The Dutch have been quietly getting on with normalising the four day working week, and it seems to not have had the negative impact many critics have claimed, with the Netherlands' economy still one of the most successful in the EU;

as so often, real political economic change can be organic rather than forced, and in the UK while at an early stage of this process, the four day working week is slowly but surely e becoming more widely adopted. Good!

@ChrisMayLA6 Note by coincidence or not, 20% is usually also considered the right amount of slack for a lot of systems.

Zooming out. A lot of systems in the end require change, nothing stays the same. So this slack might turn out to be the difference between 'running down' and 'sustainable maintenance'.

And that pertains likely equally to machines and humans.

If people starting hosting from the own dsl, then Mastodon could end up being a civic infrastructure.

Important is how to create a DMZ behind a modem.

Not sure how it works in the U.S. in the E.U. you often get one. And then you can also buy one yourself.

Probably a recommendation combo of router and small server setup could end up creating a civic infrastructure.

Really, the U.S. platforms are not forward looking. The have hit reverse a long time ago, going full speed towards history.

The UK is continuing its slow but clear fall in perceptions of corruption across the world.

This has already seen a fall in both ranking & a rise in the absolute level of the perception of the UK as a (partially) corrupt society.

In the ten years from 2015 the UK fell from 7th ranked to 20th (which is to say perception of corruption grew)... and this year has an overall score for corruption of 70/100 (the lower the worse the perception of corruption).

OK, a bit of a change in gear today; Pink Floyd's long-form Echoes (over 20 mins) is a really interesting testament to how progressive rock changed the way pop music was configured. This mesmerising, slow-burn piece is dreamy & atmospheric which slowly builds with vocals that are hardly central to the piece & includes a funky mid-section. Very much part of my mid-70's teenage years.

Well, later tonight (after the close of US stock markets) Nvidia will announce its quarterly figures... and that will either be a calming influence on jittery traders looking at the AI bubble & wondering when it might burst (or be subject to a further 'correction') or.... it will confirm the lack of real value flowing from AI investments, and prompt even more to run for the door.

Overnight we'll have a better idea on the current state of the AI 'boom'/bubble...

Mainstream politicians have reduced their emphasis on green issue to focus on cost-of-living reflecting voters' concerns, but this is just one more case of short-termism.

We don't have the luxury to think the environmental crisis will be the next generation's problem, its here & is often a direct cause of the economic concerns being articulated by voters.

Only the Green parties seem to see this & as voters come to this conclusion so the mainstream parties will lose support.

This is what happens when you push universities into a business model that is built on the dependence on foreign students' fees; the university becomes sensitive to lobbying & actions by Govt's from states that 'provide' many of those students.

In this case China has put pressure on Sheffield Hallam U to halt the research of an academic looking at exploitation in Chinese supply chains.

@ChrisMayLA6 As a consultant I see a lot of different businesses from within.

It is the same there. Everyone not executing has been removed. Companies often have no knowledge of how their primary business functions. Big decisions are based on large consultancy templates.

And then there are a lot of 'entrepreneurs' profiting of the government. Delivering thin services without being really accountable, because to hold some accountable you have to have knowledge.
