Canada is turning to employee ownership to prevent U.S. take overs.

Now that the interest in a singular focus on optimality is waning in favor of more focus on resilience, richer options start to appear.

Imagine that: a lean purpose employee owned cloud infrastructure.

The Dutch have been quietly getting on with normalising the four day working week, and it seems to not have had the negative impact many critics have claimed, with the Netherlands' economy still one of the most successful in the EU;

as so often, real political economic change can be organic rather than forced, and in the UK while at an early stage of this process, the four day working week is slowly but surely e becoming more widely adopted. Good!

@ChrisMayLA6 It's a real answer to productivity increases not being mirrored in wages?

spdrnl ,
@spdrnl@sigmoid.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Also, cramming a week full is not smart planning wise for a lot of tasks. That is what the 20 pct research time in Google was about.

spdrnl ,
@spdrnl@sigmoid.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 It can also make the employer employee relationship healthier that way. A common sense mentality towards swapping days hugely increases planning efforts. It also signals a lot both ways.

spdrnl ,
@spdrnl@sigmoid.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Indeed. The 5th day is in systems theory called 'slack' and this is required to keep any system under control.

The odds are very high that you familiar with this. I still thought it was important to emphasize, since it is an politically impartial argument.

spdrnl ,
@spdrnl@sigmoid.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Note by coincidence or not, 20% is usually also considered the right amount of slack for a lot of systems.

Zooming out. A lot of systems in the end require change, nothing stays the same. So this slack might turn out to be the difference between 'running down' and 'sustainable maintenance'.

And that pertains likely equally to machines and humans.

It's much easier and cheaper than you think to start your own Mastodon server:

  • You don't need to be a tech nerd and you don't need any hardware. You can use a "managed hosting" service which does all the hosting and techy stuff for you behind the scenes.

  • You don't need to be rich, managed hosting starts from around 5 to 10 euros per month including everything.

I've done a non-technical step-by-step guide to creating your own Mastodon server at:

🌱 https://growyourown.services/making-your-own-mastodon-server-in-10-steps

If people starting hosting from the own dsl, then Mastodon could end up being a civic infrastructure.

Important is how to create a DMZ behind a modem.

Not sure how it works in the U.S. in the E.U. you often get one. And then you can also buy one yourself.

Probably a recommendation combo of router and small server setup could end up creating a civic infrastructure.

The UK is continuing its slow but clear fall in perceptions of corruption across the world.

This has already seen a fall in both ranking & a rise in the absolute level of the perception of the UK as a (partially) corrupt society.

In the ten years from 2015 the UK fell from 7th ranked to 20th (which is to say perception of corruption grew)... and this year has an overall score for corruption of 70/100 (the lower the worse the perception of corruption).
