55-year-old Sae Joon Park has lived in the U.S. since he was seven years old. At age 20, he joined the U.S. army and was deployed to Panama. He was shot twice, flown back to the U.S., honorably discharged, and awarded a Purple Heart. But PTSD caused him to turn to drugs, and he became addicted to crack cocaine. After being arrested and missing a court appearance, he was charged with possession of a controlled substance and bail jumping, which scuppered his chances of naturalization. More than a decade ago, he got clean, moved to Hawaii to reunite with his children, and found work. Then yesterday morning, after a warning from ICE, he self-deported to South Korea, knowing that he will probably never see his 85-year-old mother again. " I can't believe that this is happening in America," he told @npr. "That blows me away, like a country that I fought for."
