I am playing No Man's Sky GOG version which I installed via Heroic on Linux using Proton-GE, linking it up to SteamVR which in turns connects to ALVR wirelessly to my Quest 2 which... works.

It's also a bit dystopian that we have to tip-toe around YouTube's definition of "accepted content", but that's what we get for relying on a centralized corporatized platform I guess 🙃

The price of these handheld gaming devices is just too damn high. The Steam Deck knew where to put it's price, and I doubt more expensive than that will sell any better. Happy about SteamOS support tho!

@gbryant@subscribeto.me avatar gbryant I might be in the minority here, but 720p with great compression is honestly good enough for me. What matters the most is that your video is able to convey what it needs to - perhaps only uploading in 1080p when you believe it necessary?

I'll look into being able to give some cash 😃 Man, do I wish we had a good solution for micro-payments online... I would gladly donate micro-payments to creators.

@fedivideo@fedi.video avatar fedivideo Honestly YouTube has spoiled us. Content can be streamed in 4k simply because they are as big as they are, and can "afford" the bandwidth + datacosts.

720p is more than good enough for most content. That's the format I save my own gaming clips in, because what matters is the atmosphere of the moments I capture, not necessarily a 1:1 crisp image of the experience.

With good encoding, anything is possible :tonguemsn:

@gamingonlinux If they're going to make a "Definitive Edition" of DoW, they should make sure to allow all the features to be accessed DRM-free! DoW Anniversary Edition did not allow you to use the LAN-feature, because it was deliberately removed... 😑

GOG needs to step up their game and make sure the DRM-free crowd does not get treated as a lower class customer.

Surprising to see Youtuber PewDiePie (110M subscribers) publishing a video last night , "I installed Linux (so should you)" with a call to his community to join the platform, underlining the fun of customisation and DIY, in opposition to all the enshitification of Windows. His main point of friction for moving was Photoshop, and he explained how he made the effort to adapt GIMP to his needs. Always good to see initiatives like that shared to large audience.

To be clear: I’m not saying the GIMP name is awesome and should be kept at all costs. It can change.

What I’m saying is: focus on the cool stuff first, praise the devs for their cool work. Don’t turn all the cool stuff into a battle. We can talk about the name AND also think the devs delivered some great stuff.

Firefox is adding excellent features. Sure, the Mozilla stuff sucks, but the browser is great. We can give praise AND also raise issues, not everything needs to be back or white.

    @pixelfed I can't help but agree with the many others that have commented here. Pixelfed must be brought to superb quality and maintained for a loooong time for it to remain an IG-alternative. Do not spread your resources too thin.

    recently wrote that TPM 2.0 is a "a non-negotiable standard for the future of Windows." This pretty much confirms it won't back down on its hardware requirements for Windows 11, an OS that is seriously struggling to gain new users (~35% of Windows users) after 3 years.

    When October 2025 rolls around and support for Windows 10 ends, this will force tens of millions of people to unnecessarily buy new hardware.

    @killyourfm I told my mom and my little brother that they should at least give Linux a go before they consider buying new hardware.

    My brother could possibly use the upgrade anyways, but my mom only uses the PC for browsing the web and occasionally edits a document or two using LibreOffice. Both of those activities are great under Linux, so yeah 😄
