Article by @lwn on a \LaTeX alternative.

"Typst is a program for document typesetting. It is especially well-suited to technical material incorporating elements such as mathematics, tables, and floating figures. It produces high-quality results, comparable to the gold standard, LaTeX, with a simpler markup system and easier customization, all while compiling documents more quickly."

Amazing. A map showing every page of BYTE magazine.

"This zoomable map shows every page of every issue of BYTE starting from the front cover of the first issue (top left) to the last page of final edition (bottom right)."

New review: Grounded in fact and shorn of sensationalism, this is a great first book on shark biology for non-biologists.

@inqbiol Calling the shark Megalodon instead of Otodus megalodon might get taxonomist grumpy: genus Megalodon is a fossil bivalve molluscs. 🙂

New review: King Tyrant offers a grounded, fact-based overview of the scientific consensus on all things T. rex that is both brilliantly executed and beautifully illustrated.

@inqbiol Nice coincidence: I just started reading it. Enjoying it so far.

I had a laugh at the part where Witton accepts no responsibility for the safety of time travellers who field test his speculations on how good is their eyesight.🙂

"“For me, the takeaway is we know very little—even the very basic of how they find a site,” Parzer says. “Then there’s a lot of species variation. Why are some puddling a lot? Why are some not at all? We have some species where females also puddle—why is that? And then we noticed there’s a big gap. A whole continent is essentially missing—Africa—so there clearly needs to be something done in that area as well.”"

@ewen It can get ever weirder. Here's an article about observations of adult butterflies feeding from caterpillers (kleptopharmacophagy)

"[I]mages show adult milkweed butterflies tearing into the thin skin of nearby caterpillars, then drinking from the wounds."

The ISS is nearly as microbe-free as an isolation ward
The largest study yet of the ISS's microbes hints we’re may be keeping it too clean.

@arstechnica Is there a reason Ars Technica is blocking my connection from Singapore? I keep getting a "403 Forbidden" for any Ars Technica link.

Why Animals Talk has just been released in paperback! This is a highly stimulating and thought-provoking exercise in trying to understand animals on their terms and decentering the human experience.

I just finished reading "What Do Bees Think About?" by Mathieu Lihoreau,
translated by Alison Duncan. A fascinating book and mentions Lars Chittka a lot, making me keen to read his book on bees. Later, I may tackle this one too.
