The job of engineers is not to deploy some technology but to build robust, reliable and sustainable (in all meanings of that word) solutions for real world problems based on requirements directly derived from people's needs. Even for an engineer technology comes second at best.

alatiera ,
@alatiera@mastodon.social avatar

@tante Calling any of the turn it off and on again engineering is an insult to engineers.

When I am crossing a bridge, someone had run the math to prove that it won't collapse on its own or from an earthquake.

But with software we don't have a single clue what will happen let alone to how reproduce issues.

alatiera ,

@GerardThornley @tante All software ever written, unless its one of those special "formally verified" academic projects.

alatiera ,
@alatiera@mastodon.social avatar

@GerardThornley @tante To this day they are rebooting f35 subsystems mid-flight when they bug out.

Not all software is trash-tier quality but we are nowhere close to the reliability and determinism you'd expect for any engineering field. And its not getting any better with all the deregulation and outsourcing to contractors.

The reason "AI" has settled on "chat" as interface is because what they are actually selling is domination. They are selling you having a personal slave. That's their hook.

alatiera ,
@alatiera@mastodon.social avatar

@tante It's either the personal slave or the mass psychosis cause the chatbot "gets you"

But maybe don't be completely delusional about working for a yet another big tech company thats destroying the society/planet?

In fact, Germany and IMF forcefully kicked me and my parents out of our home so they could auction it to some hedgefund in the cayman islands.

But at least you bet such hedgefunds have been investing OpenAI and every other tech company with the profits so its probably a net positive for society!

@frameworkcomputer Framework's continued commitment to "deliberately create a big tent" is paying off.

More than a month since the last public statement comment from Framework on the subject and they still haven't distanced themselves from this guy.

The forum thread has over 2000 replies at this point..

Framework's CEO on a public forum thread: > We support open source software (and hardware), and partner with developers and maintainers across the ecosystem. We deliberately create a big tent, because we want open source software to win. We don’t partner based on individuals’ or organizations’ beliefs, values, or political stances outside of their alignment with us on increasing the adoption of open source software. We’ve sent out large quantities of hardware to folks at Fedora, Bluefin, Bazzite, NixOS, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Omarchy, and many other distros, and have sponsored either the organizations directly or events with Linux Foundation, LVFS, NixOS, Debian, KDE, Hyprland, and others. Within the team itself, personal distro and OS preferences span basically every Linux distro you can imagine along with FreeBSD. I personally am running machines with Fedora (for machine learning), Bazzite (for gaming), Omarchy (general productivity), and Windows 11 (when I have to). > I definitely understand that not everyone will agree with taking a big tent approach, but we want to be transparent that bringing in and enabling every organization and community that we can across the Linux ecosystem is a deliberate choice.

@frameworkcomputer It's abundantly clear from Framework's non-communication and silence on the subject that they hope this can be swept under and it will "go away".

@jorge Check it out, more bootc updates!

It’s fully functional, and no image rebuilds are needed.

https://thisweek.gnome.org/posts/2025/11/twig-225/

Excerpt from This week in GNOME 225 Tulip Blossom from Project Bluefin has been working on building bootc images of different Linux systems, including GNOME OS. To ensure bootc users have the best experience possible with our system, Jordan Petridis and Valentin David from the GNOME OS team are working on building an OCI image that can be directly used by bootc. It is currently a work in progress, but we expect to land it soon. This collaboration is a great opportunity to expand our community, contributor base and share our vision for how to build operating systems. Note that this does not represent a change in our plans for GNOME OS itself; It will continue using the same systemd tools for deploying and updating the system.

@thibaultamartin @YaLTeR @jorge @tulilirockz I have so many thoughts about devcontianers, and they are mostly ranting ones.

alatiera OP ,
@alatiera@mastodon.social avatar

@thibaultamartin @YaLTeR @jorge @tulilirockz Make tooling that's a clone of flatpak-builder instead of RUN apt install npm && curl | sh

You don't want to build the build-environment, you want to build, run and test your app more or less. That my main beef with how everyone approaches it.

Additionally, the environment is part of the application. Devcontianers exist cause the images themselves have no clue how and with what permissions and env vars to initialize themselves.

alatiera OP ,
@alatiera@mastodon.social avatar

@thibaultamartin @YaLTeR @jorge @tulilirockz And everything defaults to being root in the container for no reason at all. The cardinal sin.

https://docs.projectbluefin.io/blog/2025-10-28-bluefin-autumn/#helping-flathub

FlatHub is critical to the desktop We choose to help move application development forward via FlatHub instead of fragmenting the ecosystem with distribution-specific packaging. This includes shipping a premier FlatHub experience out of the box. You do not have to worry about misconfigured and low-quality Fedora flatpak remotes and packages on Bluefin systems.

@BrodieOnLinux @mattdm About the verified part, it wasn't out of context cause it came right after saying there are No reviews, as in, none at all was the implication. When you hear it like and the implication is that everyone uploads things with no oversight, it quickly becomes to same quality guarantee as Twitter's blue check mark and useless.

Perhaps I should have phrased it a bit better and expanded into it in the post but I thought it would have been fine since it was back to back.
