Obliged or not when there is an investigation, there are valid reasons to not assist. From protected information to 5th amendment stuff. However, if they defy a court order to hand it over, that would be a crisis.

It needs to be requested by a judge not an officer.

A bunch of my friends were made redundant. Some had visas dependent on their work, employer sponsored and had to leave Australia. Heck, we call it the gfc as an acronym. We just didn’t have a general recession.

hitmyspot ,

Slop flop seems like it would work. He’s flopped the slop. That slop was flopped out without checking.

I have the momentum 4. Sound is good. Touch control is good. They are comfortable and I find lots of other brands are not.
One issue is they often don’t automatically come on when removed. I assume it’s due to build up like earwax over the sensors but I didn’t have a problem with other brands. I would buy them again. My husband says talkin on the mic is poor for phone calls.

My previous earbuds were pixels, for comparison. I was happy with the pixels, but found the pass through and sound isolation clunkier to use. Momentum is simpler. Pass through or noise cancelling.

When did it become normalized to start passing credit card processing fees to the customer?

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I never remembered having to pay a surcharge to use a credit card. Now everywhere I go there are signs saying that there is a 2.5-3.5% surcharge to use a car (and others that say that there’s a 2.5-3.5% discount for using cash, I assume to get around wording)

hitmyspot ,

More likely, it’s to fudge the numbers and pay less tax. Credit cards leave a record of income. Cash doesn’t.

hitmyspot ,

Not if grandma might see it.

My favourite great hunger joke:

How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman?

None.

The 6.19 kernel has been released ( lwn.net )

Summary: Linux 6.19 adds a new listns(2) system call that makes much easier to list the namespaces present on the system; support for the Live Update Orchestrator, which allows to reboot a kernel via kexec while enough kernel state to allow virtual virtual machines continue working after a reboot; support for PCIe Link ...

hitmyspot ,

I'm still a Linux newbie. How long does it usually take before this is on rolling releases? Do they test while it's unreleased and then release soon after or start testing now? Days, weeks, month? Varies by what's changed, I'm sure, but I mean a typical non-milestone kernel release.

Ice agents are now also putting Mexican flag decals and the like on their cars. I hope they end up shooting each other.

hitmyspot ,

Wow, well done to that antique shop owner. That's awesome. Nothing illegal. No big protest. Just hold them to account and don't help them.

hitmyspot ,

People can compartmentalize. He can be completely all over the science and believe it factually as part of medicine while also believing that spouting nonsense that is unscientific is valid if he says so, as he's a doctor. His self interest can override his knowledge, in particular if it feeds his ego, as being a celebrity doctor would.

All doctors and scientists simplify their messaging when dealing with non scientists as a means to help them understand concepts they don't have a grounding in. That simplification is often factually incorrect. It's a slippery slope.

Particularly in this modern world. Our brains in general seek order and certainty, but almost everything is on a spectrum. So when scientist talk in facts and absolutes, it's easy to negate their message with edge cases or precise sticking points that they are ignoring for simplicity. Take vaccines. They have known side effects. They are deemed safe. People can still die. Cars and planes are likewise deemed safe.

hitmyspot ,

While I agree with the sentiment, I think posting a protest about something you disagree with is normal. When it's all you do, that's when it's a problem.

Like I'll jump into a discussion about trans rights and punching down if someone brings up chapelles new shows. However, id be more inclined to not watch than moan about it unprompted.

It's a bit of a quandary, though. If you haven't watched the content, how do you know it's offensive? Trust the media that tells you so? Or friends on social media? Neither seems reliable.

Laptops. Jewelry, particularly gold.

Phones and ipads can usually be locked down. While that is possible for laptops, it's not typical, except for the log in. It's becoming more common, which is good for overall crime.

hitmyspot ,

They've tried, but nobody speaks their language. Unfortunately even Google translate and ai have difficulty with new stuff as they haven't been able to incorporate it into their models as yet.

The big fear, from a technical standpoint is that by the time that is done, they will no longer be teenagers and will be able to speak the common tongue. By then, well all be dead from cycle accidents on social media.

hitmyspot ,

I'd much prefer these bikes are on the main bridge platform rather than on the pedestrian part. The article makes it sound like they should have stayed off the road.

I think requiring licences would be sensible at this point. For bikes AND ebokes that are using the roads. Sydney is becoming more bike friendly with cycle lanes, but there are lots of awful cyclists who whizz through pedestrian only areas and ignore bike signage and lights.

Part of the problem is that it's still car centric. Anywhere there is an intersection, cars are given right of way instead of bikes. That's starting to change with bike turns across traffic being indicated with a box placing them in front of car cross traffic. So, I you are turning left, from a bike lane.on the right, you wait in a box further right. When the lights change, you cross before the cars do. Seems sensible.

Unfortunately, there are lots of parts where a car turning across traffic or bike lanes is prioritized before bikes going straight.

I’m getting a puppy this week. The proposed name is cookie. What to do?

hitmyspot ,

Haha, I don't. But my kids kind of do. I doubt they are being influenced by any trends as they wouldn't be familiar. Luckily cookie is the second choice. First choice was buttcrack, which has been nixed.

hitmyspot ,

SatansMaggotyCumFart, that's a nice thing to say. However, I think we have differing views on nice names to choose.

I just don't think I want to call out "here buttcrack, here girl. That's right, do a poo buttcrack" at the dog park. Maybe it's different with cats as you don't tend to speak to them in the same way due to their underlying contempt.

hitmyspot ,

Haha, cookie is already American English and we're Australian and Irish. Maybe that's enough. Or we should go the other way and call her biscuit or tim tam.

My grandmother had a dog called toffee as a child, so I like that. My parents in law had 2 jack Russel's called rom and Jerry. So a cartoon character is an option too.

hitmyspot ,

I thought boomers were no longer the biggest voting bloc.

hitmyspot ,

Lots of words have unified origins. They diverge to allow 2 different concepts to be named. Calling someone a cleric still means something different to calling them a clerk.

However, a clerical error could be ambiguous. Likely as the term was less common, and so didn't have enough usage to warrant divergence.

hitmyspot ,

Careful now.

hitmyspot ,

Possibly playing the victim? Those dastardly bands with morals don't want to play for real Americans. When likely they just don't want to be associated kid rock and racism. Artists will generally play for anyone if they get paid!

hitmyspot ,

Well, that's what was hoped for with Bidens term. Yet nothing really happened.

People still operate under the assumption of good faith. Its completely ridiculous to be that naive at this point.

There are "no weapons" signs at libraries?

    hitmyspot ,

The last of us had naughty dog on board, and the showrunner had just done the amazing Chernobyl.

Jurassic Park was Spielberg, possibly the greatest blockbuster director of all time.

Jk Rowling was heavily involved with the Harry Potter movies including casting.

Not all adaptiations are bad, but when it's a cash in movie or series, it's often those without involvement of the original writer that struggle.

Being involved doesn't have to be the main writer. For instance game of thrones had george rr martin involved but had different writers. It's when they didn't have source material that it went off the rails.

    hitmyspot ,

It's rare for any adaptation to be better than the source material. Usually the best you'd hope for is as good, or nearly as good but more accessible.

    hitmyspot ,

Or they could write a book about their struggle.

    hitmyspot ,

It's also to say they have principles. It's hard for the USA or Europe to criticize their human rights abuses while continuing to support Israel. It's a way to highlight western hypocrisy while avoiding risk. Remember they still invest into other high risk countries. High risk can lead to high reward.

    hitmyspot ,

Yes, and we should continue to do so. However, lets not pretend that immoral actions by America and Europe don't undermined their position.

    hitmyspot ,

You don't even need to subsidies electric. You just need to tax all carbon and pollution at the actual cost to society.

The only reason petrol is preferred elsewhere is due to the lack of infrastructure. You can get petrol/gas everywhere. Charging your car is less reliable and needs effort to find. While it's not really a problem for most people's driving habits day to day, it's a perceived problem.

As energy prices continue to rise and solar continues to drop, it will become more and more economical to have electric car and solar charging.

    hitmyspot ,

Yes, that's what subsidies the oil and gas but it's the external expenses to society that are the biggest subsidy. That's what carbon taxes or carbon trading schemes are designed to address. This, the true cost makes oil and gas uneconomical compared to green energy.

It's like Walmart underpaying their workers, so they are entitled to food aid. The tru cost of living is not reflected in their wages. We all end up subsidizing the company instead of them paying their fair share.

    hitmyspot ,

Surely the increase in visitor spending could fund some public toilets, which is clearly lacking for that volume of people.

    hitmyspot ,

Lowest value in USD. As the dollar is slumped, it's worth even less for most of the rest of the world.

    hitmyspot ,

It does if you inflate the price of the base tier, then add a new lower tier at the old price. With ads.

Or if you have less content and charge more.

Or if you stop making content with creatives having control and instead make it based on producer led content.

Or if you start changing up the cover art of different content and sprinkle it in different categories to give the appearance of more content.

Or if you claim to be about freedom of speech and not judging content based on being offensive or controversial, but then fire workers that you feel are offensive or controversial.

Or if you start buying your competition with the intention of having less competition.

    hitmyspot ,

    Everyone in the sixth sense.

    Mia farrow on rosemarys baby.

Al pacino in devil's advocate if that counts as horror.

    hitmyspot ,

Oh and sigourney weaver in alien.

To be fair, he also gave a great performance for his age,.or just in general.

Every forced update is 5 minutes of hassle for each login. If you work from multiple PCs, it’s a nightmare.

    hitmyspot ,

It’s a bit unfortunate that this update designed to reassure has typos.

I prefer tuna to salmon, but that's a non sequitor.

I think any company that is sunsetting a product with existing customers still using it should offer full refunds or a way to operate it without the company.

Cloud services have no incentive to continue operating unless they charge 'rent' as servers and maintenance is not free. However, if they choose to use proprietary ways to protect their IP, they should also have an obligation. If they choose to not have that obligation, they lose the IP and open source it.

    hitmyspot ,

Haven't china traditionally kept the yuan weak to help exports? Is this a bigger shift than just wanting the soft power from being a reserve currency? They have talked about a transition to consumption based economy. This could be a further step in that direction. It could mean a decrease on cheap Chinese goods, though.

    hitmyspot ,

That's the point, really. People can be terrible or great, no matter their background, or identity.

    hitmyspot ,

That his support is in the 20s on some metrics is telling that he's losing his base. He used to have a 30-35% unbreakable following no matter what he did. This is good news. It's harder for him to break laws with less support.

The emperor has no clothes and more people are starting to see. I think the plan to try to forment an uprising to quash has failed and instead they look weak and petty with less support.

    hitmyspot ,

Well, it is a kids show, for kids, with no history of knowing glances to the parents. I find it weird with action shows like transformers but this has always been twee at least, if not cutesy.
