I used to prefer backend development, because I found frontend dev more challenging

Then I started to learn Tailwind, Vue 3 with Pinia and Tanstack and now I feel unstoppable!

I even learned React and React Native to build the mobile apps for Pixelfed and Loops, and while I don't mind React, I prefer Vue for web, it has a better DX imo.

I've come a long way from Vue 2 and Bootstrap 4, and I owe a lot to these amazing open source projects, and you, the community for keeping me inspired 2 build

Today I had a moment of autistic joy in a social situation.

Where I live there are no parks close by, but three beautiful graveyards, where I go for a walk with Lumi daily.

This morning a woman asked me for specific details about the graveyards, because she wanted to attend a funeral and didn't know which of the three was the right one and I was able to provide these details for her, because recognising details and patterns is how my autistic mind works and experiences joy. It made me very happy that I was able to help her and that I had a social interaction without having to mask my autism, but it being useful for someone else instead.

This reminds me of the comment of a mutual on my post about infodumping concerning the autistic need of gaining knowledge and sharing it with others.

This one was worth sharing from FB.
I’m seventy-two. My name’s Harris. I used to be a high school history teacher in Ohio.
    Now I hide backpacks.
Not in schools. Not in libraries. Not in food banks with lines around the block.
I leave them where kids disappear.
Behind the bleachers at the football field no one uses anymore.
Beside the boarded-up convenience store that still smells like spilled beer.
Under the bridge where spray-paint tags scream louder than adults ever do.
    People ask why.
Because that’s where I used to find my students.
When my wife died, the classroom was the only place that kept me standing. Then the district closed my school. Budget cuts, they said. Fewer kids “worth saving.”
I drove around those first months like a ghost, parking in old lots, remembering faces. The boy who used to doodle in the margins. The girl who never took her hood off. The one kid who sat through three funerals in a semester and still turned in his essays.
I started noticing where kids hid when they had nowhere else to go.
And one night, I remembered something: the way my students’ backpacks told the whole story.
Worn zippers, missing straps, heavy with secrets no curriculum could carry.
So I bought a few used packs from Goodwill. Filled them with small, stubborn things.
A peanut butter sandwich wrapped tight.
A notebook and a Sharpie, with my scrawl inside: “Write it down. It matters.”
A pair of headphones and an old MP3 player loaded with free audiobooks and a playlist I called “Stay.”
A bag of trail mix. A bottle of water. A cheap phone card.
I didn’t put in Bibles or pamphlets. Didn’t tape motivational quotes to the straps.
Just pieces of normal life. Things that say: you still belong in this world.
The first time I left one, under the bleachers, my hands shook like I was committing a crime.
    Next week, it was gone.
In its place? A folded piece of paper: “Thanks. I ate the sandwich. I’m still here.”
    That was enough.
Week by week, I left more. And the backpacks started talking back.
A hair tie, left for the “next girl who forgets hers.”
A library card, taped to a thank-you note: “They reopened. Go check it out.”
A Polaroid of a dog with “He’s waiting at home. So am I.”
Last winter, a backpack showed up on my porch.
Inside: a sandwich. A notebook. A pair of socks.
    And a letter.
It was from a boy who used to linger behind the gas station. He’d planned to join a gang that night. Said the backpack stopped him. Not because of the food, but because of one scribble in the notebook:
“You deserve to see another season.”
He wrote, “I chose life. I got a dishwashing job. Now I’m leaving backpacks too. With your list.”
I sat on the porch until my coffee went cold, holding that letter like it was oxygen.
Now my neighbors help. A retired nurse slips in first-aid kits. A baker leaves muffins with a note: “Still good. Still loved.” Kids from the neighborhood ride their bikes over and toss packs into the trunk of my car. Nobody signs their names. Nobody takes credit.
It isn’t politics. It isn’t charity drives or photo ops. It’s just one quiet thing in a loud, divided country.
The world talks about walls, borders, crime rates, and statistics.
But when you stand under a bridge at dusk, you don’t see numbers.
You see a kid trying not to cry where nobody’s watching.
That’s who the backpacks are for.
My grandson asked me once, “Grandpa, why don’t you just hand them out?”
I told him, “Because shame is loud. Kindness has to whisper. Sometimes people can only pick up help when no one’s looking.”
    I don’t know how many backpacks I’ve left. I don’t keep count.
But I know this: in a world that makes so many feel disposable, something as small as trail mix and a Sharpie can turn a night around.
You don’t have to save the country.
You don’t have to fix politics.
You don’t even have to change a life.
Just leave something soft where a broken soul might land.
Sometimes all it takes is a backpack—forgotten by the world, but found by the one person who needed it most.
And that, I’ve learned, is still teaching.

The rushed integration of “AI,” usually by media owners who largely only see it as a way to cut corners and undermine labor, certainly isn’t helping. Add in the twisted financial incentives of an ad-based engagement infotainment economy, and you get exactly the sort of journalistic outcomes academics long predicted."

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 674 , Monday 01/09/2025

Had a bit of a lie in this morning getting up just before 7am.

Got downstairs, hung out the laundry from last night & squeezed in another wash.

Emptied the dishwasher, then got my breakfast.

When we went to my MiLs the other weekend I noticed that the door was missing from the electric meter cupboard, I told Mrs S about it & pointed out the dangers associated with it being like that.
When I checked where she was with it this morning she was talking about going to measure it next weekend. This seemed way too long to leave it to me - while I don't get on with my MiL I really don't want her to come to harm!
So I pulled on my big boy pants, packed a small bag with tape measure, pad, pencil & a pair of secateurs to cut back some of the small forrest that is growing around her front porch!

It was a really nice trip across the moors to my MiLs, it's a decent distance - about 45 minutes but ever so pretty, even with rain clouds scudding overhead.
Got to my MiL's & got the measurements then did some minor clearing up around the porch.

I didn't disturb my MiL as she sleeps a lot these days, so when I was done I packed my little bag up again & headed home.
Made a very slight detour to a small cafe / garden centre that is basically on the route home to pick up a couple of Cornish pasties & a couple of buns - a scone for Mrs S & a slice of banana & salted caramel cake for yours truly! Things are so expensive these days, 15 quid for a nice, but small treat!

Got home & ordered a overbox to sit on top of the damaged meter cupboard.
Hopefully that will arrive Wednesday & then I can maybe go Thursday or Friday to fit it.

Spent the afternoon in Night City venting my frustration on the baddies there!

We had the Cornish pasties with some baked beans for tea - really rather tasty!

    Final Thoughts.

Once more Mrs S more or less ignores my advice - this time I could not let it lie. With the weather turning the electric meter being exposed like that is cause for multiple concerns & much as I would like to bury my head in the sand & ignore it I find I cannot. There is core part of me that cannot help but help folk in need.

Up early again - the laundry pile is unforgiving.

It's been a day of being triggered, oh so many times.

Amongst other things I found out my sister has been quite ill in hospital all week - she's home now recovering, she's signed off work for a couple of weeks! None of the family chose to tell me ... I cannot begin to explain how much that makes me feel like an outsider in my own family.

Diary of an AuDHD Squirrel. Day 660 , Monday 18/08/2025

    Monday started around 7am.

I went to hang the laundry out after breakfast & discovered that the washing machine had been leaking.
After I had fortified myself with coffee I went ot see if I could identify & stop the leak.

The biggest problem with our washing machine is that it is next to the freezer in the garage in its own little niche. This makes it a barsteward to get to in the event you wanna check it’s working ok.

There was much manoeuvring & man-handling & swearing but I finally got access to see underneath & it looks like the outlet pump is maybe jammed. I couldn’t get to it without taking it out which I didn’t want to do, being a computer engineer not a washing machine engineer.

Anyways a suitably experienced engineer is coming out tomorrow afternoon - I’ll have to move the freezer out of the way to give him more access (& not have to climb back & forth over the washer!).

Ham & pickle sarnies for lunch were followed by an afternoon relaxing & chasing bad guys in Night City.

We had a chicken & bacon pasta bake for tea with banana & ice cream for dessert!

The day ended with a couple of Mrs S’s TV shows.

    Final Thoughts.

I had to clamp down hard on the urge to try & dismantle the washing machine to try & fix it, Mrs S would be most unhappy if I killed it. She likes to wash her clothes very, very regularly.

I do feel like I have failed somehow, that I am not trying hard enough & passing the problem to someone else without putting in enough effort!

    @MAJ1@beige.party avatar MAJ1 , to weirdfolks group

Well I tried - I cannot find anything obviously wrong from a cursory inspection - which sounds easier than it really is, the washing machine has it’s own little niche next to the freezer in the garage - very handy & out of the way when in use but a pain the the proverbials when trying to get into the guts.
It looks like it might be a problem with the outlet pump, either the pipe on the output side (which I can’t get at with removing the pump, which I’m loath to do, is blocked or possibly the pump itself is Donald’d!

Either way I’m a computer engineer not a washing machine engineer & there is the distinct possibility that I will cause far more damage trying to fix it than if I accept my limitations & call in someone who actually knows what they are doing. (Much as that goes against every fibre of my being! )

I will need to move the freezer when the engineer rocks up, because there is precious little access otherwise. Feck n bollocks!!
Moving the freezer means blocking the door from the kitchen to the garage meaning that the only access is via the outer doors!

Sometimes inch perfect floor plans have their downsides!

Right time to make some lunch I think!

Hopefully yon washing machine peep will call us back after lunch!

The Sewing Circle: Hollywood's Female Stars Who Loved Other Women

    2.75 stars

This was another impulse borrow, but unfortunately a rare miss from Queer Liberation Library. It was published in 1995 and it feels perhaps even more dated than that, with some problematic terminology and sensationalist assumptions.

There isn't really an overarching historical argument, much less a rigorous methodology. The book is just a string of seemingly unrelated anecdotes about women in old Hollywood who were probably queer in some way. A few fun factoids, but not what I'm looking for in my queer nonfiction.
