend most of my spare time out wandering the patch and surrounds with my camera. We have a Northern view of clear sky, weather permitting so often indulging in astro-photos and time-lapse. I walk, take photos, listen to Prog Rock and read fiction.

The US Govt. shutdown is about to get a lot worse for the 40 million (yes 40 million) people in the USA who depend on food aid;

next week, if the shutdown continues (as it looks like ti will), funding for food aid will be halted, leaving 40 million vulnerable to malnutrition if charities cannot pick up the slack (as they not be able to do).

As I said earlier today: 'If you want to know how politicians see us all, just look at how they treat the vulnerable'...

Did you know there a global coal boom?

According to Green Transition team, solar and wind have overtaken coal and everything is totally cool from now on. We just need to aggressively roll out those great big beautiful wind and solar machines.

But that's not the story at all.

More evidence of the problems with the Department of Work & Pensions, this time in the administration of the Access to Work scheme, which as Action of Disability conclude in evidence to the National Audit Office is failing the very people it is intended to help.

Problems range from delays in gaining support, declines in the support on offer and the withdrawal of access/communication avenues for clients... A2W is failing but the DWP seems not to care.

I sometimes sing that little mashup. My wife reminds me they come from two different songs. Of course I know that—but they fit together so well. The first line is from an old African American spiritual with unknown origins. The second borrows from High Hopes, written by Sammy Cahn (lyrics) and Jimmy Van Heusen (music). So we move—from trouble to hope. 🐜

A friend once told me: Hope isn’t a course of action, but wishing is. I think I kind of get that. Hope means knowing there’s a light somewhere, and waiting for it to show up on your face. Wishing… well, wishing requires a magical entity to grant the favor. Like rubbing a lantern to conjure a genie. 🧞 A person might wish by closing their eyes and asking a numinous presence for help.

Hope, though—it’s always there. At least until the very end, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. And it gets brighter if you help it along. If you hope for a new car, wishing won’t get you there. But working, saving, showing up—that might. If you hope someone will help you, it works best if you ask. Ask a real person. Wishing alone probably won’t bring the help.
