What is the ideal length of a video on a topic you enjoy? So not music, or ambient stuff.

I know that there are some people who I will click on a one hour or three hour video for... but if it's just based on "interesting topic" and a peek at how long it is what do you look for?

davep ,
@davep@infosec.exchange avatar

@futurebird It depends. Mainly 20-30 minutes, but I do love my weekly Perun defence economics PowerPoint presentations that generally last over an hour.

Was just browsing the Internet in a VM with script-blockers turned off for a bit, and half the sites were like "IT PUTS THE DATA IN THE BASKET OR IT GETS THE HOSE AGAIN!" with multiple videos, dozens of ads and and 99 pieces of third-party Javascript loading in the background. The amount of advertiser profiling and data sharing that goes on when you visit these noisy sites with a mobile device is even higher and more invasive, which might explain why I do most of my web browsing inside a VM (but with script blockers turned on).

I've had a few people ask why I didn't post the full Matrix email on my Fedi thread. There are two reasons:

  1. It wouldn't fit in 1k characters.
  2. Listen carefully:

Y'know how "just getting caught cheating on your monogamous partner" isn't the right time to discuss exploring ethical nonmonogamy?

In a similar vein, asking for information while dismissing a report as "no practical security impact" is still dismissing the goddamn report.

I excerpted the part of their email where they dismissed my report. That was the part that initiated the immediate disclosure. The inciting turn of phrase.

It doesn't matter how much you piss on my leg, I'm not going to believe it's raining.

@soatok I'm not sure it's the difference between carelessness and a craftsman, it's understanding the primacy of getting the cryptography right. Epstein didn't kill himself. He was murdered. There's just too much evidence to believe otherwise at this point. The only real question is who murdered him and how was it covered up... and well, Trump had motive, as President he is one of the few people who had means, and as far as I can tell he brought in Bill Barr, who has allegations against him IN THE FILES, to make all this crooked straight.

As far as I'm concerned the murder is basically fact. And, Trump would be my prime suspect.

I've spoken before about how, whilst I have been officially diagnosed as 'neurodivergent up the wazoo' (a professional neurodivergent - top of my game - like MVP but MNP), my wife makes me look like I'm not even trying. And todays adventure is - organise all of our worldly belongings, including everything we've had in storage for the past 5 years. She was out last night and got in at 1am, was up at 5:30 to do a bunch of marking, then did a 3 hour drive to taxi family, and has now decided to do this madness before then Christmasing the house then possibly going out again later. Being near her today is a bit like being low-grade electrocuted. She's taken the human condition as close to actual super-powers as science will allow. If she had any more energy she would simply levitate or shoot lasers from her eyes. Possibly phase in and out between dimensions. I'm not totally convinced she can't and am worried if she tried hard enough she might bring about the End Times. My friends say I'm very active. But next to my wife I'm a slug. Stuck in time. Frozen. Zero degrees Kelvin. Barely any atomic movement. So in a move that I'm not totally proud of, I've come upstairs to hide from her. Existing in the same space as her today is like being caught in a riptide. I need some metaphorical rope and emotional armbands. Neurological flippers - a mental snorkel.

Edit - I have surfaced to finish Game of Thrones with 18, and there are 20-30 bags by the front door earmarked for tip or charity shop and she's now apparently deep cleaning the house 😭🫠

Well it sure does sound like Eugen exited for a measly €1M and Mastodon is left with the co-founder of Twitter in a leadership position. I mean, is it too much to ask for for the alternatives to not be run by the same people who built the things they purport to be an alternative to? I guess we should count ourselves lucky it’s not Elon Musk. 🤷‍♂️ https://mastodon.social/@glynmoody/115570511186347510

I'm not sure bringing up Musk is useful. This person was a co-founder, and apparently had nothing to do with the subsequent Nazification of the site. They might even have some useful domain insight.

Fun fact! Today in 1881, a feud between the Earp brothers (Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan) and an outlaw gang led by Ike Clanton escalated into a gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone. I have two brothers and we're unable to remember each others birthdays, let alone get together to have a shootout with a rival gang. So good for the Earp brothers for being so organised. On this farm, there's a cow, a chicken, and a horse, and the three of them are best friends.

They do just about everything together. And one day, they're sitting at the window of the house, and the farmer's kid is watching MTV, and they're watching it, and they hear the music, and the horse says "you know what? I'm gonna learn how to do that."

So the horse calls up Guitar Center, and he says to the guy on the phone, "Hey, listen. I wanna learn to play guitar."

Guy on the phone says "no problem. Come on down."

"No, there might be one problem. I'm a horse."

"Naw, it ain't a problem. We'll get some attachments, I can teach you to play. Promise."

So horse turns out to be a natural. He gets GOOD. And he calls over Cow and Chicken and he's like "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO" and he jams out like Jimi Hendrix. And Cow says "holy shit. That's awesome. I want to learn to do something like that too. What's like that?" And horse says "Bass. Learn to play bass."

So Cow calls up Guitar Center, and she says "Hey, listen, I wanna learn to play bass guitar."

Guy on the phone says "No problem, miss, come on down."

"Eh, this might be a problem. I'm a cow."

"Nah, no problem. I helped a horse recently, I can teach you to play too. Promise."

So Cow learns to play the bass, and Cow is amazing. So Cow and Horse are jamming, and Chicken gets a bit jealous. He says "Damn, I wanna learn something too. But not like that."

Horse says "Well, I mean, we need a drummer around here."

So Chicken calls up Guitar Center, and he says "Hey, listen, I wanna learn to play drums."

Guy on the phone says "No problem, man. Come on down."

    "Eh, maybe a problem. I'm a chicken."

"No problem. I taught a horse guitar and a cow bass. I can teach you drums."

So chicken learns the drums, and he's amazing. So Cow, Horse, and Chicken all start having jam sessions whenever the farmer's out. And one day they're playing, and a big record agent is driving down the road. And he hears them, and he's like "what the fuck? that sounds amazing." so he stops at the farm, and he finds them all playing in the barn. And he says "You guys sound AWESOME. I wanna represent you, make this a real band, make some music. You're gonna be HUGE."

So Cow and Chicken and Horse take this guy's deal, and they move to the city, they cut albums, and they're big. REAL big. Top 10 hits, platinum albums, the works.

They get set for their first tour. But there's a problem, see. Horse gets a phone call, his mom's real sick. Cow and Chicken, though, they're cool as hell. They say "Listen. Go see your mom. We'll delay the first show a couple of days, so fly back home, spend some time with her, and then jump on a plane and come meet us."

Horse says "Thanks, guys. you're the best," and he takes off.

Couple of days later, Horse's mom is just fine. Turned out to be a real bad cold, she gets over it, and he spends another night there. The following morning, he gets a call. It's his agent. Cow and Chicken's plane went down, they died in the crash. The band is done. he's lost his best friends. And horse, this breaks him, man. He's been through so much with them, and he feels real down in the dumps. So he takes a walk, and while he's on that walk, he just can't shake the blues, so he figures to himself "Alright, alright. One drink, just to get over it."

So Horse walks into the local bar. Bartender looks at him and says "Hey. Why the long face?"
