Dad is alive, talking, on an IV. He was hit by a car crossing a street wearing all dark colors at about 11:00pm. Just for the record, I have pleaded with him to wear the reflective vest I gave him. He refuses to wear it. Now isnt the time to give him an I told you saw.

The security camera alerted me to a car in his driveway. That is odd.

I see him walk in. His balance was off.

I turn on the microphone. The person said something about checking on him. He gave the person his number.

I called several times. It went to VM.

I wait for him to come close to a security camera and yell for him to pick up a phone. He picks up a device (not his phone) and sent a badly typed message.

"I need you

please come over

i was hi by a car and my phone is destroyed"

I live 2 miles away. Grabbed my sister and went to him. There is a knot in the center of his face several scratches. His speech was off.

"Dad, you are going to the ER."

Dad declines.

"Dad, you are going to the ER. Where is your wallet."

I got him to the HR. It was pretty crowded here. But they pulled him back fairly promptly. He has been assigned to a room. Thats where I am now.

They are inspecting his abrasions and poking at him, checking for injuries.

I just had a memory of a sun dial my father made and gave to me. I didn't really know him. He moved across the country after my parents divorced, when I was 7 or so. I wonder where it is now. I think my mom threw it away along with all of my belongings at a moment when we weren't speaking. I feel like I lost everything before France in a fire and not much is left of that time. It really messes with your head to have no trace of who you were before 27.

I am not bringing mom back to this dentists. She can keep this dentist if she wants, but she needs to find her own way to get here.

She refuses to use the dentist close to her. Note that I have been using that dentist for 20+ years. They are fine. But she has this fiction stuck in her mind that the location only hires dentist in training. That isn't true.

There is a day where people can get free cleanings from dentist in training (Available once a month).

ThinkingSapien OP ,
@ThinkingSapien@mstdn.social avatar

Might be relevant that mom grew up poor, and she has within her a tendency to grab whatever she can get for free. So she took up the "deal" to get a free teeth cleaning and did not like the experience.

I've informed her that is not their normal level of service. But she has an inability to retain that memory. Mom is in her mid 70s, and I think she is developing cognitive challenges. There are a number of fictions she has adopted that I cannot remove from her.

The hardest relationships are those from which you can never escape.

Of course, everyone has their own definition of which ones fall into this category but for me it has always been the parent-child one.

I have struggled with these roles from both sides and I'm coming to the realisation my struggles are mostly due to the binding obligation and duty.

Maybe that's why I love my marriage as we're both free to escape whenever but we choose to stay.
