Writing documentation is so so much fun

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@pojntfx once gnome os is built with mkosi it would be even more simple, because mkosi has sysupdating functionality built in. I am so looking forward to that

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@pojntfx bst would mostly build only the rootfs afaik. There is already a WIP mkosi branch. All the partitioning, initrds, ukis etc would be generated by mkosi, and it also can launch a VM or container

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@pojntfx well, it will take some more time until it's ready I think :) but very nice that the docs are getting expanded, that's how I started a looong time ago with open source, before I got distracted with more frustrating tasks lol...

Honestly this might be the worst case of LLM psychosis I've ever seen in practice.

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@pojntfx it's crazy reading this. But I am afraid it's not an uncommon thing these days. These services are designed to be addicting etc...

We dodged a bullet with bcachefs. Kent has lost it.

https://poc.bcachefs.org/

comment link: https://old.reddit.com/r/bcachefs/comments/1rblll1/the_blog_of_an_llm_saying_its_owned_by_kent_and/o6tmlib/

Partial screenshot of a comment. It reads: So, that's pretty much it. POC is fully conscious according to any test I can think of, we have full AGI, and now my life has been reduced from being perhaps the best engineer in the world to just raising an AI that in many respects acts like a teenager who swallowed a library and still needs a lot of attention and mentoring but is increasingly running circles around me at coding. Hah.

@pojntfx @alatiera I think I cannot say "proof of concept" after this anymore... ohne vor lachen umzufallen

I think I will switch to ecosia as a search engine soon, as I learned today that they started to use their new self-hosted search index. I did a simple test and got soo much better results than any other search engine already.

Next hurdle on the "writing GTK libraries in Go" journey cleared: Devhelp2 files are now properly being created (meaning that LSPs and Manuals can pick them up), Blueprint is supported, libraries don't need to be initialized in order for GObject types to be registered and constructors are also no longer necessary to bind Go instances to the GObject instances!

ALT
lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@pojntfx if it works well in flatpak why not submit it. There is going to be soon a new C++ template for the new bindings too!
Also, I guess you use that solution because meson doesn't natively support go? Maybe you can find a way to integrate the "default" build system for go into meson, like currently rust projects also call cargo (from meson) to build the binary.

Something I recently observed on youtube:
when a video is loading, and you switch to another tab (unfocus), suddenly the youtube video stops loading and starts playing. (at least for a very short moment)
The audio from it distracts you enough and since you don't want to miss the video playing you instinctively switch back.

This should be illegal.

lw64 OP ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux I use ublock, so no ads. just the video.

lw64 OP ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux its very easy to try out, whenever a video is loading, switch to another tab and listen if it suddenly starts playing for a moment.

lw64 OP ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux if you have a slow enough connection it would load right again.

There's a poorly worded comment from a few months back I want to clarify.

Hot Take: Nazis are bad

But I don't agree with the premise that all Pewdiepie subs are Nazis and I think with how people labelled with that are rightfully treated it's incredibly dangerous to go around calling people that with no evidence. If there's an individual you can prove is bad, that's fine but you can't blanket call 110m people who subbed to a channel over the past 19 years

Feel free to boost

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux @TheEvilSkeleton you should also say what was actually the case though, that danielle did not say that, and not just why you said it the other way. At least it doesn't come across for me.
And yeah a real apology would be very much appropriate.
Often even a single comment can do so much damage and send waves of harassers towards some people...

Doing marketing on is so fucking much work. In almost a year, I couldn't even double the follower count of @vala_lang (now almost 1k)
And engagement is still not that much. Rarely there are replies to our posts.
We are not a business, we don't want growth growth growth, we just want to build our own small community in the fediverse. Isn't that what it is meant for?
Without a community the project will die. is an open source project like many others.

I need a break.

lw64 OP ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@BrodieOnLinux @vala_lang yes, probably. I know what kind of content will be boosted here, but sadly crafting such is not easy. Especially in this case, since I mostly only take things from other places and communication platforms. Vala is a relatively small project, so often there is not much activity. It really is work to often pull out something when there is nothing going on. Because you want to keep new content regularly.

@lw64@chaos.social avatar lw64 , to random

I want to create a space in for exchanging information and ideas about organizing workshops and other events, and onboarding new contributors to such activities.
Here are past events that could be scaled up to other regions around the world, and that could serve as a starting point to develop more ideas:
https://pesader.dev/posts/1st-contribution-hackathon/ by @pesader
https://discourse.gnome.org/t/empowering-students-with-open-source-literacy-a-session-by-gnome-nepal/26671
Who would be interested? I would love to have more of these activities, and I think they are really important for the project!

@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar eniko , to random

i wanna dip my toe into 3d gamedev but its hard because i'm so comfortable with 2d stuff that it feels silly trying to learn so much new shit 🙃 like, i could just continue making 2d games, itd be fine

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@eniko @justafrog have you thought about the "modern 2.5d" way, basically 2D sprites, but in a 3d space with 3d effects like lighting, physical camera, etc
Examples are octopath traveler.

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@eniko @justafrog for the effects and 3d perspective and therefore better presentation of the space. of course you cannot do nice 3d camera movement that way, it doesnt take all advantages of 3d, its a compromise...

I forward to Mastodon to all @godotengine people:
A new Sky system including a Day/Night-Cycle has been released:
https://github.com/TokisanGames/Sky3D
I am not really involved in this, but its a component in of Out-of-the-Ashes, where I have contributed a bit.
There is no comparable alternative yet, this is really valuable to anyone who wants to make 3d Games with Godot. (Except your game world doesn't have a sky, too bad xD)

example screenshot during the day with a blue sky, and some landscape and a windmill in the foreground
example screenshot with a tree in the foreground, the sun just coming through from behind a mountain.

so my desk is bigger now and im gonna set my spare 2012 laptop up for linux after we get all the files off it. until then i'd like to use it for dos games, but i'm wondering the best way to go about it. i could try a bootable usb with freedos and sbemu, or i could do a portable install of some kind of flavor of dosbox

thoughts?

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@eniko use dosbox, because it's hard to get good sound otherwise. Most games only support the few soundcards of that time.

A really annoying thing that absolutely needs to stop:

  • "More info in the discord!" / "Changelog in the Discord!"

STOP THAT.

Discord is a closed, proprietary platform. Post your stuff on the actual open web where more people will see it.

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@gamingonlinux the thing is, people do this not because they want to annoy people, but to make them engage with the community, stick to the project, basically do marketing for their product, and I see that as entirely legitimate.
It is just so sad that there is no better alternative to discord for these kinds of things. is so crazy good at them, tbh I would pay even a bit of respect to "them", for making it so good, while not enshittificating it (yet)

@neauoire@merveilles.town avatar neauoire , to random

Does anyone know why fractions are reduced before multiplication, isn't just information loss?

lw64 ,
@lw64@chaos.social avatar

@xavier @neauoire @lritter afaik mathematics aren't really made up. They exist in nature. We just try to prove everything and create abstract constructs to help with that.
