This week, we examine Trump’s recent executive order that threatens to block all oil from entering .

It’s economic warfare aimed at regime change and amounts to collective punishment of the Cuban people. It’s also based on claims that are not substantiated by any evidence.

In 1960, then Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs Lester Mallory laid out the argument for waging economic war on Cuba. The government, he wrote, should deny "money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.”

Mallory also wrote that the US should be “as adroit and inconspicuous as possible” in advancing this policy.[...] The Cuban government, not the US, would be blamed for the country’s economic problems.

Jan. 18 was a Sunday morning. I was on my 11th straight day of covering the unrest in after the fatal shooting of . I was exhausted.

But that day, I went to work as a journalist again, documenting a small gathering of community members at Cities Church, in St. Paul,— they were there taking issue with one of the pastors of that church, who was apparently also working as the acting field director for 's St. Paul field office. I was one of the journalists who documented what happened that day.

Twelve days later, I woke up to forceful knocking at 6 in the morning. The men at my door identified themselves as federal agents and claimed they held an arrest warrant for me...

But the defendants disputed that the sledgehammers were “weapons of offence”, and insisted they were intended only to damage property.

As the verdicts were being read, the defendants held hands and embraced in the dock, as families and supporters cheered and wept.

The six defendants have been held for around 18 months on remand- exceeding standard custodial time limits.
