Co-founder and lead of #OpenPrinting (since 2001), introduced CUPS printing system in Mandrake Linux in 2000 working at MandrakeSoft, with this and a lot of evangelism (booths, talks, workshops) made the other distros switch to CUPS, 2006-2025 at Canonical, 2025-2026 funded by Sovereign Tech Fund, co-organizing annual meetings with the Printer Working Group (PWG), since 2008 every year mentoring in Google Summer of Code, fellow of the Linux Foundation. Got my first product samples from and... I'm conflicted.

The color is great, the embroidered logo quality seems good, but then I looked on the inside. That "patch" or whatever looks so amateur! And it gives zero confidence in the garment's durability. Could it survive a wash?

It's forgivable w/ the beanie, as that patch thing isn't against your skin & it may not get washed frequently. It's more annoying with the t-shirt. Am I being too harsh? No experience with embroidery...

@jwildeboer you are the expert in machine embroidery. Is this here OK?

@thelinuxexperiment@tilvids.com avatar thelinuxexperiment seeing Arduino having turned a classic proprietary product from one day to the next and creating Linux distros working on any ARM marchine like we have distros working on practically any x86 machine is too much a hassle (proprietary communication protocols of components?) perhaps RISC-V will be the better way to go in the future?

Third round of highlights taken from @BrodieOnLinux 's Tech over Tea episode with me.

This time it is about

Apple CUPS vs. OpenPrinting CUPS

and I also tell about CUPS 3.x, the New Architecture, classic drivers and PPDs get dropped, driverless printing, how it began and how it works, and that driverless printing even can save your legacy printers under Windows ...

Is watching/listening to @BrodieOnLinux 's Tech over Tea for 2 hours not your cup of tea?

Do not run for a coffee now to keep yourself awake for the 2 hours, but just watch the most striking news in it which Brodie has separated for you.

The first of them is about the incident with Canonical and how I am recovering, and fairly well (thanks again, @sovtechfund ) as I am covered until end-2026 now!

Amazing News!

The Sovereign Tech Agency @sovtechfund is investing in OpenPrinting!

My full-time work at OpenPrinting will get funded until the end of 2026, by the Sovereign Tech Fund! Because printing is an essential part of the IT infrastructure. So printing will continue to just work!

See details in my blog:

Urgent help for OpenPrinting needed!

As many here know, I am co-founder and lead of OpenPrinting since 2001, known as the print guru for Linux and free software by many. I also got one of the 8 fellows of the Linux Foundation for this.

Up to now I was working at Canonical, hired back in 2006 just to run OpenPrinting and also to maintain printing-related Ubuntu packages.

... 🧵

Please boost.

🧵 ...

OpenPrinting is an essential piece of the free software system infrastructure and it needs to be kept in its good shape in which it is currently, many people appreciating my work and sometimes even telling that for them printing works better than under Windows or macOS.

Any help is appreciated, including just boosting this thread.

Before Ubuntu, there was a Linux desktop called Mandrake Linux. Simple, stylish, and way ahead of its time. 🔥

@itsfoss I have worked for 6 years (2000-2006) at MandrakeSoft/Mandriva in Paris, and my very first task was switching from LPD (Line Printer Daemon, line printers are kind of high-speed electric typewriters) to and so Mandrake was the first distro with CUPS and easy printing.

So whatever Mandrake version was released in fall of 2000 was the first ever Linux distro on the world which used CUPS.

And that was the foundation of !

Hi, anybody here is experienced in Rust (perhaps even also in creating bindings for a C library/API) and would like to mentor a contributor for OpenPrinting? The contributor will work a total of 3 months full-time (or 350 hours) in the time from May to November this year on the project and they will get a stipend from Google.

Only additional requirements are a minimum age of 18 and not to want to participate as GSoC contributor this year or in any later year.

This was one of the first Linux comics I ever stumbled across, and I think it remains one of my favorites. (Using it in a new article)
