Close-up of a piece of wood against a black background. The wood has not been sawn, but broken naturally, so the fibres are of varying lengths. The longitudinal grain of the wood is clearly visible. Only a small spot in the centre of the image is in sharp focus. The rest is blurred and dissolves into black. This creates great depth and plasticity.
Extreme closeup photograph of a brown-belted bumblebee standing on top of the red and orange florets of a purple coneflower with vague greens in the background. The bee, which takes up roughly half of the upper frame, is facing right in profile and has its proboscis inserted into the florets directly ahead of it. This species of bumblebee has a black abdomen covered in fine black hairs, a "belt" of fine brown hairs where the abdomen meets the thorax, a thorax covered in fine yellow hairs, a black head covered in black and yellow hairs, two large compound eyes and three, small simple eyes, two short antennae, large mandibles, and six legs with long hairs on the hind legs used to store gathered pollen.
A #Macro shot of some flowers and flower buds of the butterfly milkweed plant, common in the eastern United States, including Florida.
This plant attracts several butterfly species, hence its name.
Butterflies feed on its nectar and lay eggs on it. The eggs hatch into caterpillars that eat some of the leaves, which contain substances that are toxic to potential predators of the caterpillars.
