To piggyback on Alison’s post, for ME, unless I specifically ask for feedback like “hey I’m stuck here, this isn’t working, what do you think?” then I’m posting music just to share it, like Here’s A Thing I Did!” At that point I’m usually done with it and have moved on, so no, I’m not going to go back and re-do the guitar because SomeGuy didn’t like it. You absolutely don’t have to like everything but I also reject the premise that oooh it’s PUBLIC NOW so I have to accept every 2¢ opinion on it.

It’s sure been a year.
In the past month, 2 of our grown kids moved back into our tiny semi-detached house, one with their spouse and one with her dog. So 3 big dogs, 5 adults now. My small basement studio is now an apartment, drums packed away. It’s funny how your situation dictates the type of music you make; when the kids were little I did quiet, late-night stuff, close-miked headphone music. When they were teens the drums and amps came out. Now? Who knows.

This all coincidentally coincided with me repairing my very old TR-606 drum machine, which I pick up next week. So things might get different. My lofty goal for 2026 is a new, not bgm album. Have a bunch of unfinished songs and scraps. Have several local folks who’ve offered to play on stuff…I just have to fucking do it. Anyway feel free to nudge me in several months, like, “hey where’s that thing you said you were gonna do?” because man I’m bad at following through sometimes.

Going through the archives: one-offs, oddities, covers and jokes. Why not.

Here’s a song from 2007, recorded on my old G4 PowerBook in Garageband, using that tiny little pinhole laptop mic. We had spent weeks cleaning and repairing our house, trying to sell it, and everything was packed away and I had no recording stuff. It’s bad memories actually but this song is kind of funny to me in a dopey way.

This song from 2011 was done for a SongFight! in which the title prompt was “Boron Rod.” I had to look up what a Boron Rod was and then, using that criteria, jeez it’s pretty challenging to come up with something that isn’t incredibly goofy. So I did a sort of tongue-in-cheek acoustic guitar ballady thing with some metaphors and silly lyrics sung with a straight face.
Anyhow, I won the SongFight.

Doubting Thomas Dolby

Today at the Y the guy at the shower beside me was whistling the song from Titanic. Like piercingly high, shrill whistling, bouncing off the tiles and into my brain. He was a good whistler, skilled even, but it was the volume and the context that was disturbing. Does anyone enjoy the sound of someone whistling, really? Don’t wanna harsh anyone’s fun, but loudly whistling the song that’s in your head feels a bit like an old-timey version of playing a song loudly on your phone speaker.

This tea towel is still one of my favourite craft show purchases. It’s a screen-printed image of a soundwave. The sound is of sizzling bacon.

Hey there, I need help from people who watch PeerTube videos! 👋

Do you have favourite PeerTube channels you would recommend to others? Or do you run a PeerTube channel yourself?

I run a site at https://fedi.video that tries to highlight the best videos and accounts on PeerTube. It's intended as a safe, easy way to discover videos. It would be great to get more channels listed, so it would be brilliant to hear your recommendations! 🙂
