Aviation emissions are usually seen as a technological issue; more efficient planes, better (sustainable) aviation fuel etc is the answer..... but what if organisational issues would make a more immediate impact:

reduce the number of semi-filled/empty flights (require all flights to be full to at least more fully booked);

reduce or even abolish business class, both expanding passenger numbers per flight (less flights) & putting off business travellers.

Two simple chilling facts

  1. There's four orders of magnitude more solar energy available than we need to power civilization.

https://norden.social/@hart/116079729462399297

  1. Most of the emissions that are causing civilization to collapse are caused by fossil fuel industry and transport itself.

https://norden.social/@hart/116079723621384871

The conclusion that fossil fuels are the main enemy of humanity is not far fetched at all at this point.

It turns out that fungus growing termites sometimes cultivate Termitomyces titanicus. This is an excellent scientific name.

CORRECTION:
I assumed they had to work like ants. Wrong! (A fruiting body would only emerge from a dead ant colony not so with these termites) Something about macrotermitinaes nuptial flights stimulates mushroom fruiting. (!) They get covered in pink spores.

And you can eat it!

Hence the species name.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar aral , to random

Right, folks, so there is an account on mastodon.social ( @8124 ) that has been libelling me and others, defaming us as antisemites for the longest time.

They just sent the posts attached.

They have been reported to mastodon.social and I have raised my concerns with them and yet no action has been taken against that account even though the account has been suspended on at least three major Mastodon servers and limited on at least four others.

It is not limited or suspended on mastodon.social meaning that their libellous posts have the potential of percolating to mastodon.social’s 258K active users and beyond.

At this point, I will be taking legal advice about what my options are.

I would also urge you, if you have been making posts in opposition to Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people and/or posts critical of Israel and/or Zionism to:

  1. Look through @8124 ’s timeline

  2. Screenshot any posts you find where your posts have been quoted and you are being defamed and categorised as antisemitic with the inclusion of the hashtag.

  3. Please send me those screenshots to [email protected] as evidence to be used in possible future legal proceedings.

Please also let me know if you would be interested in being part of a group action if such a legal option exists for us to take.

I have had enough of this.

Thank you.

So COP30 has concluded an agreement, but of course there's no 'road map'... so once again we have pious words but no settled multilateral plan to get to targets

Individual countries can of course do what they wish, but while the difficulties of reaching a consensus on rhetoric have been (partly) surmounted (again), a proper (enforceable?) action plan proved (unsurprisingly) too difficult... the fossil fuel lobbyists will see this as 'job done' no doubt.

@Alice@beige.party avatar Alice , to random

WARNING: Long post and NO point, but a very real example of what it's like to try to have a conversation with me...

To start, I have autism and ADHD (AuDHD) and I just had a conversation with a stranger that's a pretty typical conversation I have where I start talking about something I care a LOT about but then get ten words in and uncontrollably switch to a different topic and keep repeating that pattern until the other person manages to escape.

Here's a near transcription of my last conversation that started earlier this evening at a show for a band I like called The Beths where I was wearing a t-shirt for an adjacent band called ALVVAYS and saw another person wearing a different ALVVAYS shirt:

Me: I like your ALVVAYS shirt! Did you see The Beths open for ALVVAYS the last time they were in California?

Them: Yeah! I saw both at The Greek in Berkeley!

Me: Cool! I saw them both in Oakland!

Them: Neat! I went for ALVVAYS and The Beths opened and I really liked them!

Me: Me too! I've been listening to ALVVAYS for years, but didn't know about The Beths until they opened and I really liked them which is why I’m here now!

(This is where AuDHD Alice kicks in)

Me (continuing): I was JUST thinking about the chain of events that lead to me being here, so it was that ALVVAYS show where The Beths opened and I wouldn't have even known about ALVVAYS if my coworker hadn't introduced me to them about ten years ago.

The reason my coworker mentioned them is because I was wearing a Jawbreaker shirt so he realized we liked similar music and thought I might like ALVVAYS and he was totally right!

The reason I was wearing a Jawbreaker shirt is because we worked for a scrappy startup in the Bay Area where nobody cared about anything and you could wear whatever you wanted as long as you got your job done.

I got that job because I used to work for Yelp because my former Yelp coworker started working for that startup and referred me.

I got the job at Yelp because my mom had stage 4 cancer and was DYING so I moved from Chicago to Phoenix to take care of her and Yelp had a location in Arizona so I interviewed and I got that job.

I'm pretty sure I got the job because my resume used Avenir as the font and the hiring manager liked it.

We also talked about The Neverending Story which is one of my favorite movies and apparently one of his, so we bonded because I mentioned job interviews making me feel like Atreyu trying to run through those laser shooting sculptures and he said he totally got it and somehow I still got the job.

That job eventually lead me to the startup which brought me to the coworker who introduced me to ALVVAYS which introduced me to The Beths and that's why I’m here now.

How did you find out about The Beths?

Them: Oh. Uh. Just that ALVVAYS show where The Beths opened, as I previously mentioned.

Me: Oh okay good talk have a nice night.

They are obviously and consequentially different barbarisms—one had reproductive freedom, vaccines, and trans health care in it, at least for a while—and I can tell you why I have sincerely preferred one to the other. But we oughtn’t to kid ourselves. From the perspective of a world of increasingly unimaginable maldistribution of resources, cascading ecological collapse, a genocide cheered on by a putatively liberal order, both are barbarisms.”

The difficulty will be if they adopt the UK Labour line of Right-imitation, which if they look over the channel, they should see has not gone well.

Here's a nice list of tips, that are human interpretations of the recommendations in the spec:

https://afb.org/digital-inclusion/accessibility-resources/writing-effective-image-descriptions

And the dryer, but more deterministic decision tree: https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/images/decision-tree/

Big takeaway: empty string as alt is the proper way to do it in several cases. You can avoid penalties by doing alt=" ", and you shouldsometimes.

even bigger takeaway:

Don't do performative image descriptions, because you have to. Instead empathize with the target audience and try to include them, because you want to.

Inclusivity is about empathy, not about checking boxes.

    iwein ,
    @iwein@mas.to avatar

@GroupNebula563 I guess I didn't understand the purpose and effect of MSC correctly then. Nobody is ultimately coerced into following it, right? So if any individual moderator decides to ban all AI, they can remove the posts, and if some server leadership group consents to following the MSC, they can. Lot's of small servers would then make the MSC rather irrelevant, like say, the Agile Manifesto or something like that?

My toy language has three flow operators:

    for
    foreach
    fordict

for is a standard range iterator. foreach iterates over a sequential store (array or string). fordict iterates over a key, value store (a dictionary). it is necessary to distinguish the two by name because the language is untyped, and whereas foreach must specify one variable name to iterate over, fordict specifies two, which is very confusing to differentiate by argument overloading alone.

    do you hate this?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

Maybe if ISO stops publishing paid pdf's and starts publishing directly to Wikipedia, they'll save costs and we'll have more compliance to the less relevant ones but no authorative source then… I don't really care tbh but Wikipedia does 🤣
