Layering is vital in cold weather.

Subzero windchill today. Stopped by the river briefly on Friday. Found 7-8 bald eagles fishing in the open water next to the dam. Gonna have to see if I can't get some pics this afternoon.

I'm admittedly anthropomorphizing, but I like to think that birds are often seen with their chins up because they understand, on an instinctual level, that after the 2 steps backward there's the 3 steps forward to look forward to.

Photograph of an adult Canada goose and two goslings standing in short grasses and feeding on green vegetation in front of them. All the geese are facing right in profile. The adult goose is in the foreground of the left frame and only its head, bent neck, and upper torso are in frame. The two goslings are behind the adult but lead it in the center frame. The goslings are mostly visible but their hindquarters are obscured by the adult's head and neck. Canada geese have white and tan mottled chest and belly feathers, white under-tail feathers, brown back and wing feathers, a long, slender black neck, a black head with a white cheek patch that run under the upper throat and chin, dark eyes, black bills, and black legs and webbed feet. Canada geese goslings have brown and yellow mottled body feathers, dark eyes, black beaks, and brown, textured legs and webbed feet.

The adult has its head turned to the right in profile and the gosling has its head turned slightly to the right in fore-shortened profile. The other adult is out of focus and is swimming to the right in profile in the lower left corner of the frame. Only its neck and head are visible with the rest of its body out of frame on the left. My favorite spot on Clear Creek Trail to catch foliage ('23, '24, '25). The wall (lower right) & ground (left) is where I find my favorite spring wildflower (Anemone hepatica) which is one of the 1st to bloom.

Vertically cropped landscape photograph of a fall scene on Clear Creek Trail in Coralville, Iowa. There is a gray concrete trail that extends from the bottom right frame that turns left, turns right, and then disappears behind dense trees and foliage. The trail is in shadow and highlighted here and there by sunlight passing through the canopy above it. The trail is bounded on either side by dense tall slender trees and undergrowth. There is a mix of shadow and light in the trees and most of the foliage is gold or yellow with patches of green and rust. The upper branches and leaves of a tall golden maple in the left frame are brightly highlighted by sunlight that has just topped the tall trees in the right frame.

The Guardian kindly selected a photo👇 I submitted for their "Reader's Best Photos" section. This is 3rd pic I've submitted & 2 of 3 have been selected. No, they don't offer💰 for your photo. It's just a nice little honor & an affirmation that my work isn't half bad👍

I'm out of practice photographing birds since I've mostly been taking flower and insect photos all summer. But I did catch a halfway decent shot of a turkey vulture in flight on Tuesday. I'm a big fan of these incredible birds.

Not much in the way of color but it was a lovely walk, the sky/clouds were still beautiful, and it was a gorgeous morning on the river. Can't ask for much better 👍

As of Monday the lovely hummingbirds are still enjoying the feeder as well as the flowers in the garden👇. Haven't seen the ♂️ recently but this♀️female & either another♀️or a juvenile were visiting.

If it a juvie, It'd be cool if its the ♀️'s fledgling

This monarch, a skipper, & some bumblebees were enjoying the zinnias Thursday. Seen monarchs around the garden nearly every day now. They seem to especially like the zinnias, the most abundant large flower in the garden right now.

1st planted lacy phacelia 3 yrs ago. Noticed lots of small (¼ in) sweat bees that climbed the stamens to gather pollen. Not often you see a metallic green bee covered in purple pollen so I plant phacelia every yr to try to (re)capture it.

That's an awesome name! It's considered the same in the US. I think it's nature in the US southwest and Mexico but highly recommended for pollinators. I haven't caught a photo yet but the big bumble bees visit it a lot too👍

This 4'-5' native common milkweed volunteer showed up in my garden 2 yrs ago (pics from this past Sunday). The flowers smell marvelous! Love that it pulls in a insects/arachnids & creates a cool micro-environment. Great for macro pics!

Photograph of a common milkweed plant inflorescence with out of focus leaves and flower in the background. This species of milkweed has large ball-shaped inflorescences made up small, pink flowers. Each flower has five sepals and five pink petals that bend downward around the stem. Atop each flower is a structure called a corona that consists of five hood-like florets that contain curved hook-shaped structures called horns.

Still really busy so just popping in to drop off some baby photos.

1st gosling pics this yr & these tykes were already quite big. Park/creek/ponds in this location becomes a day care center for goslings every yr. Hopefully I'll see some ducklings soon too🤞

Photograph of a Canada goose gosling sitting amid short green grass and blooming creepy Charlie (or maybe henbit?) with a pair of fellow goslings in the foreground and the lower belly of an adult goose visible in the background. The gosling is facing left leaving one eye visible. Canada geese goslings have brown and yellow mottled body feathers, dark eyes, black beaks, and brown, textured legs and webbed feet.

Windchill this am is -27°F 🥶. Going outside for a walk seems ill-conceived unless your extremities are superfluous. I believe the technical term for this weather pattern is "cold as keeeerap". And so, dear reader, my cabin fever continues, unabated 🙁.

Gonna be offline for a few weeks friends. Hit by an unexpected issue that saw me hospitalised last week. Gonna take a few weeks too recover.

In the meantime, I'll be looking forward to all your nature/bird photography/art etc. To help keep me close to what I love.

Something funny to leave you with from earlier this year. 'Bombs Away'.

Take care all, enjoy getting out with nature.

The Guardian's website was kind enough to feature a photo👇 I submitted for their reader submissions.

I thought that was cool! First time I've had someone publish a submission let alone featuring at the top of the page. Luckily a friend told me because I'm on a news blackout for awhile.

The other readers' submissions are fantastic (especially the mammatus clouds👍). Here's the link is you want to take a look.
