Inside the White House in the hours after Alex Pretti's shooting. "It is inconceivable to some of his allies that he would alter the underlying aim of the mission," write the team at NBC. "The reality is, you can’t stop what you’re doing," a former White House official told them. "This is the whole point of ICE existing in these cities, and Minnesota is not going to be the last state that ICE goes to. Oregon was next. We were not done. We need to keep going."

Indigenous actor Elaine Miles, best known for her roles in "Northern Exposure," "Smoke Signals," Wyvern" and "The Last of Us," was stopped by ICE earlier this month in Redmond, Wa. She showed her tribal ID from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon, a federally recognized form of identification. An agent called her document "fake," saying "anyone can make that." She was released shortly afterwards, but says in a social media post that a similar thing happened to both her son and uncle. Indigenous rights attorney Gabriel Galanda, who does not represent Miles, says it's racial profiling. “People are getting pulled over or detained on the street because of the dark color of their skin.” Here's more from The Seattle Times.

U.S. President Donald Trump wants to double the size of the ICE workforce, but there's a problem with that. More than one-third of new applicants has failed the agency's personal fitness test, which comprises 15 push-ups, 32 sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run in 14 minutes. An email from ICE headquarters to top officials described the new wave of candidates as "athletically allergic." Here's more from @TheAtlantic.

Earlier this week, agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security surrounded and raided an apartment building in Chicago, pulling men, women and children from their beds in the middle of the night. They then posted a "highlight reel" on social media. For his Doomsday Scenario newsletter, Garrett Graff writes about these "Kavanaugh Raids" and their connection to the Palmer Raids, a century ago.

In January, U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office on a wave of anti-immigration sentiment. Views of immigration have changed since then — but perhaps not in the way Trump would have expected. New Gallup polling says the share of adults who say immigration is a "good thing" for the country has jumped, including among Republicans. Here's more from @AssociatedPress.

Members of the British rap punk duo Bob Vylan have had their U.S. visas revoked and are under U.K. police investigation after they led crowdmembers to chant "Death, death to the IDF" at Glastonbury music festival at the weekend. The group performed in front of a screen that said "United Nations have called it a genocide. The BBC calls it a conflict." The following day, rapper Bobby Vylan wrote a post on Instagram captioned, "I said what I said." “Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place,” the post read. “As we grow older and our fire possibly starts to dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us.” Here's more from @CNN.

55-year-old Sae Joon Park has lived in the U.S. since he was seven years old. At age 20, he joined the U.S. army and was deployed to Panama. He was shot twice, flown back to the U.S., honorably discharged, and awarded a Purple Heart. But PTSD caused him to turn to drugs, and he became addicted to crack cocaine. After being arrested and missing a court appearance, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and bail jumping, which scuppered his chances of naturalization. More than a decade ago, he got clean, moved to Hawaii to reunite with his children, and found work. Then yesterday morning, after a warning from ICE, he self-deported to South Korea, knowing that he will probably never see his 85-year-old mother again. " I can't believe that this is happening in America," he told @npr. "That blows me away, like a country that I fought for."
