How do you explain to someone who doesn't know much about social media what Mastodon or the fediverse is?

Mum mainly scrolls through Facebook, X & Instagram & occasionally posts/shares things on Facebook.

I'm not very good at explaining things, so I thought someone on here might do a better job.

Yeah the email comparison doesn't really work anymore bc most ppl use gmail nowaday.
I guess something like "it's like X but instead of having one X owner and operated by one guy there were a lot of small X operated by a company, a nonprofit, your city, your friend's son, etc. And if you're on one X you can still see and share all the posts from the other Xs too. And you can also see and share all the posts from small Facebooks and Instagrams because they connect together too."

    There's a zillion things in the world to be mad about but today one of them for me is that they made Outlook worse. Outlook! They changed the attachment reminder so it now activates on the 'do not open attachments' warning your org puts on incoming external emails, so now it pops on EVERY. EMAIL.

    Recently I helped a client configure his email account on the new outlook, which requires some manual configuration. And that's where I've seen something horrible: outlook has translated "STARTTLS" to "démarrerTLS". :neocat_0_0_256:

    Honestly just learning what black trans men (and trans men of colour in general)go through on a daily basis makes me go :BlobCat_NotLikeThis:
    Literally all the trans men of colour I've spoken to have seen an increase of violence (especially police/institutional violence) against them.
