PS. With all the Discord stuff, in case you wonder why you never see me promoting Matrix, it’s not because it’s a usability nightmare (which it is) but because it’s made by the kind of people who’d be happy to call ICE a customer.
I know there is a lot of hate for #Matrix around here, but I do still consider it the least bad option as a #Discord alternative.
It's far from perfect, but it's enough to keep my community afloat, with the features we need, without the risk of being locked into yet another corporate ecosystem.
We've been running a Matrix/Discord bridge for a long time now, so the chat history and everything is already there, up to a point, and we've been helping people get switched over to it, or at least figure out setting it up as a backup plan.
Things are about to get pretty wild, and it's not going to be the most comfy transition. We're going to lose some functionality, but I think we got the important stuff all accounted for.
watercolour; dark, almost black clouds hang over a sandy foreground; vertical rain falls but evaporates before hitting the surface; at the bottom fire is simmering and rising - a circular curve pulls elements from top to bottom half and up again
watercolour; fractal curves and lines fuse together in a glowing centre point, colours vary from plant green to water blues and lines intersect and deform randomly.
🚨 IF you are an #Signal, #Threema or #Element user und installed today the fresh #IOS26 Update, this is important for you:
please #disable in each App-Setting the fucking #default allowence to "apple intelligance" use the chat content for "learning" & co.
Please protect the #privacy of your communication partners and disable this

Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. :corgi_wtf1: And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.
How do I make #fluffychat display content in notifications?
Unified Push, using the push gateway by my #matrix hoster.
#Element eats my battery faster than pigeons do a fallen bread. #Elementx sets the wrong receiver in the push channel and never gets its own notifications.
(It sets as receiver packagename to the packagename of old Element and will never be waked up by that event.)
Notification by Fluffychat that only says that there is a new message but not by whom and what.
If you run a matrix server, it’s time to upgrade! The matrix team disclosed and patched a vulnerability today. I still haven’t found details about the actual vulnerability yet.
Bonus points that you also have to upgrade all the rooms to version 12 to be fully protected, and version 12 isn’t supported by all clients, and upgrading rooms doesn’t really upgrade the room, it creates a new room and invites the previous members to the new room and turns the former room into a pointer to the new room. And of course mod tools like draupnir have to be re-configured. 💩
There's been a lot of negativity around #Matrix and #Element recently. And I (somewhat) joined in and expressed my frustration with it every now and then. Something I still appreciate around #Matrix is the fact, that they listen to (most of) the criticism and acknowledge (many of) their problems. There's a nice self-critical video addressing all of this recent criticism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyuqM7RbX5E
I've had this error tryna launch the #Element desktop #Flatpak app (#Matrix client) on #Linux ever since one of the #KDE Plasma updates, been a while now and it's still not going away. Are we supposed to wait for something, to have it fixed - or is there something we have to do that can get it fixed? Looks like an #Electron or #kwallet issue. The only workaround for now, is to use their web client.

Too hot to spend a lovely Sunday afternoon outside? Feel free to come watch me at 10:30 UTC / 13:30 EEST!
Today, I'll be working on fixing a few assorted bugs in #Element for #BugsDoneQuick - my personal speedrun challege to solve as many #FOSS issues in a week as I can! ☺️
So, I am one of those old school types who mains with Firefox and Noscript. And also a filthy casual that just goes on lemmy.world. But half the images are broken because I'm expected to allow scripts on like 30+ sites to see most of the posts. I'm literally expected to allow /all/ the scripts from a domain just so I can see ...
You could support this by making vote buttons submit a form if JS isn't enabled. (That's what mlmym does.)
Can't manually switch between dark and light mode
Hmm... There are some pretty nifty things you can do with a hidden checkbox, label, and some clever CSS (e.g. html:has(#element:checked) + CSS variables -- though FYI :has is baseline 2023.)
Making it persistent would require some more effort -- e.g. form + cookies + server side style sheet selection, most likely. mlmym lets users change their theme w/o JS by submiting a form on the setting page. I'd have to think a bit if there's a good way to make it persistent across multiple requests for logged out users with a CDN caching things in between though...
only automatically based on browser settings
Doesn't actually work for me in a FF138-based browser w/ JS blocked via NoScript -- I always get light mode despite having a dark mode preference set. (Where do you have your prefers-color-scheme media query?)
Also, FYI I had to manually override font restriction -- otherwise all your buttons end up as tofu characters. (I think NoScript is being kind of unreasonably strict there by blocking first party fonts.) That's a papercut kind of issue, but figured I'd point it out in case it might save you some debugging time if you get confused NoScript users in the future.
We have found an interesting vulnerability in a #Matrix#Android client:
🧩 Software: #Element X Android
📦 Affected Version: <= 25.04.1
🆔 CVE: CVE-2025-27599
📊 CVSSv3.1: MEDIUM
⚠️ Prerequisites: Clicking on a crafted hyperlink or using a malicious app
Since Element X Android usually has the permission to access camera and microphone, this can be used to record audio and video from the victim. Pretty bad! 😨

Is there a Lemmy server/way that doesn't require allowing javascript of a million other servers?
