Semla and they are delicious

Are Vorons still the best DIY printers in 2026?

I'm looking into getting a new printer, and I'm interested in building my own. I know Voron 2.4 and Trident are the obvious ones to look at. But I can't help but notice they are both 3+ year old printers. Considering how much the industry has grown in the last few years, it got second guessing if Voron is still the way to go. ...

fhein ,

If you enjoy building the Voron that's definitely a better deal (and I think I would) but if you're doing it to save money you have to factor in that time in the cost as well. I was briefly considering buying a Core One L after they become available with INDX, because it would be nice with a printer which includes everything and just works. But the VFA problems discouraged me, Prusa's suggestions to overtension belts and modified slicer profiles which try to avoid certain speeds feels like a bandaid solution to what is fundamentally a hardware design flaw IMO.

fhein ,

Are we talking 3x acceleration and you're adding 3x position? I've heard the terms a lot but haven't really thought about which DoFs they're referring to.. Can't these devices also measure absolute rotation, so wouldn't that make them 9DoF?

fhein ,

I was basically wondering if position and acceleration were considered different degrees of freedom, but I had it a bit mixed up. I've seen cheap 6 DoF boards with accelerometers plus something else to measure rotation IIRC, but these don't have absolute position and I was thinking if you add that maybe it would increase the degrees of freedom

fhein ,

Very important. I spend a lot of time at my computer and my desktop environment is like my home. I want it to look in a way that I find aesthetically pleasing and it mustn't try to force me to change the way I work because some UX designer decided that their way was much better than everybody else's. Perhaps you can guess where this is going :D but I've tried to like Gnome 3 since it was first announced. I've given it multiple chances but it just doesn't work for me. It feels like they're going down the same road as all "modern" UIs, where only the most basic features are visible and everything else is either dumped into the "advanced" category or removed entirely. On the other hand, I have a coworker who only uses his PC like a tool, and he thinks Gnome is the best DE ever and can't understand why anyone would want something else.

Currently I use KDE and I'm pretty happy with it. It's highly configurable, and I've made it look and feel the way I want. I used mainly Xfce for a long time but now I prefer KDE.

fhein ,

Can't remember if it was Gnome 3 or Ubuntu Unity, but I think at least one of them had the intention of creating a unified UI for all types of devices.

fhein ,

It's funny if you know that it is parody, but it's so widespead in this day and ago so I tend to unconsciously filter it out. Tbh I probably wouldn't have clicked the link if I hadn't seen your comment, since I thought this was the original title of the video

For a printer to be compliant, it mustn't be possible to bypass the restrictions. So your printer might not even be legal if it allows you to flash custom firmware.

identify and reject print requests for firearms or illegal firearm parts with a high degree of reliability and cannot be overridden or otherwise defeated by a user with significant technical skill.

fhein ,

I think you missed the part where it said "[...] cannot be overridden or otherwise defeated by a user with significant technical skill." I.e. either the printer will only allow flashing with signed firmware containing the detection algorithms, or it would have to be done by a separate chip which isn't affected by flashing firmwares.

But also detecting firearms in gcode is a ridiculously complex task, and if companies actually try to comply they might opt for building the algorithms into their closed source slicer instead, and then only allowing their printer to print encrypted/signed gcode. Or they might do the analysis using some AI algorithm on their cloud servers, requiring an always on internet connection to print things. It might be tempting to think that nobody would buy a printer like that, but I think that enough people will do if they make it convenient and cheap enough.

fhein ,

I think a new Linux user shouldn't have to choose a DE, so starting with a distro which makes this choice for them is most likely better. Unless the CachyOS installer does a good job at explaining what a desktop environment is, there's a risk that a new user thinks they're just selecting a skin for the OS and don't understand how it will affect their desktop experience. If they for example choose an extreme light weight DE for their brand new gaming PC, their first impression of Linux might be that it looks dated.

Having a DE chooser built into more distro installers could be a good thing for us more experienced users though.

De brukar börja med rubriker i stil med "What is an X", "Why you should buy an X", "Things to look out for when buying X", men alla tips är väldigt generiska och uppenbara. The best budget X", "The best X for travel", osv.

fhein OP ,

Nice! Letade genast upp Pandemic: On the Brink och beställde.

fhein ,

It's also only the 50mm closest to X-axis 0 (left edge of bed I guess) that have significantly higher values, the rest of the bed is fairly even. Depending on what models OP has printed, they might not even be using this part of the print area.

fhein ,

Looks better, but IMO it looks like it's still calibrated too close to the bed. In some places it looks like the material has been smushed into the surface, and in others it looks like ridges have formed between the lines where the nozzle has pushed excess material around. https://cdn.help.prusa3d.com/wp-content/uploads/First-Layer-Calibration-04.jpg

fhein ,

I think it's more of an art form than an exact science to get perfect calibration using the paper method. It gives a decent starting point for further manual adjustment though. Personally I prefer to put a lamp behind the printer, and then babystep the nozzle down until I can no longer see any gap between it and the bed, but that also usually requires a few minor adjustments afterwards.

fhein ,

First of all, this is /c/Sweden and not /c/Denmark :) But yes, Swedes have been consuming large quantities of US news and media for a long time, our industry has grown incredibly dependent on USA, and our own media repeats US war propaganda as if it were objective news. Also our politicians - especially the capitalist/conservative parties who have been leading the country the last 20 years - suck up to Trump and happily repeats anything that comes out of his mouth without question.

fhein ,

Started as the former and moving gradually towards the latter, but I don't think the term "conservative" is equally meaningful outside of USA. The largest right wing party, The Moderates, are first and foremost economic liberal. While their political support parties have varied, I believe they are currently governing together with The Christ Democrats (formed by evangelicals and not related to the German CDU) and The Sweden Democrats (formed by members of neo-nazi and far right groups), so currently they're ofc. making life harder for immigrats, etc. But they were equally happy to govern together with more socially liberal right wing parties. If one were to describe the politics in Sweden I would rather use the term neoliberal. While it also includes some conservatism now, it comes further down the list.

fhein ,

Sorry, I'm not that much into politics :) I just linked the wikipedia article in case someone read the comment without having heard the term. Even among decently educated and intelligent people, I've noticed that there often is a tendency to guess what words mean based on what they look like. One of the most extreme examples of that was someone thinking that conservatives also were pro environmental conservatism, entirely based on the similarity of the words...

On the larger scale, we've had massive privatizations everywhere. Pharmacies were sold (very cheap), hospitals and elderly care facilities are now owned and run by international investment firms, and we have for-profit schools. But everything is still paid for with tax money, so instead of trying to provide as good services as possible, all the private interests try to pocket as much as the money instead. Proponents of this system often say that the government run healthcare was inefficient, but having "too many" doctors and nurses at least created jobs here in Sweden.

They've also made union memberships more expensive, resulting in many leaving them. So we have large international corporations violating Swedish laws that should protect the workers' rights, and instead of upholding them government politicians side with the companies.

Instead they've instituted government handouts for home renovations and having servants. There's also a generic "job tax deduction" which gives you back a portion of your income tax. The right wing parties claimed it was going to "make it more profitable to work", i.e. implying compared to being unemployed, but ofc. it also hurt students and retirees just as much. All the stores gradually increased their prices afterwards, so it doesn't feel like I have much more money at the end of the month, and some economists called it "a solution to a problem which doesn't exist."

But also the party named The Social Democrats started going towards neoliberalism in the late '90s, trying to appease corporations and starting to run public services as for-profit companies.

fhein ,

If it wasn't open, they would be violating the licences of the FOSS projects it's forked from. Their firmwares inherit GPLv3 from Marlin, and CrealityPrint inherits AGPLv3 from slic3r (via Orca Slicer, Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer).

fhein ,

I think the linked article drags it down. Even if you look past its AI slop vibes, it sounds like its target audience is computer illiterate people who don't know what VR is, it doesn't contain any useful information. And since you're on Lemmy, there's probably a fair number of people who dislike everything related to Facebook/Meta, and the article kind of reads like an ad for Metaverse. You could create a post without linking an URL if you want discussion about VR dating in general.

fhein ,

If you set the UI to "simple" most of them are hidden, but it's the best slicer for people who want a lot of options IMO :) I think it does a good job at categorizing and organizing all the different options, so it's relatively easy to find whatever you're looking for.

Self hosted Kanban board with good mobile support

I'm looking for a self hosted Kanban board where we as a exteded family can track things which have to be done. Since my parents are getting older and me and my siblings live all in different countries there is more and more to do to help our parents. But it's difficult to keep track who is doing what and what status things are ...

fhein ,

If you don't find any hostable service, perhaps you could try Obsidian if its Kanban plugin works well in the mobile client. It's closed source, but all data is stored in markdown files, and you could use a self-hosted git server for storage and synchronization between users.

fhein ,

Never used MS Planner, but the Kanban plugin does everything I need and I use it for my larger hobby programming projects. I was already using obsidian.md for other things so for me it was very convenient.

https://github.com/resemble-ai/chatterbox is pretty good, and has both TTS and voice cloning. Main disadvantage for me was that even if the cloning gives a consistent voice, the generated samples can get random accents.

https://huggingface.co/zai-org/GLM-TTS also seemed pretty promising, but I haven't had time to test it yet.

These aliases for zsh I use all the time. It's part of the prezto configuration framework.

setopt AUTO_CD # Auto changes to a directory without typing cd.
setopt AUTO_PUSHD # Push the old directory onto the stack on cd.
setopt PUSHD_IGNORE_DUPS # Do not store duplicates in the stack.
setopt PUSHD_SILENT # Do not print the directory stack after pushd or popd.
setopt PUSHD_TO_HOME # Push to home directory when no argument is given.

alias d='dirs -v'
for index ({1..9}) alias "$index"="cd +${index}"; unset index

Type d and enter to list all the directories you've recently been in, then type the number at the start of the line followed by enter to immediately cd there.

Not sure if latest bash can do it the same thing, but some years ago I wrote a script to implement it there too. IIRC it might've been the automatic removal of duplicates in dir history that was missing.

Current workplace: Windows computers with all development being done in Linux VMs. Management and a few younger devs are pushing for WSL, while several older devs are demanding Linux-only laptops.

Previous workplaces: One more with Windows + Linux VMs. One with Windows + X remote desktop to development servers. One with Linux PCs.

I have been exclusively applying for jobs that promised Linux development though.

... I was thinking about buying a 96GB DDR5 kit from the local computer store a few weeks ago, but wasn't sure it was actually worth €700. Checked again now and the exact same product costs €1500. I guess that settles it, 32GB will have to be enough for the next couple of years then.

fhein ,

I just wanted to test if it was viable to run larger MoE LLMs on CPU, e.g. Qwen3-next-80B-A3B.. Even if I got acceptable generation speeds I'd probably get bored with it after a few hours, as with other local models. Had I got it for €700 it was pretty low value for money anyway, since my current RAM is enough for everything else I use the computer for. On the positive side, I can put that money towards a Steam Frame instead.

fhein ,

IIRC their web site used to make it sound like it was a paid product but it was always possible to get it for free. Can't remember the exact details, perhaps something similar to those "name your price" softwares that have a pre-filled recommended value but it's also possible to choose €0? I checked what it looks like nowadays and the Pro version does come up first if you go to downloads, and then there's a free Core version below it.

'Deadpool VR' Review – Hilarious, High-Energy, Sometimes Repetitive: But Always Deadpool ( www.roadtovr.com )

Marvel’s Deadpool VR serves up a boat load of quippy banter and on-brand humor from everyone’s favorite ‘merc with a mouth’, truly bringing the soul and wit of the character to virtual reality. While combat can feel repetitive at times, and the narrative a little on the thin side, excellent gameplay variety combined with ...

Can Valve save VR gaming with the Steam Frame? ( www.pcworld.com )

The Apple Vision Pro is an expensive flop. I haven’t heard anyone mention the Meta Quest in months, despite it getting a new model just last year. I can’t even remember the name of Samsung’s incoming Android-based headset. While virtual reality gamers remain passionate, the excitement around the format seems to be slowly ...

fhein ,

It's sad that the majority either won't or can't pay full price for products, and go for those that are discounted due to vendor lock and/or built-in ads.

If the Steam Frame ends up costing only $1k I think that's a relatively good price, feels like everything else has doubled in the time since the original Vive was released. Obviously I hope for lower but I kind of expected it to cost at least $1.5k

fhein ,

I don't disagree with that part of the observation :) I also think it's going to be too expensive for the average gamer :( The HTC Vive cost $800 and was released close to the GTX 1080 which cost $600. If high end VR headsets follow a similar price development as high end GPUs, it would cost just above $1.3k based on the RTX 5080's release price of $1k. Anything less that this and it has become relatively cheaper, even though it would still be too expensive for most people. On the other hand, I was surprised by how little the Steam Deck cost, I thought it was also going to cost more than it did.

fhein ,

It excels at flight sims, driving games. If there were really good mech games for it then it would be good at that.

I can imagine it's awesome for those kind of games, but I get too much motion sickness. And getting a motion sim rig would make it even more expensive, even if I had the space for one.

fhein ,

If I may ask, how old are you roughly? I've noticed my sense of balance is changing with age, probably for the worse like everything else :D But I'm not sure if that's good or bad for not getting VR sickess..
