You know what's "performative" ? The most performative thing in the world?

Talking about what's performative is SO performative.

And here's the spicy take: performative isn't bad.

doing good things performativly is far far better than not doing anything and better than participating in harm.

    Yeah, I knew some lovely people who worked at Twitter too. And did you know they once had unfettered API access and anyone could create their own client? Some of us loved that so much we built things that helped legitimise them as an open platform. And then one day they just switched that off.

    Legitimacy is gold to venture-capital-funded startups. They need people with it to convince everyday folks that this latest iteration of the same old rug pull is different. Until they’ve grown so much that they don’t need it anymore, that is. I guess we haven’t learned that much after all.

    You want to understand Bluesky? Imagine if Google had invented email and scaled Gmail before allowing others to set up their own email servers, knowing that maybe a handful would and that they were large enough to make the rules ad infinitum. That’s Bluesky.

    Don’t fall for the latest venture-capital funded Silicon Valley social network no matter who tells you it’s fine and no matter how many words they use to do so. Especially when we’ve had a noncommercial and noncorporate alternative for close to a decade now in the form of the fediverse.

    I know it’s a low bar but can we please at least get it through our thick heads that venture capital funded Silicon Valley Big Tech does not deserve the benefit of the doubt.

    If you admire the efficiency of a top down autocracy, go live in one. See how your speech is bent to the purposes of the party.

    If you admire small government and a lack of rules and super low taxes, go live in a failed state. Live among the warlords, be one or die trying.

    Fucking get out of here. Functioning capitalism requires many rules otherwise it is a cancer that destroys society. Democracies are the best way to create the fair rules, unless they are owned by the rich.

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @Urban_Hermit Your view is not one I see championed by many people from the US in such clear terms as yours. It's either "anti-capitalism" or it's "corporations are people". I rarely see anything in-between. Why, do you think, that is? Is your view a rarity, or is it that nobody bothers saying it out loud?

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @Urban_Hermit Makes a kind of sick sense. The monopolists, the insider-traders, the people with money in Panama,
    Cyprus and those kinds of places are in fact not interested in a functioning free market. The biggest threat to Capitalism is the "Capitalists". Our vocabulary to talk about these things is not ideal. I am for capitalism, as in the economic system. I am not for Elon Musk awarding himself government contracts. By common usage I'm pro capitlism and anti-capitalist. NG.

    @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph Not my understanding of those words. The definition I've grown up with says (private property + any kind of monetary system + no personal/inherited privileges ) = capitalism (i.e. the economic system). Exempt parts of society (health, education), and you've got a mixed economy. A free-market economy requires (according to my usage) further regulation to avoid monopolies and market manipulation. @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph
    1/(hopefully just a few)
    We're going off on a tangent here, one I do not enjoy, so I'll try to be brief and refer any further enquiries to John Stewart Mill and L.T. Hobhouse . They're much smarter than me anyway.
    The definition of Capitalism I'll stick to is that you have a right to private property, including means of production. I view capitalism as any kind of system built on that. To my mind "capitalism" is not an entity capable of "wanting" anything.
    @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph
    2/?
    This capitalism that I refer to arose in opposition to feudalism, licenses granted to lords and guilds to have the sole right to establish markets and make things based on specific technologies.
    Left to its own devices such a capitalistic system will fail in several ways. Monopolies will arise, so a "free market" needs to be protected by strict regulations.
    Capitalism, even when a free market is upheld, will fail to provide certain services.
    @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph
    3/
    Such services are indisputably Law-enforcement, defence and infrastructure. I would also add a lot more, such as education, health-care, social services.
    Given that, you can never have a purely capitalistic society. Some goods and services must be provided through common action i.e. public services. You will then have a mixed economy. Some capitalism, some publicly provided goods and services.

    Now, what about those who claim capitalism wants things?
    @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph 4/ My position is that those who claim capitalism wants things are seriously twisted. Only people want things. Imbuing a set of rules, be they property-rights or whatever, with wants leads to seriously twisted outcomes. Letting private entities own factories and service organisations (like Google/Alphabet) can be an efficient way to organise in order to create value for people. @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph

    5/ Google does not have a god-given right to exist, certainly not as a monopolist. They are a good example of how unregulated capitalism is incompatible with free markets. Apple with their app store is another. I believe computer programs in general is an area that would be well served by a free market economy. That is, neither a socialised app-store nor a private monopolist ("capitalist") app-store is optimal for creating value for people.
    /End. I hope.

    @demofox
    @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph Your words:
    "The point of capitalism is amassing wealth"
    "Capitalism is about acquiring ownership of ALL the means of production of ANYTHING, which as I said means eventually one entity will own & control everything."
    Those are mindsets of some owners. Not inherent in a law that says private entities are allowed to do business. What it is about is up to the legislative bodies of your country. A mixed economy with proper rules and oversight is possible.
    @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @jwcph Can't leave well enough alone, can I ? It is my belief that by adopting the oligarchy's definition of
    "capitalism" and "free market", you are making life much easier for them, the likes of Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych, Jared Kushner, Osama bin Salman, Elon Musk and hundreds more. NOW I'm finished. For now. :-D <ducks and rolls away> @demofox @Urban_Hermit

    hakona ,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @demofox The trouble is words. Different lines of scholarship define the words differently. I'd maybe go with political science/comparative politics for the widest range of view-points. My personal schooling is way to shallow, mostly just from hanging out with people who have acronyms attached to their names. Some of the best, but knowledge by osmosis only goes so far :-D @jwcph @Urban_Hermit

Argan nuts have a very tough outer layer, so the way to get this mainstay of your beauty routine, is to follow the goats who eat the whole argan-nuts. When they shit, there will be ready-peeled nuts in the dung. These are then picked out and processed for oil. Hopefully sans the goat-dung.

    ICYMI, the POTUS just issued a memorandum instructing the DOJ and DHS to go after lawyers who challenge the administration.

    "President Trump broadened his campaign of retaliation against lawyers he dislikes with a new memorandum that threatens to use government power to punish any law firms that, in his view, unfairly challenge his administration."

    "The memorandum directs the heads of the Justice and Homeland Security Departments to “seek sanctions against attorneys and law firms who engage in frivolous, unreasonable and vexatious litigation against the United States” or in matters that come before federal agencies."

    "Mr. Trump issued the order late Friday night, after a tumultuous week for the American legal community in which one of the country’s premier firms, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, struck a deal with the White House to spare the company from a punitive decree issued by Mr. Trump the previous week."

    "Vanita Gupta, who as a civil rights lawyer and a former Justice Department official has both sued the government and defended it in court, said Mr. Trump’s memo “attacks the very foundations of our legal system by threatening and intimidating litigants who aim to hold our government accountable to the law and the Constitution.”
