This is because all the photobanks I’ve looked at have “useful tools for that perfect picture”. This is another way of saying they all have AI generators. One I think even includes AI images in its standard bank. Signing up to Getty directly isn’t an option because there our photo bill would run into thousands. But I also got a shock when I searched directly on Getty for an image.
An image search result on Getty Images, including the text:
Take any image from "not quite" to "just right". See how you can modify existing images—or generate entirely new ones
"Although many medical journal #editors have made their position known, medical #publishers are, for now, conspicuously silent…The collective resolve of the medical publishing industry is being put to the test. This is an opportunity for the industry to affirm its commitment to safeguard the scholarly record from ideological distortion. #Censorship in health research affects us all. We share a responsibility to stand firm and decry Trump’s war on "gender ideology" as a full-scale assault on the scientific method."
"The new US presidential administration has launched an unprecedented assault on research and higher education. This isn’t just collateral damage from wide-ranging realignment of budgets, which would be bad enough, but an orchestrated attack on academic freedom, research funding, and the institutional autonomy that underpins intellectual progress…Resistance is most effective when collective action amplifies individual efforts rather than occurring in isolation. This means fostering more frequent and open dialogue across all sectors of the academic and research community e.g. [#libraries and #publishers]."
"The #USDA on Friday told staff members it has canceled subscriptions carried by its National Agricultural Library as part of a drive by President Donald #Trump’s administration to cut federal spending. The move appears to drop nearly 400 of the library’s roughly 2000 journals, including many prominent in various agricultural subfields —but curiously none from the world’s three largest scientific publishers, all of which are #ForProfit. USDA staff members depicted the move as hasty, indiscriminate slashing…Studies of journal subscription fees indicate that on average, scientific #SocietyPublishers charge less than such for-profit companies."
PS: (1) Of course the best ag research should be #OpenAccess. But that's a goal, not the current reality, and while we work for that goal, policymaking agencies still need access the best research. (2) If efficiency requires budget cuts, why focus the cuts on journals from #nonprofit#publishers, which on average are lower in price and higher in quality?
Two steps forward, one step back. As the proportion of people working in UK #publishing who come from an 'ethnic minority' falls from 17% to 15%, Dan Conway says #publishers need to 'work hard to understand the disappointing drop in Asian and British Asian staff'.
When
@DickHardt, founder and CEO of hello.coop joined the fediverse, he couldn’t find the news he cared about. So he launched press.coop, and created accounts mirroring the X or RSS feeds of sites he or others from the community wanted to follow. Some accounts got thousands of followers. When our publishers joined the fediverse, Dick and team decided that these publisher-owned accounts might be a more direct way for people to connect with the publisher and their content. So over the next week nearly 100 press.coop accounts will be migrated to official publisher Flipboard.com accounts. If you’re already following a press.coop account, you’ll automatically follow the new one, and there’s no need to do anything. Here’s the full list:
We moved to Mastodon late in 2022, and quickly became big fans. This is one of the reasons we set up #FediBookFair, to help #authors and #publishers to market their books.
We've also set up a Mastodon server for #IndieAuthors. If you know an author that would like to be here but thinks it's too complex, give them our details. We'll help them get set up - for free.
Ben is making the case that the Fediverse is the means by which publishers can re-take the initiative with technology instead of simply having to live with whatever the platforms decide. That is powerful stuff!
📣 It's been a while since we've federated a batch of publishers — so to make up for it, here are 250, and they're big ones.
Today, we're bringing names like @abc, @RollingStone, @forbes, @BleacherReport, @NationalGeographic and @newyorktimes to the fediverse. They join the 174 profiles we've already federated, which include everyone from @19thnews to @Vox
Here's a blogpost with more details on this latest batch of publications that cover news, business, cooking, home design, politics, sports, science and more. Follow their Magazine feeds if you're only interested in one topic, or their whole profiles if you want the lot. The spreadsheet below lists out all federated accounts.
