I am ditching my Jota text editor for Android. I love it, but hit one key or something by mistake and everything poofs, with no chance of getting back.
So...
looking for a notepad app (for Android) with the following requirements:

  • No ads, preferably fully offline. (I do NOT want to sync with it)
  • Ability to change text/font: Background colour, text colour, text size. Ability to change font (I use monospace exclusively)
  • Preferably "quick start", just open a pad/page
  • No support with buttons for markdown needed, I have that in other apps. This is a notepad only, or jotpad, if you like.

Any suggestions welcome

hello F-droid people. Id like to try to install Transistor radio app on an old Samsung A3. But, I cannot get F-droid or F-droid basic to work. They throw a javascript trust type error and wont populate the apps. I tried downloading the Transistor apk and installing directly but errors happen and it wont open. Is this not possible on the old phone?

@jackyan China distributions don't use Google Services, which are usually the way to enforce this. Then again some Chinese OEMs do things like this for a while now, maybe easier to disable but still problematic.

But I am in Denmark, no VPN.
The apps do not appear to be Russian, so I am assuming it is some sort of localisation - any knowledge or ideas?

I have a rather peculiar problem.

  • I use personalDNSfilter (https://www.zenz-solutions.de/personaldnsfilter-wp/) to block ads system-wide. It's basically like running a local pi-hole using a local VPN.
  • I would also like to use Orbot () and run some apps (specifically Nextcloud) that don't natively support proxying through Orbot's VPN.

The problem is, Android won't let me run two VPNs at the same time. And blocking ads without a VPN would require rooting my phone, which I don't want to do. However:

  • personalDNSfilter can expose the DNS server on port 5300 without using the VPN (which is useless in itself).
  • Orbot can expose its HTTP and SOCKS proxy without using the VPN (which is also useless in itself).

Is there some way to setup a custom VPN that would combine these two things, i.e., let me route some apps through Orbot's proxy and use the local DNS server (provided by personalDNSfilter) at port 5300? I was looking at OpenVPN for Android (https://github.com/schwabe/ics-openvpn), but I'm honestly really confused. Help please? 😅 Boosts appreciated.

@ret @eighthave F-Droid (the word) is many things: a repo client, a repo software, a repomaker and an actual apps repo. The "f-droid.org repo" is centralized (w/ mirrors), yes, by its nature of being controlled by the repo admin.

When we say decentralized we mean that: you can use any F-Droid client with any F-Droid app repository out there.

Users are fed the notion of "there can be only one app store", be it from Apple or Google, and find it hard to grasp the idea of what can do.

@ret @eighthave Now, following that, the legal post pertains to any repository in general, but we can only speak for "f-droid.org repo" since this is the one we admin, is currently the biggest (by volume) and users usually refer to it by saying "F-Droid".

@happyborg The phrase "Do your own research" implies finding out where a certain service is hosted and judging by that, eg. If it's on AWS and you don't like Bezos, you'll decide to skip. It did not imply anything about anyone.

Oof, the Android keyboard (as available in GrapheneOS) is quite a step back coming from iOS. Turns out there are some useful features in iOS that I really miss: emoji suggest/replace when typing, auto language/keyboard switch between different chats, and Dutch keyboard dictionary.

I'm not really sure how to fix this. Does anyone know whether there is a keyboard for Android that supports these features? I investigated some on F-Droid, but none seem to come close.

Last week, the long-awaited new generation apps were released for and ! They are faster and with new features (see https://proton.me/blog/new-mail-apps for details).

Especially interesting for me is the use of : about 80% of the code is shared between the platforms now. This is thanks to allowing us to write native Swift/Kotlin code on top of a solid Rust core.
